Dictionary of cultured/smart-ass gaming words

PresetError

Neophyte
This is intended as a fun, light-hearted thread. Today I was thinking about the words and idioms I know that I woud never use if it wasn't for my interest in videogames. Very specific words that heard from the outside of this hobby must sound very weird and oddly specific and even smart-ass.

I'll start.

"Ludonarrative dissonance"

"Vertical slice"

This is actually a lot of terms we use. Try to speak to a regular person about gaming stuff, and you're instantly conscientious of how much technobabble and abbreviations we actually spout.

META, or Most Effective Tactics Available (it long since has shifted from the actual definition of the word Meta), is a good one.

No ks... I remember as a youngling playing MU Online and there was always an asshole stealing kills.... And everybody spamming: "no ks... no ks... no ks you piece of..." Good times.

I hate it when people use stock names for companies.

Like "I think NTDOY should release more games".

GTFO

You don't see it as much these days but a few years back it seemed like a trend for some reason (although there's still some fucking bonehead here who refers to Microsoft as MSFT, can't remember who it is).

They're the ones that developed GoW. I love GoW, great series. Have you ever played GoW?

One phrase I've seen co-opted by gaming recently is "holding back", all over the fucking place. Sad.

I may be missing the mark a bit...but I feel like everybody says "getting lost in that world" in reference to EVERY fucking game nowadays....inherently, it isn't wrong and I can't suggest an alternative...but I bugs this shit out of me.....

oh...the term "organic" "authentic" "grounded" got thrown around a lot with TLOU and then it started buzzing around...

also...it rubs me the wrong way whe people say "narrative" and "story" together like one is THAT much different in relevance to the other or the overall product...it's like...motherfuckercocksuckeryou're not impressing anyone
