[DF] Death Stranding Director's Cut PS5: The Digital Foundry Tech Review

Sony still not supporting VRR is baffling. Especially when they are supporting things like mouse and keyboard + ultrawide.

You need a Sony TV with VRR to be able to enjoy VRR on PS5.

You see Sucker Punch? That's what enhanced update mean and definitely worth the price. Take note. Though I don't love particularly this game.

Digital foundry has been very lazy lately. They didn't even notice that days gone was more than a frame rate bump. It has vastly improved LOD distance and extra vegetation into the distance as well. None of that was mentioned in their video.

because it's not true? the game literally only got an fps boost

this was still at the time where developers were seemingly locked out of changing graphics settings for PS5 enhanced patches of PS4 games

Nothing super surprising tech wise. Interesting how they have changed the map. Would have never noticed it myself.

Might be a good title to test the age old "what GPU matches the PS5" question. Settings seem identical apart from AF, but the related impact is minimal. Anyone with a 5700xt/2070S, please run the first fragile meeting cutscene at 4k max no DLSS and report back here!

Ultra Wide quality is the way I'm going for this...with the OLED the black bars wont be a problem and itll provide a noticably different experience than my first play through.

So now they do Tech Reviews?

People that have never programmed a game in their lives now review tech they know nothing about?

They should stop at measuring framerates.

they don't support ultra wide, the game has an ultra wide mode that simply renders less of the image and widens the FOV
The Order 1886 also ran in ultra wide, which they did to save GPU resources, that doesn't mean the system supports it

Somebody quickly tell MKBHD to stop reviewing phones ASAP. He has never built a phone!

Bro if you are not a physicist you are not going to peer review a physics paper.

This is technical stuff we are talking about, it is a TECH review not a normal review.

Kojima Productions also actually went it and "reshot" some of the cinematics too. Basically they moved around some of the characters and objects in some cutscenes to better fit the spacing in the wider shot.

Yes of course on PS5 its still outputting as 16:9, but its not quite the same as just an FOV slider. They change to a brand new camera shot.

Great to see them let the native 4k mode run at an unlocked framerate. It mostly sits at 60 fps but drops in cutscenes and boss fights.

The 5700xt also averages 60 fps at native 4k but at max settings. PS5 version doesnt seem to have max settings so with its higher tflops count it should be able to run at an average of 60 fps too.

Maybe DF can do a comparison of boss fights and cutscenes between the PS5 version and the 5700xt to see if they are identical.

Average 60fps != solid 60fps. You need to look at the min framerate stats on PC, not the average.

For the average gamer DF looks like tech guys but hosnestly if I were a game developer wont thrust on them to do the test QC before a game goes gold.

They do nice videos and most are fun but saddly their voice is a rule for a lot of people

they had to do that because they didn't have an FOV slider in there. IMO stuff like that should always bee considered from the very start but at least they actually went in an properly optimised it

and they know the tech. John programs and models backgrounds for his DF Retro episodes, Alex also dabbles in stuff with Unreal engine etc.

they also talk to developers directly and learn about new tech and how engines work.

so they know the tech, and can also review it.

Yeah but its not the same as just an FOV slider. Like Rocket League has an FOV slider on console. Not the same as this.

Just increasing FOV results in a distorted fish eye lens look. Not the same as readjusting the camera position and using a different focal length lens. Of course the FOV is increased, but its not the same as just going from say 70-80° to 90-100° FOV.

This is a scene in the game in ultra wide. Notice the framing. Notice the lack of curvature / lens distortion on the egdes.

Now lets crop it to 16:9. Notice how tight it becomes. This is how it looks on PS4 playing in standard 16:9 mode.

Again, the game essentially was "reshot" for wider aspect ratio. It's different and more detailed than just zooming out FOV.

My pc is easily doing 4k120 4k with quality DLSS.... but I am curious to check out the ps5 dc for changes and dualsense

if you drop some of the settings a bit to match PS5 it could actually run basically locked it seems.
there are dips into the 50s during in the rain and it also dips in cutscenes.

so maybe drop the shadow settings a bit and it should be pretty much locked. also I don't know how much AMD CAS costs in terms of GPU power, but it's completely useless here and could also be turned off.

additionally, he is recording the footage, and if he uses recording software on the same PC he is playing on this would also mean a small performance impact, meaning without recording the screen it should also run slightly better.

So I bet you could get an almost locked 4K60 with PS5 like settings for sure, maybe still with drops during cutscenes because they tend to make heavy use of DoF which will absolutely hammer the GPU at high resolutions

It's not rendering less, it's fewer pixels sure but there's more in the scene.

Also The Order was no different to this, an artistic choice to offer a wider aspect ratio. There's no evidence that it was done purely to save "GPU resources".

Ummm okay, but I took screenshots of the same save point on my PS4 Pro and my PS5 and the PS4 Pro version is inferior graphically compared to PS5.

Og5MpTR.jpeg

PS4 Pro. Tow truck is also missing it's front wheel. That will pop-in when you get closer (LOD)

ihMS08H.jpeg

PS5. Notice the extra grass detail into the distance as well as the tow truck has it's wheels back?

The extra polygons in the mag wheel under the table. PS4 Pro on the Left

wiarpF8.png

PS4 Pro, look by the sign that's facing away from Decon. No grass

W6u3dzy.png

PS5, lots of grass

JolSth6.png

PS4 Pro. Look by the cop car and under the red truck. No grass

0NGbans.png

PS5, lots of extra grass by the truck and cop car. Further draw distances.

Edit: I first noticed the extra detail when I played it on PS5 because I specifically remember hating how many low-poly objects there were so close to the camera on PS4 Pro, and when I saw it was fixed on PS5, I was pleasantly surprised. Sadly, DF never picked up on any of that. They just looked at resolution and frame rate.

of course it was due to GPU constraints, the game would not run smoothly in full screen, they are literally rendering 26% less pixels than a native full screen resolution would

it could be that the game uses a dynamic setting that is based on GPU load. the Forza series does this, where the game drops settings as the GPU hits its limit. it changes stuff like Car LOD and Antialiasing dynamically to adjust during heavy GPU load

Its actually due to the PS5 being unable to support any wider ratio output resolutions.

The console can only output 3840 x 2160 or 1920 x 1080.

Only way to fit a 21:9 game into a 3840 x 2160 output container is to render 3840 x 1645 internally and output as 3840 x 2160 with black bars.

I'm talking about The Order here,

Death Stranding does it because "why not" basically... The Order did it to save GPU resources, pretty obviously

That's cool, but still, Digital Foundry never mentioned the extra detail on the PS5. That was my whole point.

Just watched.

So, I don't have a wide-screen monitor, but can I still play in widescreen quality mode with the black bars in order to get my full real 4k at 60fps instead of the regular quality mode which has more drops?

Things you show here can be easily popin issue and they happen on Horizon too. I really really doubt it's better LOD, simply ps5 is faster to load some details where on pro take more cause in some capture some details doesn't appear just in time. I said that because Days are Gone still runs in BC mode on ps5 and hardly they can increased the LOD setting.

Holy shit what a unplannedly hilarious reply :messenger_tears_of_joy:

ok man, they are so expert they model backgrounds and have Unreal Engine on their PCs!

I have done those things as well in my free time but I don't have the narcissism to make "Tech" Reviews.

This a classic case of hearing without listening lol
