Deep Silver is pulling Metro Exodus from Steam, makes it Epic store exclusive.

Welp, seems that "conversation overheard in bar in Munich" leak was correct.

Glorious, fractured PC future.
I thought I wouldn't get much use out of this. Seems I was wrong

There will be a couple of years of bigger exclusives and giveaways while Epic tries to get a good foothold. After that they will probably be more cautious after burning through so much cash. By that time ideally having a feature rich client that can compete with Steam on those terms.

Speaking as someone with only the Steam client installed and most of my PC games are from GOG atm, all this doesn't really bother me. Fun times ahead.

I'm happy I don't buy most games brand new. I can take a wait and see approach. I'm hoping all these exclusives are timed exclusives. Or I hope Steam lower their profit percentage.

Honestly, I do not believe that Steam will reduce its percentage ... They will continue to make a maximum of money with cs go, dota 2 ... They offer thousands of games every year, I'm sure they make a lot of money on smaller games ... however I really hope they will react because I really like what Steam is ...

Steam should really lower their damn percentage. Not only might they keep the remaining publishers, but also make it a lot more harder for Epic to steal their games.

Well I won't be buying this. I saw this for months in my steam feed, added it to my wishlist and had the intention to try it in the first month. Not anymore. They milked steam for adverts then bailed. 4A Games can suck my ass.

I heard some talk that this was the Publisher Deep Silvers decision, not the Devs themselves.

Closed platforms are in the position to do so unlike PC.

No, it's just that development teams forget that before they gave their 30% Cut to Steam, they had to do printing, logistics and PR all by themselves. Now it's just Steam if you're a indie dev but those new teams that have no clue how horrible it was think it's unfair. It's like starting to complain about taxes that got introduced to combat income deficiencies in certain sectors but young people that have no clue think it's just money grabbing useless tax.
So Valve is going to incentivize devs/publishers to keep big games on their platform and not go anywhere else.?

Yes, it's called Steam population. Many devs cry about 30% cut yet Steam makes usually 75% of their revenue, so Steam literally doesn't have to do anything.
Xi Jinping will get rid of Valve in favor of Tencent, he already started maneuvering by enforcing the approval of any online game by the government. Most of Steam market grow of these last years came from China.

And how exactly will this work against Steam? The games have to be approved for either store, Steam and Epic. And if this approval will be a hassle, I even see Steam benefit from that as Publishers that would have to go through this lengthy process would want to do it for the store with more market coverage, which again is Steam.

Steam should really lower their damn percentage. Not only might they keep the remaining publishers, but also make it a lot more harder for Epic to steal their games.
How is this considered stealing if it is going to end up on Steam anyway? If anything this just proves that even Epic doesn't have deep enough pockets to buy a games complete exclusivity. And so far, it's only Ubisoft who will exclusively publish on Epic store but that's because both firms are owned by Tencent. Japanese Dev's surely won't move over to Epic Store and keep on releasing games on Steam, as you can see with RE2Make and upcoming games like Sekiro, Jump Force etc.

@Topic: You can see the pressure they got if they announce it's just a 1 Year deal not even 5 hours later. This will even fuel the RTX debate even further as the few RTX titles that even exist get stretched over every store in existence which makes it even less of a noteworthy feature in the current gen. I look forward to the sales number for the PC Version of this game and how it will fall way short of projections. Epic's "income insurance", if I may call it so, sounds good on paper, but if you consider that nowadays a lot of post-launch revenue comes from either DLC, Lootboxes or other microtransactions, then this policy is still a loss. What do I care if Epic pays me like 10M player bought the game when in reality its just 1M? Even though I get release revenue as planned, I fall short on post-launch earning because there simply aint a big enough playerbase to buy the post-launch features.

Well the problem is they're losing major U.S publishers for AAA titles and indie titles are selling better on the switch. Pretty much all they have left is Capcom and a few other Japanese publishers.

I don't think he literally means "steal", just a figure of speech. Basically like "stealing" market share, if you know what I mean.

Hrmmm, wouldn't be surprised if Dying Light 2 ends up exclusive now as well..............

This is actually kind of a big deal though because Metro Exodus is a fucking demanding game with insane system requirements, like people are going to have issues with this game more than likely. So they're going to release the game on a client without any support forums!!???!??!??
wtf..

4A games doesn't even have their own forums. So release what's primarily a PC series on PC and then rely on valve's own steam forums where you pulled your product from.

Yeah I got that but I don't see how it steals market share if it ends up on Steam anyway just a bit later. Many of the more loyal Steam fans will simply wait for the Steam release.
Like me, I planned on getting Satisfactory Day-1 but after they said they are on a 1 Year Epic Store exclusive deal I just shrugged it off and me and friends will buy it 1y later on Steam release.
Ofc I get that that's not what the majority will do, but it will be a noticeable numbers so Steam will get it's share either way.

did someone posted that modern warfare 2 picture yet ?

i remember how much i hated steam when i got halflife 2 day 1 and all i had was dial up.
i had to wait 2 days to get the check on a game i bought from steam.
Now i have 300 games on steam.
Steam is not my friend i will fuck it over the first chance i get if it supports devs and my wallet some more.

You know what's sad?

Valve allows devs to generate unlimited Steam keys and sell them off-platform. I.e valve gets $0, devs get 100% of the revenue if they sell keys directly. This is why various sites are already offering metro keys for $20 cheaper than the epic store. Many people don't know just how flexible and off-handed valve is and how devs can already gets a larger revenue share via steam than epic can provide.

What Epic is doing is scummery. Vote with your wallet.

Where are the people up in arms about steam not bending and being more friendly with their cut on dev/publisher profits?

Those are from shady ass sites like cdkeys and G2A though. Humble Bundle and GMG didn't have any steam keys for Exodus yet.

The twitter announcement for this is a sight to behold. Out of what are almost 1000 comments (combined over two posts) you'll be hard pressed to find 10 that aren't hammering Deep Silver/4A for this decision.
Almost every single one of the negative comments are all about skipping the game now or just pirating it.

I can't help but wonder what sort of economic incentive Epic is even offering to make developers and publishers think that it's worth the negative attention and the presumably just as negative impact on sales.
I mean, I get that an money-hatting helps devs to sleep better at night having to risk less upfront, but for big budget games that are also heavily anticipated as Metro Exodus was, you'd have to assume they had to pay a metric fuckton of money.

Both already listed Metro Exodus available for preorder. Both don't have it anymore.

That is a really good point, i could go to sites like GMG and just get keys, and there are various bundle sites as well as sites to giveaway Steam Keys or trade them.

Hell, Steam has Steam Gift Cards, cards you can buy on a store and avoid anything to do with Paypal or Credit cards to buy games, which i imagine is something many people appreciate or serve as some gifts to PC gamers considering how they have been around for years, even Blizzard has been doing those for years as well which can serve to pay for games or store some money until a sale, and Epic Store...nothing, there is not even an Epic Wallet as far as i know and there are less payment options as far as i can tell.

But Epic Store can still improve and add to it, besides, like some people said, competition can be a good thing if it leads to the stores improving...but it still sucks they pulled this off, i mean, it was so close to the release of the game on Steam and only now do they reveal this!?

Thank God it's not a game i cared about, honestly care far more about Hades if we are talking about Epic Store exclusives.

Well it would be one thing if the game was half a year from release not less than 3 weeks.

However this was supposed to be a big hit for 4A games, 2033 and Last Light sold well on steam but who knows how much of that was at a deep discounted price. They've never really lit up the console charts and the series arguably has it's biggest following on PC.

The last thing they needed was drama and this is 4A games biggest release that they've been working on for years.

The last thing I want to deal with in pc gaming is having a storefront like Steam get pushed out. Steam is a gatekeeper that we need. I see this as a race to the bottom to save money for the big publishers at the detriment of the consumer (the shit show that has been the Bethesda Launcher for example). We've already been seeing it lately before the Epic Store launched but I fear this will fuel it even more.

Valve probably (obviously) was resting on their laurels and probably didn't negotiate with the big publishers on the cut percentage and are feeling it.
So....you're in favor of a monopoly.

Fuck that.
Fuck that.

What am I looking at and what does this prove?
It's a small example of why it's crazy that people are arguing that they support Epic as a way to break up a monopoly and yet all Epic seems to be interested in doing is setting up their own. Steam doesn't stop devs from selling their game elsewhere and even offer the ability to generate steam keys and sell offsite without steam taking a cut. Epic on the other hand is doing it's best to remove any kind of choice consumers have despite having the platform with the least features.

I mean, it's worrying that you can't tell by yourself.
You are looking at all the diversity that "competition" introduced to fight the "monopoly".

On the left you have a game published on the "monopolistic" Steam, which incidentally enabled plenty of competing services to offer the same title at different price points.
On the right you have Epic Store, "finally the competition that will save consumers from the monopoly", being the only possible option for anyone interested to buy the game it offers.

Lol at peoples being mad at getting cheaper games.

It's not about being cheaper, it's about having a platform that will allow for some communication for tech support for one of the most demanding PC titles this year.

Also Epic Store is notorious for getting user data breached and they don't provide for different solutions of payment. There's no "epic store fortnire card" or eshop card you can buy in a store.

But they're objectively not. First off, the discount is US-only. Second off, you could probably find cheaper discounts on GMG or other retailers before Deep Silver took it off steam.
For fuck's sake. Look at the image posted right before your post.
If you don't understand how the platform works, that's completely fine. Just don't come with these asinine comments.

I seriously doubt Steam doesn't get some sort of cut from keys being sold elsewhere.

Plus, I never said I was in favor of an Epic monopoly either, but I had a bad experience 6 years ago, where my entire Steam library got locked out due to a misunderstanding on their end. It took me over a week of going back and forth with tech support before they acknowledged the misunderstanding.

After that, I can assure you I never want one single middle man controlling everything. GOG is my platform of choice by far and it isn't even close.

.
It doesn't really matter that you "doubt it" since it's a well known fact and it has been for years.
You can doubt gravity but you are still going to fall on your face when you stumble.

For what ? Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo take 30% too... This is a industrial problem... Epic are just here to take all the money they can... They dont care about players and community like valve/steam does... they are just profiteers ...
Sony and ms also spend tons of money on r&d of hardware and advertising of thier platform to help justify that money. If valve wants that same 30% then time to step up release hardware and spend millions on advertising and co-advertising. All valve now is spend little money on bandwidth and customer service then rake in the money on the backs of everybody else. Valve brought this on themselves they should cut thier fee in half if they are offering half of what ms, Sony, apple ect are doing with hardware and advertising.

Yeah let's just forget about VR R&D done with HTC for the VIVE, SteamOS and Proton. Because I'm sure they are barely noteworthy and practically invented themselves.

Not to mention it's a weird argument in the first place. Sony and MS spend money on R&D of hardware because they plan to profit from them, not to do a favor to developers, which if anything create value for their platforms.
That's not even what the 30% is for. The reseller cut is for, well, selling your game for you, giving it access to your large user base and providing the publisher/developer with auxiliary services in the process.
Also, let's not forget that on consoles that 30% is also paired with an additional cut (traditionally around 10-15%) of literally ROYALTIES for the privilege of releasing software for their machines. A 10-15% that they take out of every copy, even the ones that they didn't sell directly.
Hell, even the retail ones.

I don't understand it. There are too many games released these days, especially if you're a multi system owner. Why offer up any resistance to buying your product? Make that shit easy.

By extension of this, Deep Silver could choose to give all Epic Store purchasers Steam activation keys... but won't.

Still very minor compared to a console or what apple does for a phone release. I still don't see valve out there advising games or platform like apple, ms or sony. They basically are relying on ms,sony and the publishers to do all the heavy lifting and they collect all the money on the PC side. I say it has been a 1 sided relationship for a very long time and this was a long time coming. Valve can still make huge money at a 15% cut for basically doing nothing.

Just because you don't think they are doing any heavy lifting doesn't mean you're right. They have to pay for the infrastructure to even be able to deliver those games across the world with reasonable download speeds, they offer you a forum for free, as well as a workshop to create and share mods etc. You saying "Still very minor" just proves how little knowledge you have about the costs it takes to run such infrastructure on top of R&D for VR, SteamOS and Proton.

30% Cut is still valid and will be well into the future. And you also seem to have forgotten that the cut gets lower the more units you sell so Triple A Dev's already end up at 20%.

Edit: To even add on that, according to your logic, Epic shouldn't be allowed to take ANY cut since if you'd say Valve should go with 15% and they are miles ahead in features and services than Epic, where does that place the Epic Store?
1%? 2%?

So competition is....... good?
Sure but we don't know if the epic store will be any real competition for valve. My guess is epic burns through cash and fails. Read this and any pc thread no steam no buy from many people. It's an up hill battle at best an impossible war most likely.

Nope. Cdkeys buys directly from devs. It's not a user key trading hub like g2a. Which part of 'valve allows devs to generate unlimited steam keys and sell them elsewhere' did you not comprehend?
