I don't remember you saying any of that to me... I was just responding to some of the claims you made about the game being an interactive ad and all of that.
Well is that my fault? I clearly said I don't care what anyone thinks I'm not going to pay full price for a game with a bunch of ads. I'm not a diehard Deus Ex fan. This is actually my first Deus Ex game.

so because you don't care what other people think we're supposed to leave the thread? even as other people continue to raise their annoyance at any one who isn't similarly annoyed?

and if we don't leave a thread after you declare that our opinions are meaningless to you, then that means we must be PR people?

am i following your logic correctly?

Hold on, where did I even say anyone should leave the thread? Get it right before responding.

Ads for free casual style games: alright. I'm not immersed or anything and I understand the need for revenue. There's a push and pull here and I signed up for it when deciding to join in the fun for absolutely no money. If I don't like it, I leave, like changing the channel.

Ads for full retail game that intends on being an immersive experience - Are you shitting me?

And saying "I don't care" is not a defense, it's not a counter argument. It's a meaningless phrase. Do you prefer it or not? If the answer is "not" then you don't want it.

Nope the goodwill is still here and It sounds like they had talked about it before the game was out anyway, I am one of the one's that don't have an issue with it.

This is retarded. Do you really think a game of this scale could be profitable on ad revenue alone?
Your thinking is backwards. The point is not that we want free games like Deus Ex, the point is that if we're already paying for the game, we should not also have to see ads.

But here comes the publisher defense force again, thinking about profit margins before the player's experience.

Just played the game and wasn't signed into PSN because I didn't accept the new terms yet, and saw no ads. I guess playing like that is a way to not see them.

Yeah, the game has become a parody of itself, lol

The fact of the matter is that the ad-subsidised iteration of the game should be offered free of charge - that cannot be disputed. If people have paid, you should, at worst, be tucking ads away with trailers and so on away in an "extras" section.

Can't wait for the day crass commercialism can be beamed right through my eyes into my brain.

"Didn't you have ads in the 21st century?"

"Well sure, but not in our games. Only on TV and radio, and in magazines, and movies, and at ball games... and on buses and milk cartons and t-shirts, and bananas and written on the sky. But not in games, no siree."

(paraphrased from Futurama)

The ads are bad but what I find particularly egregious is the specific act of patching in ads after the game has shipped. 'Cause they know it would have tanked their review scores.

That is shady. as. fuck.

I played the Steam version yesterday, saw about 6 or 7 loading screens without an ad before stopping the game.

If we only see 1 Star Wars ad every 10 loading screens, i don't see the big deal. Especially when Deus Ex loading screens on my PC last only 3 or 5 seconds.

Serious Sam is a wicked gahbidge series for chowdaheads.

Well, whether or not it should be "completely free" can be disputed. Just because something has ads in it doesn't mean that you get it for completely free.

Seriously subsidized? Sure.

Could be that the ads are region based. Not seeing any of the ads on my PS3.

I think their schema for presenting ads is either completely busted or just downright weird. I had a friend load the game no less than 10 times (with different scenarios, like loading to a previous save, loading to a new area, etc.) and he still hasn't seen an ad. I had him check his game files and he did in fact have the advert for Star Wars people are seeing.

This is the only part I have a problem with. Ads on the loadscreen are no big deal to me. The fact that they kinda snuck them in is shady.

It really shouldnt matter how often they come up..

No response from devs? I really want to hear their explanation for the shadiness. Still so support them when thief 4 comes but this definitely leaves a slightly bad taste in my mouth.

Yeah, it's hard to get immersed in a good loading screen when those stupid ads are down there in the corner, know what I mean?

Do I prefer it? No, I would prefer there being no ads in the game. But guess what --- I still don't care that they're here because in this particular instance they aren't bothering me at all. That's what's awesome about being a sentient being, you can judge the pros and cons of each situation individually instead of having to make a binary black or white blanket decision when it doesn't make sense to.

Sorry if I'm coming off as kind of abrasive, I just feel like some of you guys aren't really thinking this through before you voice your reaction.

Anyone who feels strongly about this should let them know on twitter and their facebook fan page if they have one. That'll actually probably get stuff done.

People that get angsty about this while having a cable subscription are hilarious. It really is the same concept.

Well to be fair, it's not very realistic to expect a game to surpass its all but perfect predecessor, Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Yeah yeah yeah we get it, you don't care. Why is it so hard for you to understand something that doesn't bother you may bother other people?

As many have said the worst thing about it is the sneaky way they patched it in (or time delayed it.) In addition I think ads during load screens are particularly annoying as you're a captive audience. The reason more devs/pubs haven't done this is I think they realize it's annoying too.

Wait, what? It's not the fact that it bothers other people that irritates me, it's the finer details of what they're saying. First of all, Mr. B Natural makes the claim that his immersion is somehow affected by these ads, which I frankly found to be kind of ridiculous. However, I was really only responding to that (sarcastically) on my way towards the meat of his comment, the idea that "I don't care" isn't a valid opinion. He said this:

And saying "I don't care" is not a defense, it's not a counter argument. It's a meaningless phrase. Do you prefer it or not? If the answer is "not" then you don't want it.
All I was trying to do is point out that I can still not prefer it and not care at the same time, something that he tried to frame as impossible. I would prefer that Deus Ex: HR not have ads, but I still don't really care that they're in the game.

It's not the immersion that pisses me off, it's the way they're handling it. I understand this was most likely a publisher decision and not a developer one.

Problem is, the ads started showing up after the patch. Not a day before. Not a day after. Yet, they swear up and down it wasn't in the patch.

I could swallow this a lot easier if they would just level with us. Something like:

We don't like having to do this, but obligations make it necessary. Yes, it was in the patch but not the reason for the patch.

Instead we get angsty tweets.

But really..what is there to really think about? There's an ad in the game, people dont like it so people complain.

All your posts have basically been reworded versions of "it doesnt bother me, why should it bother you."

No, my posts are reworded versions of, "it doesn't bother me, and let me tell you why since you questioned my opinion."

I'm defending my opinion just as everyone else is, what's the big deal?

Ads during load screens, hardly immersion breaking as some claim.

It is, however, a slap in the face to everyone who paid £30+ for the game, but then I doubt the sales alone will have been enough to reclaim the amount of money they pumped into development, so with that in mind, I don't mind them making a few extra £££ but only if it means the developer gets some more money which they'll put towards the next game in the series.

If they can't even break even from sales, then the whole project was fucked. Ad revenue at the 11th hour shouldn't be the difference between a success and a failure.

Also I thought the game sold very well. Is there some news I missed?

The game has sold over 2 million copies already, its far from a financial failure. It is weird that they would put ads in the loading screen, but I'm used to seeing ads in things I pay for. Xbox Live has like 2 rows of ads in the main menu now, and my Comcast cable likes to interrupt other TV commercials to let me know about more services that they offer.

Oh Gods, imagine if Thief 4 has these ads.

"Like Thi4f so far? Buy Payday: The Heist on PSN for more thieving fun!"

I can see the shitstorm brewing from here, and it's beautiful.

I assume you mean ads during the main feature.

"Terminator 2: Judgement Day™ will be baaaaack©® after these important messages. Hasta La Vista, Baby™"

So the argument against is that they'll put Pepsi billboards in Skyrim?

I'm not going to trade in a fun game because there's a Star Wars advert for 3 seconds on a loading screen. Not that I'm all for ads in games, but it doesn't seem like it's that big a deal for the most part. Strange that no one has so far complained about the Final Fantasy 'advertisement' in the actual game.

Of course, I meant ads at the chapter changes, or imagine an ad everytime you select an option in the dvd/bluray menus

Because that's clearly meant as parody. Star Wars Blu-Ray ads on the loading screens, no matter how unobtrusive, aren't.
