I'm sympathetic to those who say that Racoons can be good animals too and we shouldn't just go around hurting them just because they aren't our pets.
But in this case, it wasn't just some random, innocent racoon. Either that dog or that racoon was going to get hurt if we simply refused to interfere. Further, it's unreasonable to expect the man to simply pick up the racoon and carry it to a safe location, teeth and claws furiously attacking the entire time.
Let me put this another way: I think many of the people who are arguing this behavior is okay would be much less sympathetic if there was no dog in this video, and the man just walked up to a racoon scrounging for food and tossed it down a flight of stairs. Context matters.

Raccoons are nasty creatures. If you ever give a thought to having one as a pet, please PM me and I will unspool a story so awful I don't want to post it on GAF, because I don't want to ruin anyone's chill Sunday.

Just a couple nights ago I was taking the trash out to the apartment dumpster. The dumpster light was out so it was quite dark at like 3am.
Started to walk up the steps to throw the trash in when one popped out. It just looked at me and looked like if I came any closer it would have pounced on me. Looked mean and I wouldn't be shocked if it was potentially rabid. Saw some stuff around its mouth but it could have been from the garbage.
I got the hell out of there until it walked away. I did not expect it to just stare me down like that and take a couple steps forward. I figured it would immediately run. Big motherfucker too.
Basically, fuck raccoons. Luckily my dog wasn't with me.

My dad worked for children's protective services for over 30 years, recently retired.
So, ok. There were two raccoon incidents. Don't click unless you're the type that enjoys visiting ogrish sites. I'm serious.
1. Pet raccoon got into the crib of a newborn and
tore the infant's throat out
2. Pet raccoon attacked and
ate the face of a toddler,
be fed through a tube for quite some time, as he lost his lips and tongue.
Raccoons are nasty. I am not someone who enjoys hunting, but I would happily shoot them all day long just for fun.
I think this is less the racoon being "nasty" and more that they're not suitable for pets.
I don't think tigers are "nasty," but when kept as pets they frequently cause lots of harm too. This isn't because they're evil animals or anything, they just aren't well adapted to living with humans.
Racoons fall in to that unfortunate locus where they look cute and cuddly but are actually quite dangerous animals. At least with a tiger everyone knows ahead of time how seriously they can injure you; a racoon looks deceptively harmless to many people. Further, because they live around us in urban areas, we figure they are used to hanging out with humans in a way that tigers are not (which, again, is wrong).

Just because they are pests raccoons are treated with scorn. Nature developed quite an animal. Just two days I opened my door at night and one was in the driveway. It climbed a huge ass tree like a koala and then just sat at the very top in the branches looking at me. I turned on my phone flashlight and saw it's two eyes staring me down.
I take my dog for walks late at night and always see them, or skunks or possums. I'm not really scared about letting my dog out at night. He pees throughout the day on fences so I'm guessing the raccoons know an 86 pound pitbull lives here
