DF Videocast #1: Hands-On With PS4 Pro + More From EGX [27:16]

I'm starting to like the look of what I see from PS4P more and more.

I was planning on waiting a while but I'm really thinking about picking one up in time for FFXV, which seems like it's a game that's really going to need the extra grunt.

After seeing the PS4Pro running at EGX, I think it does a really job of gaming on a 4K screen. £350 is a terrific entry point for playing on such displays.

I really hope that the devs make the most of the techniques being used to display titles in this scenario.

I feel like people with a 1080p sets are going to benefit more from the Pro than 4K. That super sampling business sounds like it's gonna make games look great on 1080p.

I hope you're right. I don't wanna spend a great deal of money on a 4K HDR set. With HDMI 2.1 coming up, HDR vs. Dolby Vision and high prices for a great tv atm, I'm gonna wait. Actually I don't want to wait, but it's still early days for HDR 10 / DV and I feel I'm gonna regret buying a set now. But damn, hearing these HDR impressions is gonna make waiting damn hard.

I wonder how Arks PS4 release will function, at least it has to hit a 1080p native resolution on the Pro along with frame rate parity for PS4.

They've just managed to get it to 720p on Xbox One and it's rough.

So on the fence with a Pro, don't have a PS4 yet but so many games I have still to play on xbox and PC.

Wonder how old that build is. Figured a pro version of CoD would hit 60 consistently in single player. It looked rough in the video.

I'm holding off on buying a 4K TV until TV networks start broadcasting in 4K. It's going to take several years for that to happen since the infrastructure has to be upgraded. By that time, there will be plenty of 4K TV options that will be very affordable.

Huh, surprised that at least in MP IW didn't have any improvements other than resolution. The SP footage looked way better in terms of lighting and shadowing than the standard PS4 footage we've gotten.

Hopefully they bump up the AF in the Pro version (that'll be more noticeable at higher resolutions) and do something about the aliasing while standing still.

Another DF video about PS4 Pro, hmm
You guys sure like the system, never saw so much promoting about another console from you guys :)

Well it's big news. Of course there is a lot of coverage. Especially since information and demos come dripping, not all at once

To be fair, I'm assuming they expect a lot of people to be researching the differences before a purchase and to cement them as the go to place for this information to people who may not have heard of them in the future. They're about to get a lot more material to cover with these interative consoles.

I'm glad Dark talked about the difference between how checkerboard rendering looks compared to standard upscaling and how it's not the same as 900p on a 1080p screen like we're used to. That's been my biggest takeaway from what I've heard about the goals of this console and it's good to hear it from him since we're both picky about that in much the same way.

They called it interlacing, I merely repeated it. And they even showed this footage to visualize it to us.

It's more like dithering...but Interlacing was their description, sorry.
It's the same artefacting that was seen in Shadowfall MP, but less severe due to the bigger resolution bump and their TAA solutions.....

DF however is quick to jump on any issue like this and generalize it, however I think it will be fair to see how particle effects behave in other titles to gauge consistency. There are many titles being Pro.Mastered, so lets blow up the particle effects on Deus Ex, Battlefield etc... .to see if it's indeed a side effect of checkerboarding or is it just some low res effects on this particular title.

Dark? What are you talking about?

Of all the announced pro games, which will support supersampling?

We know that Paragon will stick with 1080p, and that RotTR will have option for higher framerates at 1008p. Rest are for now oriented at increasing resolution [and giving supersamling to 1080p TV users].

Lol, this is right up their alley. Just wait until the console is released with a couple of games. We are going to get comparisons left and right XD.

I know most of the talk here is focused on PS4P with this video but on a side this video got me even more pumped for GOW4. Damn that's looking good!

Does checkerboarding have any similarities with the frame reconstruction technique that Killzone Shadowfall used in its multiplayer? I remember that being really impressive, and it took a long time for people to figure out it wasn't native res.

The hilarious thing is that people accuse them of Microsoft bias when they do Face-Offs and they "downplay the differences between each system!".

Digital Foundry: Sony fanboys on Mon-Wed, MS fanboys on Thu-Fri!

I'm still waiting for them to be accused of being PC fanboys because they would shockingly say that a PC version is better than the Pro version. (You know it's going to happen)

4k sounds like 1080i, sharp static images but you can tell when its moving its not exactly 1080p.
I think thats the best way to describe it.

I think you're wrong on this one. It didn't take long for people to figure something was off about shadowfall's MP, it was blurrier and had some weird artefacting unlike SP.

But yes, it's an improved version of what Shadowfall did, but more enhanced with AA algorithms and less artefacting at a much higher resolution/ pixel count. So it's a highly evolved version of shadowfall's reconstruction technique.

What's the name of the top-down racer at the end of the clip? They should put informational text over the game footage videos as they come up for the first time in their discussions.

When is that happening?

When is our Lord and saviour having this talk?

I wish I could tell you. A couple weeks back, it was said to happen 'within 2 weeks' however, to my knowledge, it hasn't happened. Some speculated it would happen at EGX. I don't think it has or will at this point.

It is happening, apparently, but I do not know with who or when, just 'soony'

To be fair, it's pretty well documented that last gen there was some truth to it. Even in the second half of the gen Leadbetter would still regularly get caught sucked into the 360 hype since that console started with the edge in multiplats, downplaying things like the large quite noticeable FFXIII advantage that the PS3 had, etc, while simultaneously still playing up the times 360 still managed an advantage.

in fact I wouldn't be surprised if this is the standard approach for Scorpio development.

I wouldn't either.

Though if it is then they will have definitely been purposefully misleading for the last year about being native 4K.

Yup, it sounds like everyone who's seen it in person comes away quite impressed.

Nice video, but John interrupted almost all the time when Tom was going to start talking. That bothers.
Yes, I know. First time doing this and this was the second take since the camera battery died the first time. I was getting impatient and trying move things along forcefully in order to avoid silence but it didn't work. I've ever done anything like this before and it sucks.

Goddamn it I'm gonna have to get one of these TVs aren't I.

What bothers me about all this HDR stuff is then having to worry about getting a tv with the "right" HDR. Is it HDR 10 or something?

Pretty much all new 4k TV's will fully support HDR now so I wouldn't worry too much, its only some of the 2015 / early 2016 models, that got a firmware update, which won't fully support HDR, although even they can still look great if calibrated correctly.

Your being too hard on yourself. You were great and you communicated what you needed to.

You did fine, it's extra difficult here because you're not just talking to us the viewers but also to your fellow DF person, and it can be hard to do smooth hand-offs even if you're doing a pre-prepared talk to an audience.

It's not the same but when I've had to prepare those kinds of two person talks I found doing a lot of 'fake' talks to a single person would help, we'd set out some rough talking points beforehand and then get someone to sit in front of us and practice going through them with smooth transitions back and forth between us. Really helped to get our flow going and figure out the natural times we take a beat and the other person can cut in.

The thing I've never quite mastered is speaking speed, I always tend to speed up when talking to a camera/groups of people, but I think that's just practice.

No idea if any of that is helpful.

Wonder when we can expect some more information about game support. Seems since the meeting news has gone dead silent again.

Interesting, thank you!

Don't be hard on yourself. Your content for DF has been excellent and I've enjoyed seeing you on camera more and more. It takes time to develop these skills, and you're making great progress. I didn't notice anything off with this video, it seemed pretty natural to me.

Can't watch the video with sound right now.

Did they get to see anything at 1080p? Is Sony showing any demos on 1080p displays?

This just confirms that the Pro is an ideal 1080P machine (if devs patch their titles). It's what the PS4 should have been. It's not an ideal 4K machine.

-Price this is a big jump from PS4 without breaking the bank
-It looks native 4K when you aren't moving (still images)
-This is not a typical 900P/1080p situation because the pixel density is already so high
-Checkerboard rendering is good
-Some more simple games, will be 4K
-Downsamplying is good until I upgrade

Well there you have it, the checkerboard rendering looks great on still images, but once you get moving, things don't look as hot, so similar to 1080i vs 1080p but not as bad, sounds like a pretty good compromise, although in fast paced games and racers, you definitely want native.

It's interesting watching the die hard pixel police "come to terms" with the upcoming sub native approach while this gen's resolution shitupons boast about vaporware. Good times.
