New Destiny Gameplay

My bad...they have called it a " shared world shooter" but they have never effing defined that...so people have called it mmo because we have a basis in that

How can you have a game that lives up to a "shared world shooter" when certain parts are only played by 3 people. One less than their last game.

I hear you on that one. I just saw someone who works or knows the development of bungie I "assume" replied to Kotaku article saying what they showed was not what players experienced when they explored through story mode.

I feel like everything should be a bit more heavy in terms of reactions and impact. The enemies react as if they are lightweights. No, they don't float but still.

Yeah, they need more weight to them. Even some of the big guys are animated like they weigh 5 pounds (when they are hit).

I know there is a back story but I'm really curious about the stroy in game. Is there an end goal, cutscenes and such?

Yea they've said there is a main story line that can be completed solo or with 2 other people and after that it's a bunch of endgame strike missions. Urk actually talked about it on here a while ago.

Development of the game took place on 360/PS3 dev kits for years, I believe. I mean, the game technically started development back in 2007, and Bungie likely wasn't aware of the PS4/XBO specs until late 2010 or early to mid 2011.

So, the engine and overall scope of the game was built within the realm of what the 360/PS3 can handle.

Good point. Completely forgot that it's crossgen.

re: enemy ai.

Be careful what you wish for. Do you really want every grunt like mob to be some super smart ai being that takes a long time to kill? No, that is something that sounds better on paper than it does while actually playing a game. I'm sure the boss-like mobs or even some mini bosses thrown in will have some special ai qualities but please don't ask for fodder to be annoying to kill.

Depends on the game. Games like Destiny have some arcade elements such as the XP, grinding and loot systems. Unless your game is sim, it's pointless to give games like this "realistic" AI, especially when your character is too overpowered to allow the AI to counteract your agency (for instance, your super accurate crosshair for instance).

Back on topic: Like a lot of users here has stated - it's just dull. I suspect this has something to do with being held back as a cross-gen title. The 3rd person transitions is very distracting and the loot systems is just another typical exploit feature that pads unnecessarily in the game (I actually hate that shit in Borderlands).

The only positive aspects of this game is that it is has an extremely clean looking IQ -which would be very impressive if that was a last-gen title. Coming from Bungie, I expected a LOT more from them.. and this.... is not a very good way to entice me to purchase a PS4 for.

I STILL don't get this game.

The gameplay in the video was soooo slow. I mean they moved like a tank.
I guess if you really really like Halo and are waiting for Halo 5 this will make you happy.

But from a general FPS fan point of view this game does nothing to pull me in.
I keep waiting for teh x-factor... im still waiting.

This reivew bothers me. Not because it's negative.. but because the entire tone throughout the whole thing is negative. It comes across as if the author is tired of games in general and has a special dislike of shooters. Maybe it's just me though.

To me it came across like the reviewer is a fan of Respawn, and not a fan of Bungie or Bungie's style of first person shooter gameplay.

It's exactly how the write up came across.

1) I wish I was playing the ever-exciting Titanfall instead and 2) I don't know where a game like Destiny will fit in a landscape that's full of shooters.

So yeah...

I'm not expecting the moment to moment of Destiny to be as "exciting" or "fresh" as what we got in Titanfall.

I definitely expect the enjoyment of Destiny to last longer than the quick thrills of Titanfall though.
Exploration, loot, enemy aliens, different worlds....

Huh, that's strange. Can you post the specific quote.

The final piece of the puzzle, one that Bungie has yet to fully reveal, is the overall social experience and how that ties into Destiny's campaign. As Parsons explained to me, players are free to tackle the campaign alone or with two friends. Every mode is played with groups of threes, incidentally – even adversarial multiplayer – as Bungie feels it offers the best balance for the three available classes. Each mission contains both private and public spaces, meaning some areas are dedicated solely to your three-man team, while other areas will be filled with additional players.

Kinda vague. Hopefully it means you have a squad of 3 on a team with multiple squads.

Alright cool. I also want to see more of the exploration, hub city activities and open environments which will probably be at E3 or shown closer to release.

Crazy how polarized the opinions of this thing are everywhere I look. Either "OMG GIVE IT TO ME; TAKE MY MONEY; INJECT INTO MY VEINS!" or "looks like shit."

I don't know if that's indicative of the "first-person shooter fatigue" so many people (myself somewhat included) are feeling, or genuine reactions.

No matter, I didn't find this gameplay very compelling at all. Visually it looks great, but as others have mentioned here it kinda seems like a soulless Borderlands. I hope it shapes up though, because I do want to like this game.

I'm actually feeling a wee bit of Destiny fatigue, which sounds odd this early out. But Bungie keeps showing the same locations and types of encounters over and over. There's a lot more going on in this video than the last, but the scale, locations and general flow are the same. New locations, encounters, the city hub, broader scope, etc. would be welcome at this point. I'm surprised at just how limited this look is.

Graphically it looks amazing, especially in terms of its environments, which isn't surprising since Bungie are some of the best in the business in that department. Gameplay wise? I think it looks awful. But then again, I'm not a fan of Borderlands, and I'm getting HUGE Borderlands vibes. Hopefully the competitive multiplayer is ace, which I'm hopeful of considering Bungie's pedigree.

I'm just hoping this game doesn't tank Bungie. I don't see this style of game being an immense success, and considering the resources that've been injected into it thus far, that's what it's going to have to be. Hopefully I'm wrong.

To awaken the traveller iirc, and yes we have seen glimpses of cut scenes.

Anyone thinking this is going to flop really need to chill out, I have never been a halo fan but I have to admit there is too much pedigree and attention to detail going into this game for it to fall by the wayside.
They just need to make sure their net code is rock solid and the people will buy Destiny.

Still one of my most anticipated games this year but I got to say that I'm a little bit disappointed with what I saw in the previews.

No PC version.

PC version is undeniably in the works.

Nvidia has done showcases of the game to demonstrate some of their own tech.
Since neither next-gen consoles have an Nvidia GPU, this means this game has a PC version.
I also wouldn't understand why Nvidia would in any way benefit from investing research in a game that will never arrive on PC.

I enjoyed it. Kind of surprised that a lot of people are disappointed.

As some mentioned, the audio was a little weird though -- it didn't really sound like the Dinklage VO was mixed properly.

If I didn't already know that he was voicing the Ghost, I wouldn't have guessed that's who was talking. Sounded more like the player had Tyrion perched on his shoulder...

Seriously though the "inject into my veins" guys were only on the first few pages...mostly its been negative since then

Literally rolling my eyes at some of these responses.

Not even a major FPS fan, but this video has me excited. Looks like a lot of fun.

I know, right?

After hearing the initial responses I was kinda bummed then I watch the video as was like WTF this looks like it will be a fucking blast to play.....and the "crappy music" was fucking epic in my view!!

I am excited to play this game......sue me.....

What I think too. The shooter backslash is getting real I guess. The graphics are cool but the gameplay in this video is just dull. OK I'll shoot. OK I'll throw grenades. OK I'll hold that position for the next N waves of enemies... ***Yawn***

Good sound design helps too.

Now compare that to this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ojUNGVo-L48
or
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXLmy3U5u3o#t=497

IMO, Titanfall has raised the bar for pure excitement and adrenaline in a shooter.

September 9th, why yu no come sooner?

Would be day -1 for me if that would be possible.

To think it was originally slated for Spring 2014 so we could already be playing it if they hadn't moved it to September. Probably for the best that they did though.

Right.

I guess Developers could learn from this thread and put out 50 min videos showcasing everything with AI set to Death. Then just maybe people will be happy at first then depressed knowing they just saw the whole game.
I don't understand why so many people immediately jump to hyperbole. No one is expecting that they show everything in the game at once, just that they show more than yet another firefight in a building. Bungie wants to talk about how unique this game is but they have yet to show what's unique about it.

Hopefully they announce a date for the PC version around E3. I don't want to get a console just yet.

Seriously, amazing trailer. I don't understand the borderlands comparison, if it wasn't for the loot reveal that comparison would have never came up. Reminds me of the best moments of halo 1 (coop, open map, satisfying ragdoll physics, magnum)
From what we know, Destiny appears to be a mission based open world co-op RPG-FPS with levels and class specials and loot whoring. That's a lot of what Borderlands brought to the table.

I'd prefer if it wasn't so close conceptually, as I'm not sure that power levels will help a Bungie shooter. If it was a straight up shooter with different equipment and mods to collect I'd have more optimism towards it as well as the PVP. The fact that everything in the game has levels just make me think of grouping issues, PVP imbalances and microtransaction opportunities. But it does have my crazy curious to see how its all supposed to work.

The 3 person limit appears to only be in the Strikes, which have been described and demonstrated to be like Dungeons in RPG's (smaller groups, linear, set piece encounters). Max party size in other places was either 5 or 6 as told in one of Bungies podcasts. Raids will require multiple Fireteams (parties).

I'm reasonably sure they've talked about raids being six players at some point. It's hard to pinpoint any of the information since so much of it is from various interviews or mail sacks, though. And competitive will almost certainly have a higher player count depending on the mode - I would be shocked if they kept it all small-scale.
Cool, thanks for clarifying! That three player limit sounds much more nebulous than I thought.

It seems as though Bungie is still keeping way too much under wraps as far as details about the story, hub world, and how this shared world differs from anything else out there.

I'm all for surprises and wonder when I first boot up a game, but when you refuse to translate more than just an ounce of your ideas into actual gameplay for all of us to witness and understand, it just leads to confusion and doubt. It is Bungie though, so I have complete faith that they can pull this type of universe off, but as it stands, the marketing and exposure for Destiny has been severely lacking in my opinion.

Quote that was echoed across nearly all previews:

Gamespot said:
I got a chance to play Destiny, but was limited to a frustratingly narrow slice of the game.

Why is Bungie holding this game so close to their chests? The game comes out in September and we still have zero idea how any of the social elements play together, how the world is interconnected or any clue to what the campaign is about. With these elements being possibly the most exciting parts of the potential of Destiny, it's hard not to remain indifferent when all they show is some Firefight styled mission where you have to defend a generator.

Looks good but just something about the player movement that doesn't sit right with me. Looks a bit floaty.

I'm not feeling this game at all. I mean, I like what they're trying to do, but that looks way too similar to Halo. I grew tired of Halo gameplay with Halo 2 and this game doesn't look all that different tbh. :/
