Someone who knows Japanese, translate the fourth question in the Famitsu interview. Itagaki seems to say that the game is only 5-10% finished, but I want to make sure.

Yeah he says that it's probably about 5-10% done. They're still early in development, but the game engine is running and they have multiplayer battles and stuff running. He says there's still a lot of polishing to do, more stuff to make, etc. Basically, it's running now, but it's not anywhere near complete.

I'm going to view this title without Ninja Gaiden goggles on and just say that it looks camp and fun.

As Westernized as this game looks, I wouldn't be surprised if the difficulty was dumbed down a bit. I'm just hoping that the gameplay doesn't end up being watered-down considerably.

So we shouldn't even bother expecting this on current gen hardware? Even though it's been announced for it..

Not sure what to think yet. I guess I need more details on the game to understand what's going on. Could have done without that filter look to it or whatever. Could be cool though. Will keep an eye on it.

I dunno what you mean. He's just saying the game is very early now. It's probably a 2011 title.

You guys seriously lack taste. The Specialist's was a multiplayer mod for Half-Life, it mixed guns and melee combat in a multiplayer arena environment with acrobatic movement, to this day it is still one of my favourite multiplayer titles because I can't think of another that's attempted that and got it right.

This looks like it might just do that, be better, and essentially be different from anything out there that's relevant right now if the balance between ranged and melee combat is spot-on.

My only worry is that it's completely multiplayer focused. I hope whatever single player element is pretty substantial as well.

You know, I like it. Crazy action multiplayer game with swords and wall-running and dudes with miniguns.

Given how popular multiplayer shooters are this gen I can see this being Itagaki's best selling game to date.

interesting parts.
combat
"In looking at real combat, close combat has a more visceral bloody feel to it. I want to get more of that close combat feel in [Devil's Third]," Itagaki told Kotaku. "It's not taking a hack and slash game and tacking on some ranged weapon combat. We feel we have a lot to learn as we make this, but we also feel confident in our experience and the fundamental elements of head-to-head competition in [our previous] games."

multiplayer
THQ's Executive Vice President, Danny Bilson, glowingly describes the game's multiplayer experience as "phenomenal." It was Valhalla's original multiplayer build—and Tomonobu Itagaki's personal point of view—that urged THQ to sign the developer.

"We green-lit the same day," Bilson recalled. "Within 10 minutes of meeting Itagaki-san, I wanted to work with him. There was no hesitation at all. It was all about, how do we make a deal and how soon do we make a deal?"

devil's thrid meaning and fiction
Devil's Third's background is the Kessler syndrome theory.
The Kessler syndrome basically says that the density of objects in low-Earth orbit could reach a point where collisions between those objects could cause a cascade of debris. Those collisions could compound, causing more orbital collisions, a scenario that could render space travel and the use of satellites unfeasible.

As for the name, Devil's Third, Bilson and Itagaki said it has multiple meanings to the fiction and the characters, the first of which is rooted in classical music, in the dissonance of tritones or "Diabolus in Musica." Bilson referenced the works of Richard Wagner, including his Norse opera Götterdämmerung, and the music of Black Sabbath, in explaining the concepts behind the game.

As we expose some of the fiction, it all becomes clear," Bilson says. "[The title Devil's Third] absolutely came out of the game, there's a character in the game that has a relationship to the music, there's three factions…" Then he cut himself off.

Bilson says there has been "a tremendous interest" in Devil's Third's fiction as THQ extends its transmedia plans. The publisher has television and movie projects in the works based on its Red Faction and de Blob properties.
development
At Tecmo, we sold 8 million games on Xbox platforms," he said. "Because of the financial requirements of that company, every year we had to kick out something that sells a million units. When I was younger, that was OK, but some of the games we shipped we really didn't spend enough time polishing and tightening up. Under those conditions, it's very hard to make a great game that people will enjoy, because it's important to have the polish and testing. In that kind of environment, we couldn't do that."

"We think that the way we make games, we don't fit well working in an environment inside a publicly traded Japanese games company," Itagaki said. "We don't fit into that environment."
Recently, I've changed my thoughts about the general approach to development. The parts of the game that we really have to make, that only [Valhalla] can make, we'll do that. For the parts that other people can do better, we'll get help. Yes, we'll be working with THQ studios, but the multiplayer demo we showed earlier, that was all developed internally. The way programmers think, if they can do it themselves, they'll do it. You have to do everything triple-A or just not bother."
to fans
A lot of fans probably wanted me to continue making fighting games. So, sorry about that to anyone who's disappointed," he said.

"For people who are fans of Ninja Gaiden, this is going to be a different type of game. Quite different. Even though the genre is new, it's the same core group making it. Think of the main elements—animation, maneuverability, speed, violence, beautiful women, all the core game elements, it's all the same group of guys."
The Tank is from Homefront
Bilson pointed out that the tank seen in Devil's Third's first trailer is an asset from another THQ game, Homefront.

I don't think it'll be completely multiplayer focused, but a lot of attention will be headed that way from a marketing and development perspective imo.

Does this mean it was developed on the PS3 first?

I'm sorry but did you guys see the same video I just saw? There's fucking guys running across the wall Ninja Gaiden style and someone blows them up with a...argh fuck it.

Itagaki did not dissapoint. Day 1.

Ugh. Why is it that with all this generation's focus on shooters, Gunvalkyrie is still the best one ever made? And none of these look nearly as interesting or imaginative?

He doesn't seem to say either way, but he confirms that Valhalla is working on both versions of the game. He says that if they don't write the code for the engine themselves, then it's not their game and it wouldn't be Devil's Third. He claims that an engineer who was involved in coding the RSX and CELL is working on the game as well.

there's really no similarities at all

Maybe it's the Nintenwhore inside me but seeing the person running around switching between swords and guns, made me instantly think of Red Steel. Then again, it could be the fact I wore my Red Steel shirt a few days ago, so I actually was forced to think of it recently.

I'm the biggest Itagaki apologist around and I found that underwhelming.

Basically blaming Tecmo for rushing Ninja Gaiden 2 out the door.

Yep, they are. It also sounds like Valhalla and THQ's engineers are working pretty closely together.

Whoa...only 5-10% done? And they're showing it this early? I'll never understand the Japanese developer percentages of completion thing. Looks, uhhhh...interesting. Interested in how it turns out, but I gotta admit that it doesn't appeal quite as immediately as NG did, stylistically.

It does look a bit early. I'm guessing a March 2011 release at the earliest. At least this will give them some feedback and time to address any complaints though.

It looks like there will be a lot of platforming with people jumping from a multi-storied building to the ground and running on walls. It's hard to tell about the shooting, but it looks like there may be some type of lock on targeting and perhaps you're able to evade it and come in close for hand to hand combat. The footage could have been entirely multiplayer though, so who knows.

I was hoping for something more colorful and stylized, but the gameplay looks promising. I really hope they spice up the graphics some because it looks like the presentation is really holding the game back.

Well it looks like an interesting concept, actually. Curious to see real gameplay, wonder how they balance it out
