Digital Foundry Tech Analysis: Titanfall

60 fps sounds amazing, I'll be picking this up for X1. I really like the emphasis on gameplay before anything else. Considering Respawn are brand new and have a much smaller team, a title of this magnitude speaks well of their future.

I still don't see whats so special about this game. People keep saying it looks impressive, and how it was one of the best games at e3.what about this game is so impressive? I would like to know.

Sometimes I actually wish for a competitive game with less graphical spectacle. Many games have become so overloaded with effects that you can have a hard time locating and focusing on targets.

Have you seen TitanFall? Lol. It's probably busier on screen than most online games, so good luck with that lol.

It's got mechs in it and it is not brown.

So how is that supposed to work in places like Australia?

I keep hearing about how amazing these dedicated servers all over the world will be... But that kind of ignores that not all the parts of the world actually have a cloud server.

Microsoft has a few Azure Data centres in Asia Pac, Singapore and Hong Kong. They do have nodes in Australia, so latency isn't so bad.

However, they just announced this year more Azure sites are being built, and Australia is getting two new centres 'in-country'.

Pro's and cons...

If they get the Xbox One version running at 1080p and maintain the 60fps by launch, then the Xbox One version will be the one to get, because of the servers...

If they don't, PC version will have the advantage.

That is providing you want to play the PC version at 1080p and not some larger resolution display.

pc has dedicated servers too you know.

Read the OP and it seems titanfall falls short in some areas refraining it from being "next gen" visually. Personally, I find Respawn's goal admirable and it's quite alright with me even if it isn't 1080p native. That said, I'm really jaded on how drab the environments look.

This isn't some tiny startup; Azure is everywhere.

This image is outdated, but it certainly shows it's reach. Expect there to be even more CDN locations by now.

This is what I mean by PC'ers loving it. Reminds me of earlier shooters that were fast paced with a lot of movement.

That looks *so* good and I hate arena-type shooters, usually. This looks like a great balance. Fast-paced, but not too fast-paced.

Really cant wait for this. Between this and BF4, I should be set for competitive multiplayer shooters for quite a while.

Microsoft are currently installing 2 MASSIVE Azure/Xbox Live data centers in Australia, one in Sydney and one in Melbourne. They're doing the same in many other countries as well.

And how many data centers? They currently have around 8 data centers, 4 in the US. That leaves the other 4 to service the rest of the world. What good is a CDN if it has to connect to a data center halfway around the world?

That was just a general statement, I don't care to much about Titanfall right now. I actually had Battlefield 3 on consoles in mind.

So...wait. The XBOX One can not display a fucking source game engine @1080p/60FPS with tons of FSAA? Source engine...the engine that runs on my "ok" pc with crazy high downsampling res and tons of FSAA @well over 100FPS.

Is this a joke? Behold the power of 1,1TFLOPS.

thank you. there was a distinct lack of this in the thread. money hats to blame.

You are a funny one!

It's not the same Source engine.

For those expecting "normal" Source engine - don't. Those super smart coders (like Calen in this thread!) have re-written a massive amount of the codebase. The renderer is completely new (multi-threaded, DX11, 64bit, etc.), along with all the sound code, netcode, input code, etc. There's a lot of cores on the Xbox One, and the coders are actively working on utilizing them as much as possible.

And because they are so "super smart" the game does run sub 1080p? Ok.

Right... because everybody knows that game engine development is extremely easy and game engines consist only of an unevolvable renderer...

The game doesn't look jaw dropping gorgeous. There are many current gen shooters that look comparable, but the 1080p/60fps/high AA makes it really stand out. It also helps that the game looks like a blast to play.

Can't wait.

It'll mean a better experience for you, they specifically use Australia as an example of how the cloud servers help in this video - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6F8kI_kWIMk

Pretty sad really, considering the kind of garbage computer you could use and get 720p/60fps on Source engine.

The game isn't even done yet and is probably around a year from releasing, how about people hold the bitching till we get closer to launch and see how its running?

edit: regarding the 1080p stuff, not necessarily the static level design stuff.

The demo shows a largely static level by design, with no procedural damage to the environment in the manner of Battlefield 4 or The Division, nor rag-doll physics - everything is set in stone, and not even the grass or trees animate.

:/

Fair enough that the gameplay is similar to cod, but why do the graphics have to be shitty too? If I showed this game to the average cod player they would think it's some spiritual successor to cod with mechs.
I have a dream that cod type gameplay with incredible graphics will happen next gen. I was hoping Killzone shadow fall would be but they have disappointed me with the announcement of 30fps target.

Updated the OP with this quote:

Lol nevermind. It's pretty obvious from your first post that you have no idea what you're talking about. Carry on.

Well, I have eyes and I can read. Titanfall looks average at best (!) and if it's not 1080p, it's a disappointment. Even if it's cross gen, a capable hardware should run this at 1080p/60FPS without further questions. Either the devs are incompetent or it says alot about the hardware it's running on.

The game isn't even coming out this out year. Obviously there will be some graphical and possible resolution bumps. Sure, those changes might be small but they will still be there.

Other than clicks, I don't why digital foundry is looking at games that aren't even coming out this year.
