Destiny is played in 3 person groups in every mode, including competitive multiplayer

According to joystiq, every mode in the game is played in groups of 3. Even multiplayer. wow

As Parsons explained to me, players are free to tackle the campaign alone or with two friends. Every mode is played with groups of threes, incidentally – even adversarial multiplayer – as Bungie feels it offers the best balance for the three available classes. Each mission contains both private and public spaces, meaning some areas are dedicated solely to your three-man team, while other areas will be filled with additional players.

Update:

There are several modes featuring more players that we've already talked about. Raids are a six player activity that will always be in parties comprised of your friends. Competitive multiplayer is not capped at 3v3.

Well that'll be interesting to see how that works.

One potentially interesting twist on the usual loot grind: Each weapon and piece of equipment has its own individually tracked experience. In other words, your gear levels up as you use it. So, even if you find a powerful new machine gun, it might not be an improvement over your level 10 magnum – at least not yet.
This detail is new to me. Bungie had said they want you to feel attached to your weapons, and this is a way to sink those hooks in. So you don't just have some customized weapon from a great raid, it's one you've had for a while and built into something more powerful. As described, I like the sound of that a great deal. I already tend to get attached to unique weapons in RPG's.
WTF?????

If this is true and there's no 4v4, 6v6, or 8v8 in MP, I'm done with Destiny. Fuck this shit

EDIT: Someone make a thread about this. This is outrages

Pretty sure that means you have a squad of 3 - your fire team - rather than a limit on team sizes. Teams can have multiple fire teams.

Huh, that's strange. Can you post the specific quote.

The final piece of the puzzle, one that Bungie has yet to fully reveal, is the overall social experience and how that ties into Destiny's campaign. As Parsons explained to me, players are free to tackle the campaign alone or with two friends. Kinda vague. Hopefully it means you have a squad of 3 on a team with multiple squads.

well this would suck. Hell, it was tough in Borderlands limiting our co-op sessions to only 4 people, as there's usually 5-6 guys I usually game with.

3 is just crazy.

Is this going to be another TitanFall where people complain about the player count even though the developer feels that certain amount is perfectly balanced?

It is kinda low though. Hopefully it just means you have multiple teams of three as suggested by Bessy.

Gonna wait for more info, before I declare how disappointed I am. But this automatically means no really large scale battles. It will be more tactical with several teams of 3 running around the map.

I guess it goes really well with the lore of Destiny (and it randomly reminds me of Last Airbender, when Pro-bending was all about finding harmony with your team). Still, pretty ballsy choice.

What's the point of a "shared world experience" if I can only do it with 2 of my friends? We were planning to get PS4s to play this together!

There seems to be some mixed messaging out there. I'd take this info with a big grain of salt. Wait for further clarification from Bungie.

Bungie has previously confirmed a max player count of six for the main co-op portion of the game. So what I'm wondering now is whether this is referring to your squad/party/fire team size, instead of the overall player cap, or if they lowered the player cap. And IIRC they have never mentioned a player count for the PvP portion of the game.

I think they had mentioned fire teams before, so I'm inclined to think this is the former, but some clarification would be good.

This is my line of thinking. Ever since they announced the fire team of three, I was reminded of Halo: Reach's invasion gametype. That's also the gametype where armor abilities felt most "at home."

Yep, seems like we're maybe jumping the gun on this one. Nothing official from Bungie on competitive MP yet, including player counts.

psh me and my group are 4.....so it sucks that we have to a 3/1 or a 2/2 combo just to play with each other when we are all on.....i have always loved 4 members to a group and its almost always been that way, now with the division and destiny coming out it looks like 3 people plus a tablet companion is the new 4

I'm assuming they'll have traditional game modes along with multi team stuff ala Halo hoppers. Having 2 fire teams per team would put you at 6v6 which sounds fine and that could scale up if the gameplay can support 24 people using powers at once.

I think we'll see a lot if fireteam 1 vs 3 other separate fireteams as the main PVP modes though.

Not psyched about this at all, although I have to imagine that you can still play single player with two AI buddies in Campaign just like Reach.

Still though, the continued death of FFA modes in shooters is a national tragedy.

Hang the fuck on... let's not go crazy here...

There is no way that en entire PVP match will be 3vs3, and that's it...

I didn't even think this game would have PVP anyways. It felt more like a pure PVE MMO Shooter.

Maybe there's a bunch of NPC action even in PvP? But yea I don't see Destiny dethroning CoD, Battlefield or Titanfall in the long run when it comes to multiplayer FPS but time will tell. Especially with the Star Wars Battelfield game that will be released. EDIT: Destiny should be a great coop experience though

The only numbers I saw that they had mentioned before were fireteams of 3, which would story mode, then public events would be up to 7 players.

Other than the rather low player count, that doesn't sound too dissimilar from modern MMOs. You have one big plane, with mini instances scattered throughout and a set amount of people can join that (public or private). The only thing I hope is that you'll always be able to see other groups of players are you explore the open landscape, but the wording makes it seem like you'll only come across them at these "public spaces".

I hope there are other ways to obtain beta keys other than to preorder the game. Then again we could just cancel the preorder

if the competitive mutiplayer is teams of 3 vs each other i have 0 interest in this game anymore. i dont know what the hell bungie are trying to pull here, also why the hell have the muted everyone by default, it kills socialisation.

Probably.

It's certainly a new wrinkle. Squad Slayer for everyone!

Incoming premature rage.

This sounds fun. As long as my team of 3 can become part of a larger team for raids and stuff I'm all in.

I think that all this means is that a fire team can have 3 people in it. However, many of the activities allow for multiple fire teams competing with or against each other.

The most amazing multiplayer experience I've ever had was when I was playing BF3, the server changed to a Metro conquest map. Well, apparently very few people liked that idea, so everyone except for around 6 or 7 of us left. What resulted was basically a 3 on 3 where we were sneaking around the tickets stiles trying to basically just hunt one another, in spite of the conquest mode. We didn't give two shits for the flags.
It was amazing.

But how many of those three-player-groups is going to compete against each other?

4 Small fireteams against each other should be interesting. Not that I wouldn't miss a traditional 8v8 but would definitely try a mode where fireteams compete against each other.
