Visually I'm not a fan of this device IF its legit. I'll reserve final judgement once it releases though and I see if either things change on it or if it actually works/is marketed and received like they intend it to be
Anyone thinking this is the "portable" should look at those analog sticks, look at a Wii U pro pad and look at their pocket. This is not a "portable" device
It's not REAL either, but come on guys. How big ARE your pockets that you could think this is "portable"? The oval screen is an even bigger waste of space if it were.
I really just want to scream "it's fake!" Only because I am not too fond of the design. With so many leaks happening lately, I think this could be at least an early prototype or something.
I just don't think on screen buttons are a good idea and Nintendo should realize that. What is the point of them when you can make the controller a bit larger to add physical buttons?
Well that's not entirely true either. GAF has a hard time giving something a chance and it's either the greatest thing ever or totally garbage.No. We're just a handful latching onto archaic tech when compared the masses of casual who are in deep love with new tech of touch screens.
Make a cookie or something shaped like a hate and eat it problem solved.
Just look at that stupid thing.
It's too dumb to be a real thing that Nintendo is doing.
-Nintendo
You've lost me.
We are talking about why this is a photo of just the controller, which you implied must mean that (if it's real) there is no console.
My answer is:
- Controller is the headline news here
- Devkit box is less interesting
- Devkit box more likely to be identifiable and traced back to source.
Yeah, honestly i haven't been following NX rumors, and I didn't know Nintendo basically patented this exact thing (i thought the sketches in the OP came with this leak) so even if this isn't it's final form I guess we can expect something similar.
This is a rather good fan mockup of what the thing could work like

It looks sort of cool, i'll admit.
Still I don't see the freeform screen offering possibilities far beyond those of the Wii U controller, or anything else that used a regular 16:9 screen.
Should really double as a handheld to be attractive imho.
It really is a good one. They've thought of everything :b
Only issue I can find is that possibly the right nub is slightly further away from the edge than the left nub. Difficult to confirm due to perspective, but seems slightly out to my eye.

Still the freakout threads regarding the Wiimote was awesome. If anything, NeoGAF is anything but a good indicator for these type of things. So we agree on that part.
hud/virtual buttons/life-ammo etc. It also opens up now forms of control/play. The idea is not new, there are videos floating around on what would be possible with this. What the fuck would be the point of building the screen to the edges if your fingers/hands will block it? It makes no sense.

I think you might have lost it period. Bit rude. But whatever
- Headline is irrelevant. Redditor saying that this is a devkit is relevant. By headline I mean the interesting part of the devkit. Redditer doesn't speak English too well so I wouldn't read into his/her grammar
- Depends on the devkit. And if I would have it, I would photograph it. Well kudos to you. Others might not.
- If you are afraid of being identified, you wouldn't tell everyone being a developer. Who would be that stupid? Are you saying they aren't afraid of being identified?? I'm saying that's a possible reason why they didn't photograph it or have blacked it out on the photo

It shouldn't be a problem unless you're Dr. Zoidberg. It can't be worse than some DS games that treated both screens as one.
I think that might be perspective. I dunno, but those analog "sticks" seem so weird that it pushes this into "legit" territory for me. I'd think that a hoaxer would have included either traditional sticks or circle pads.
Answers in bold.
Yeah it's the details that are starting to pursuade me, too. Definitely looks like a real physical object either way. And if they've built that then it's very, very nicely done. Can't stop looking at how precise that bezel is!

Sold.
As long as it has physical buttons.
Yeah, that's how I view it too.I'd say in the last decade concerning mobile gaming & nintendo, the general gaf hivemind was:
wrong about DS
wrong about Wii
50/50 about 3ds
right about wiiu
wrong about mobile gaming
50/50 about psp (leaning to wrong, but it did very good in the end, mostly because of it's success in japan)
wrong about vita

This thread is huge and it has probably been brought up, but the sticks look like they could use the Touchence tech.
Its a choice of words, not grammar.
For fucks sake, if you would be afraid of identification you wouldn't tell the world what you are.
While many posters here seem to fear the lack of buttons, I think once it is fully explained, it is something that many people would be compelled to try. Especially if haptics are a go.
Thanks. Fair enough. Still doesn't exactly make sense to me since the costs of developing/manufacturing a screen like that probably outweigh the player's benefits of it.
The guy on Reddit is claiming that there is a "Savonette" like cover for the thing.

The only thing that would block the screen is your thumb at the edge on either side..nothing else should.

I actually think this visually looks pretty cool.
My problem with it isn't that I think the idea is stupid, nor do I think the controller looks ugly or uncomfortable.
My problem is that I don't see why they think this would respond to the problems Wii U has. This uses almost exactly the same gimmick. Except now the screen takes up more of the controller.
The only gameplay change really over the Wii U is customizable input interfaces but same old problem as always - if there are no raised surfaces for a regular input method, then it's an inferior input mechanic to a physical button.
