Digital Foundry vs. Dead Rising 3

I saw these still frames over on Reddit today while I was at work, I thought they were a joke and couldn't look that bad. I guess they do look that bad.

Jesus Christ.

One would hope that even if it does end up a technical mess and doesn't sell to projections, that MS or at least Sony/Nintendo would see the benefits in funding a fourth title..

Hell, I'm sure Capcom's finances can't be in that bad a shape that they couldn't afford to fund a fourth game. Do it internally on the MT FW engine to save a few bucks if need be...
Every generation there is one or more titles that are poor even for launch games, but sell really well because it's what there is to purchase. Normally it doesn't seem intentional but in this case, it feels like they go to a point and said 'this needs to be out, what else are people going to buy"

LMAO, wow.

I honestly thought the framerate of Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 enhanced the game. It helped make it feel like the ground was shaking whenever the larger colossi moved. Was kind of sad they made it stable on PS3.

If you play it in 1080p or 3D, you can get that feeling back. or you could just blink a lot really quickly.

you maniac.

This is why new console launches are great. Folks get caught time and time again in their endless spinning.

It was quite amusing seeing hindle get exposed in that ryse thread where he supported the game after that post about uncharted and heavy rain killing the industry a while back .

Ok, I was expecting everything except for that framerate.

All the big sites have been telling us the framerate had been fixed, that it was running fine now, and we get this? The game seems fun but this is just terrible. Couldn't they just delay it instead of releasing it in this state?

That horrible texture seems to be due to a texture streaming issue/bug, not because it looks that bad all the time.

Or just cut down on the zed count? If 720p wasn't enough of a sacrifice to make than hitting framerates in the teens and as low as 10 should have been the last straw.

They serve a purpose. Should they be used as the final word on whether the game (or any game) suffers/doesn't suffer from issues? Of course not, but I don't believe it's entirely fair or accurate to keep posting gifs from this footage and pretending that's all there is.

As to other footage, there's plenty of recent footage that doesn't appear to show frame-rate or texture issues like those in the DF footage. Could the DF footage be retail? It could be, but then this would be something that's pretty unheard of for me, a game that performs better in near final build previews than it does in final retail code...

Having played a build that was silky smooth, the idea of playing a version that performs more like DR2 is both heartbreaking and gut wrenching...

I heard on the joystiq podcast that they had frame rate issues also and they were told it's was near final build so I think those issues are for real

The DF gifs are to highlight problems with the game. They do not claim that all of these problems occur all of the time. We can see that in the other gifs. GIFs of the bits of the game in between these issue aren't really instructive *in a thread like this*.

I really hope the final game is 30 fps pretty much locked, because then I will put it back on my list of 'reasons to buy an Xbox One'. Trust me, I want to want one sooner rather than later.
In the podcast they said when they were driving a vehicle the frame rate dropped. Especially the faster they drove in the game

Capcom should just drop the res to 540p to get that silky smooth 30fps locked in. Maybe even drop back the zombie count a bit... It should still be better than the Wii vesion of DR

Well, I watched the video.

And that was pretty disappointing- drops to lower than 20 frames are really inexcusable. The amount of pop in, strange clipping, and subpar performance is more than worrying.

The game continues to look like a ton of fun in nearly every gameplay clip I've seen, but it definitely looks rough. I was most worried by pieces of the map getting lost in the industrial/grey vibe, and sure enough from what was shown, that felt like the case.

I kept saying throughout that this was the game that I would spend a lot of time with if I got an Xbox One- the initial E3 unveil was really poor, but everything that followed looked like ridiculous fun. The weapon combinations even in this video seem amazing- but the instability really kills it.

Oh, and dat framerate in ElTorro's gif- baha, so much love for your amazing work!

Great lighting, solid textures, very packed and busy environments, lots of zombies on screen, open world, no loading times etc. But of course all of this becomes far less impressive if they can't fix the framerate.

One thing that gives me hope is that people actually playing release versions of DR3 (people like Adam Sessler and Brad Shoemaker) haven't remarked about the fps negatively.

Those people are rather not reliable for technical and game playability opinions IMO. Trust your own perception and the fact that sub 30fps is just not great for your mind and eyes interacting with your hands.

It looks like Ryse rysed up while DR3 goes down in the past few hours in Amazon bestseller ranking:

Still not enough to take the ranking as the most preordered Xbone game though.

Fairly disappointing it looks so bad. You would think that with Microsoft paying for it that they would help to make sure it looks an runs well but this is not the case. Not buying any console at launch but it was the launch title for the next-gen consoles that I was the most interested in. At least it's not totally unexpected from the studio if we take into account the state the Dead Rising 2 console version was and take into account that they were working with new hardware.
