New Destiny Gameplay

3. Enemies die with little resistance and hit reactions aren't nearly as pronounced as the Halo series.

Serious question, when are enemies ever difficult to take down in these reveals where the player never dies in these demonstrations?

That's like watching a 5min clip of Borderlands, and assuming that no enemy in that game will be a challenge.

I'll wait for PVP if that's supposed to be its saving grace.
I'm pretty confident in saying that PvP won't be Destiny's strong suit. Hopefully it'll be good, but I think the PvE will be better no matter what.

Its a weird thing to say since the game is an MMO(?) but I wonder if that footage would have been more interesting if it was a solo guy fighting some tough enemies. Instead it just looks like 4 dudes mowing down helpless AI in autopilot mode.

Its a shame its so MP focused. I think it probably would have worked better as a SP campaign. But then again, I am heavily biased towards SP games.

1) Dude. It's NOT an MMO.
2) It's online only, but it's singleplayer/coop. It's NOT Titanfall. (for good and bad)

The game is basically a better looking, more serious version of Borderlands.

That is exactly what I want, so I'm happy.

Although, where the hell is a mini-map?
I seriously can't stand games without one. I don't even drive my car in real life without my mini-map (GPS) on.

Just that three second gif with the large open area and the enemy dropship is more exciting than anything from the 7 minute gameplay video.

Okay thats true...but for a game that keeps saying its an mmo; large portions have less players than even last gen shooters like borderlands

The 3 person limit appears to only be in the Strikes, which have been described and demonstrated to be like Dungeons in RPG's (smaller groups, linear, set piece encounters). Max party size in other places was either 5 or 6 as told in one of Bungies podcasts. Raids will require multiple Fireteams (parties).

Kotaku: I Played 45 Minutes Of Destiny, And It Was Kind Of Boring

This reivew bothers me. Not because it's negative.. but because the entire tone throughout the whole thing is negative. It comes across as if the author is tired of games in general and has a special dislike of shooters. Maybe it's just me though.

According to joystiq, every mode in the game is played in groups of 3. Even multiplayer. wow

If that sticks, that is an immense disappointment.

Is this going to be another TitanFall where people complain about the player count even though the developer feels that certain amount is perfectly balanced?

You're probably right in it being a design choice for balance issues or whatever. I just remember them initially advertising groups of 6 for a good portion of the game.

Funny thing is despite that he still gets knocked out during the gameplay showcase lol.

Best gameplay footage by far, I was really not feeling this game but i'm much more interested now. I really disliked borderlands so I hope this isn't TOO similar. I feel like it was mostly the setting and art style though that turned me off.

That looked fantastic.

Seriously, amazing trailer. I don't understand the borderlands comparison, if it wasn't for the loot reveal that comparison would have never came up. Reminds me of the best moments of halo 1 (coop, open map, satisfying ragdoll physics, magnum)

Every mode is played with groups of threes, incidentally – even adversarial multiplayer – as Bungie feels it offers the best balance for the three available classes. Each mission contains both private and public spaces, meaning some areas are dedicated solely to your three-man team, while other areas will be filled with additional players.

Well that'll be interesting to see how that works.

I think they have a marketing problem with this game. People still don't have a clear picture what its suppose to be. Not only is it evident in this thread but also in some of the previews I've read and watched. I know Bungie likes to be coy about their games but it was a mistake this time.

They didn't even show the character creation (have no idea what the faces look like in this game) or a quick segment when you are "in town" with the 3rd person view.

I'm all for keeping the mystery and all but replaying and hyping the same type of footage over and over kinda gets boring and it's showing with the reactions here today.

Well shit, I bet they weren't expecting this much negativity. I'm at a point in my life where I look at games like this and I just go, okay, cool, its a shooter. Epic story could save it for me.

Well, after Bungie spent the last two weeks building up excitement for today and teasing that "floodgates" were going to be opening, all we really got were gameplay videos of another co-op level in Russia. We know nothing new about the game's front end, group events, raids, competitive multiplayer, or the beta.

This game is a little more than 4 months from launch and we know almost nothing about it that we didn't know after E3 2013. Not sure I've ever known so little about a major AAA title this close to release...

Right.

I guess Developers could learn from this thread and put out 50 min videos showcasing everything with AI set to Death. Then just maybe people will be happy at first then depressed knowing they just saw the whole game.

An MMO type game where the groups are only three people?

Yep. Only 3 people. And that map that you saw...that is the only map in the game. And the guns you saw are all that you get too. This 7 minute video showed Destiny in its entirety! Time to pack it up and go home, people!

I'm surprised some of you aren't complaining about how short the whole campaign is....

Looks straight out of Halo Reach/4.
Jetpack + rockets on a dropship.

That looks fine to me. Honestly there is not much more that can be done to combat now except for perhaps increase its scale which is why I was so bummed by the indoor shots that they keep demoing.

What I'd like to see in gameplay innovation is giving more control of the context of the battles to players. Right now we are seeing the fusion of FPS with RPGs which I think is great. What I now want is the fusion of FPS with RTSs. I want the player's battles to mean something to the larger gameplay. I'd like to see an ever evolving world that changes in realistic ways based on the player's actions.

They said that the gear you acquire in PVE will be usable in PVP as well. In any game that does this, there's huge balance problems. Gear usually becomes the deciding factor in who wins a PVP match.

Halo and Destiny are similar in some respects, yes, but they're trying to do different things.

True

I really hope i am wrong about this game. Bungie got me into console gaming; previously i mainly played pc and i don't want to write them off.

I feel like everything should be a bit more heavy in terms of reactions and impact. The enemies react as if they are lightweights. No, they don't float but still.

I dunno, I thought it looked okay. I think Bungie's standard quick-cut trailer is a constant disservice to the games they make, where the pauses between action are just as important as the combat moments themselves. To see them cut out the bits of traversal between firefights I think contributes to the sort of homogenous feel people are getting. Additionally, switching between character perspectives mid-firefight makes everything seem much more chaotic than any Bungie shooter typically is. I also wonder how difficulty is tuned - it just seemed really easy, which very much could be for demo purposes. Anyone who has played Halo knows how the difficulty impacts the experience, so I'm curious how that's handled in a shared world like this. The actual combat looks like a lot of fun - I'm not thrilled with the lifebar feedback method, but I also think the hit reactions were pretty excellent, so it might be a complaint that goes away over time.
Where did you hear "up to 6 players"? That could make sense -- three players when on a mission, and up to six when just roaming around -- but I personally haven't heard Bungie make any statement like that.
I'm reasonably sure they've talked about raids being six players at some point. It's hard to pinpoint any of the information since so much of it is from various interviews or mail sacks, though. And competitive will almost certainly have a higher player count depending on the mode - I would be shocked if they kept it all small-scale.

re: enemy ai.

Be careful what you wish for. Do you really want every grunt like mob to be some super smart ai being that takes a long time to kill? No, that is something that sounds better on paper than it does while actually playing a game. I'm sure the boss-like mobs or even some mini bosses thrown in will have some special ai qualities but please don't ask for fodder to be annoying to kill.

One potentially interesting twist on the usual loot grind: Each weapon and piece of equipment has its own individually tracked experience. In other words, your gear levels up as you use it. So, even if you find a powerful new machine gun, it might not be an improvement over your level 10 magnum – at least not yet.
This detail is new to me. Bungie had said they want you to feel attached to your weapons, and this is a way to sink those hooks in. So you don't just have some customized weapon from a great raid, it's one you've had for a while and built into something more powerful. As described, I like the sound of that a great deal. I already tend to get attached to unique weapons in RPG's.
WTF?????

If this is true and there's no 4v4, 6v6, or 8v8 in MP, I'm done with Destiny. Fuck this shit

EDIT: Someone make a thread about this. This is outrages

Pretty sure that means you have a squad of 3 - your fire team - rather than a limit on team sizes. Teams can have multiple fire teams.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who noticed the really quiet foley for footsteps? What's up with that?

The audio mix felt really off in the video. Game footage felt muted overall compared to the music. The voice acting for the drone bot was flat, is that temporary?

Most of it looks very appealing with the cool attacks. Bungie KNOWS they have good skyboxes with that pan to the sky :p

Helldivers is also doing capes in sci-fi, just a pattern I noticed.

Barely any constructive criticism though. Saying this game looks like X and Y from genre Z alone doesn't make it "boring". It might be something previously experienced, but the AI arguments I can get behind because I didn't see anything particularly impressive on that front. I'm not heavy into the PvP aspect, which I'm sure they're saving for E3 or for a later event, but I remember this being sold as essentially Bungie's take on Borderlands and that's what I'm seeing today. Can anyone not currently impressed touch on what they'd like to see to the game?

I went in expecting a 30 second trailer with 1.2 seconds of gameplay.

I was wrong, I also closed my eyes and pretended it was a new episode of Fringe =(

Also I know this is a new game and all but....I see Halo....everywhere, reload animations, running, enemy movement....

I thought we were gonna get a large amount of info today. I'm kinda disappointed. I mean the gameplay trailer was cool and all, but it didn't really reveal a whole lot. I just thought we were getting more than that today.

Maybe it's just me, but this isn't looking nextgen.

Development of the game took place on 360/PS3 dev kits for years, I believe. I mean, the game technically started development back in 2007, and Bungie likely wasn't aware of the PS4/XBO specs until late 2010 or early to mid 2011.

So, the engine and overall scope of the game was built within the realm of what the 360/PS3 can handle.

Nah, people in here want to see everything about the game right now. That is expecting too much. Literally taken one Strike mission as if this is the whole game. And describing the AI as boring is laughable. People should know by now that early videos like this will have the AI set to baby mode.

There is a difference between showing everything and showing nothing.
Either they have pretty much nothing more to show, or they're waiting too long.

I still remember how Bungie and Microsoft handled Reach's marketing. Incredible stuff all along.
You had the first big reveal which was centered around multiplayer and the beta.
Then at E3 we discovered the campaign, space combat and Firefight.
Then, in july we discovered the Forge. We had true announcements.

What I'm saying is... Bungie has been showing the same stuff for over a year. Each time the game appears, it's a rehash of what we already know (unless maybe the Moon trailer, but then again this is not about game features, just an environment). Considering it's an untirely new game, it should have more "announcements" than just a game sequel.

I could literally say what this game is about since the very first reveal, and even before, because the leaks were THAT detailled.

I like that part because I go for aesthetics instead of stats when I choose my character setup.

So having the stuff I like level up and be not be gimped because I opt to stay with it is alright.

The doll effect that I enjoy is unfortunately diminished because this is a FPS instead of a TPS.

Admittedly, I've never played Borderlands or Halo properly; I was instantly reminded of what Borderlands I have played, namely thoughtless mowing down of enemies.

Crazy how polarized the opinions of this thing are everywhere I look. Either "OMG GIVE IT TO ME; TAKE MY MONEY; INJECT INTO MY VEINS!" or "looks like shit."

I don't know if that's indicative of the "first-person shooter fatigue" so many people (myself somewhat included) are feeling, or genuine reactions.

No matter, I didn't find this gameplay very compelling at all. Visually it looks great, but as others have mentioned here it kinda seems like a soulless Borderlands. I hope it shapes up though, because I do want to like this game.

Yes I do. I don't want it to be a bullet sponge, but I would like for it to flank, seek cover, and use tactics to team up against me.
