Dear GAF, buy Sonic Generations. ...no seriously.

I played the demo on PS3 and the 30fps was tough on the eyes for classic Sonic, it didn't feel smooth at all.

Wonder if there's a PC demo I could try for 60fps.

A Steam demo exists, it just hasn't been released yet for some reason.

My 2 cents :

I don't want to play the EXACT Game as before .
why would i want the exact Green hill zone from the genesis area ?Can't i just play the original GHZ instead ? And that's why i don't understand some people complaining here ..Do you want to play the exact same levels , over and over again ? i sure don't . i want differences ..Something new even when they reuse the themes.
The levels are all completely new... The challenges also completely change the levels.

But i don't like sonic.. i didn't like sonic as a kid when i got my genesis and i don't like sonic today.

I guess since you went through all this trouble to reach out i can at least download the demo to see if it sparks interest but i highly doubt it will.

I'm tempted to buy it, but...something is holding me back. I guess it's the fact that I bought Sonic Colors and only played it for like 2 hours and haven't gone back to it since. It wasn't bad...just didn't hold my attention.

I'll buy it on PC when it hits 5 bucks on Steam.

I couldn't care less about Sonic, but I do like Sega and it seems like a competent Sonic Game, for once (Sonic Colors is good too).

MAYBE 7,50.

Thanks for the thread and impressions GAF.

This morning I am 7 years old again. :)

It is really good people. Unless there is some amount of awfulness that seeps out past the first 4 stages, this game is the Sonic game I've been needing since Adventure (no wii). For people wary of Modern Sonic (which you should be), don't be. It's Sonic Unleashed side scrolling modern Sonic with just a dash of the more scripted bits of Sonic Adventure. No slow trodding bad platforming found in Sonic 2k6. It's the "good" Modern Sonic (somewhat of an oxymoron, but it exists, demonstrated here).

Maybe the suck will show up after the 4th stage and I'm prematurely praising the game. I'll update my impressions if they change.

I can't get the remix of Super Sonic Racing out of my head. Treating it like it's a good thing.

Wait... you mean there's a remix of Sonic R music in this game? /goes out to buy two copies

Would you have been ok if they just copy pasted the same thing ( level ) and be done with it ?

Honestly, yes. But only if it didn't have fucked physics.

And your Mario Kart comparison is laughable. Because MK tweaks the gameplay, but it's still good. Sonic hasn't been in a good game since Sonic 3 and Knuckles. Every other game since has had to fuck with the gameplay and formula OVER AND OVER AND OVER AND OVER and it makes the games/series WORSE because of it.

The first demo was terrible, but some friends (one a die-hard sonic guy) convinced me to try the second demo. The classic gameplay was much better but I still found I didn't like the visuals. Modern sonic visuals were better for me, but as soon as I found out that it had touches of Sonic Adventure (3D sonic), I almost hit the power button. I force my way through it and the 2D parts were good... but I can't bring myself to buy it knowing that I'd have to suffer through the 3D gameplay. :\

I'll consider it for $5 on steam, solely because maybe I can use a downloaded save so I can skip all the 3D parts.

I wanted to like this game, but honestly Sega just doesn't know shit about how to make a good game anymore. The classic gameplay is just hold right to win, and the physics aren't exactly the same as the genesis games, which makes it downright unplayable. The modern levels? Yuck. It's like Sonic Adventure all over again. If I press any direction Sonic just goes shooting off the edge of the stage. And all I have to do is boost and use the lock-on attack. Who finds this stuff fun? Plus, I counted each frame per second and let me tell you, the results were less than favorable. I turned off the game as soon as I found out there were levels and bosses from the rest of Sonic's 20 years of existence. Why doesn't Sega listen to the fans?!!

Just kidding, this game is amazingly fun and you should buy it or at least rent it.

It was so nice, I bought it twice.

PC and 360 FTW!!!

PC was 29.99 and 360 is what like 35?
50.

I'm an oldschool sonic fan who is hard to please but not impossible to please. Sonic Generations is easily the best thing to come out of the franchise since sonic and knuckles came out in the early to mid 90's.

I liked colors, but man is SG better.

I was completely turned off after playing the first demo, but promises of improved physics post-E3 and praise for the (cheap) Steam version pulled me back again. If only they released the Steam demo, that would have surely sealed the deal.

If I end up buying this game, it'll be the first sonic game I purchase after the original Adventure. I'm glad I never supported any of SEGA's shoddy efforts.

Aside from Planet Wisp, I think the other two levels weren't good choices.
I disagree, Crisis City was passable and Rooftop Run was great, but in their attempt to make Planet Wisp the stereotypical "final level" they ruined it. Plus they messed up the Wisp powerups big time. None of them hold a candle to the greatness of Sky Sanctuary or Seaside Hill though.

The last third is actually the worst part. Not awful, but definitely doesn't keep up the pace.
it's because they only had sonic unleashed and colors to plagiarize from

(but I thought classic crisis city was quite good)

Rooftop Run is good.

Or maybe I was just too entranced by the music.

I agree, but I thought it was better in Unleashed.

The only level that I didn't like was Planet Wisp. It wasn't bad level design per se; it just dragged on for too long. They could have split it into two acts each for Modern and Classic Sonic.

Didn't really like the demo. Saw a video of chemical plant zone just now and WOW, it looks awesome!
Will buy when it gets cheap.

I bought the PC version, played it and then played the 360 version I rented. Wow 60 FPS makes a HUGE difference in this game!

Sega have already stated they aren't planning on making any "classic" Sonic games any time soon and that Generations was a blip on the radar.

It's like after Sonic and Knuckles back in the Mega Drive days Sega just made one stupid decision after the other with Sonic.

What point is there in going out and showing support for "classic" Sonic is Sega went out of its way to tell consumers beforehand it didn't care?

I want more "Classic" Sonic and have done since I was a child. Sega hasn't seen fit to give me a full and proper "classic" experience since then. Generations give me half a "classic" game. Sonic 4 Episode 1 was insultingly bad.

So yeah. Rent Generations.

The 3D segments are great, the 2D segments are great. The game has one bad level, not even a bad level a bad act. Even that one act is still kinda alright. Been playing this game non stop since I got it. So much fun, if you're a fan of 3D/2D platformers you definitely should get this game.

The last third is actually the worst part. Not awful, but definitely doesn't keep up the pace.

Crisis City act 2 is the best level in the game.

It was like Sonic Team just couldn't resist.
"guys we have done really well up to now, it's time to make a much worse space lizard boss with a really bad attempt to remake the sonic 3k space battle, who is with me!?"

I think I just had urban fatigue by that point, Sonic in human surroundings has always irked me in any case.

Just went ahead and ordered it - thanks to my Amazon Rewards Card, it was free.

Although, sadly, it's like $1 more expensive than it was last night... Chase's Rewards server was undergoing maintenance.

I got the PC version. I believe Sega released this version because they loved seeing it running at 60fps and it was the only way to share it with the world.

I'm on a (lol) Athlon64 X2 3.1GHz and a HD 4850 and it didn't run at 60fps for me at first which made me ultra sad, but setting shadows and reflections to "low" fixed it with near zero impact on the visuals: 60fps at 1440x900.

However, I get big framedrops in Chemical Plant and in sections where there's lots of physics-based destruction. Fortunately, this has only happened in auto-pilot modern Sonic sections, but serves as a reminder that one needs a modern Intel CPU to enjoy this game stress free.

You also cannot disable effects like shadows, blur effects, HDR or normal mapping, so I believe people with laptops and video cards which stray too below from GF8800-level of performance should wait for a demo to be released or go straight for consoles. I see no point in buying the PC version if you cannot run it at 60fps.

The Act 2 levels are kinda shit from the few that I've played so far in the early going here.

Really enjoying the Act 1 stuff. Also, the story is Sonic stuff....so...yeah.
