That doesn't look any better than pc, in fact the textures look lower resolution! Wait till console come out, and bookmark my quote. Come back and be disappointed with all the PR. This is actually funny to see people react to the hype train.

From videos, it definitely is not on pc ultra settings. Not only that, but where are the other examples? Especially games that Microsoft haven't exclusively optimized just for a showcase for their system? If people really think a console can beat a gpu that costs 2x as much as the console... I have Jamaica for sale.

So why does compressed footage of pc ultra look better? Textures look better, etc. Why wouldn't MS try and sell not only their hardware, but their own game? I mean, who wouldn't do that? I just pointing out facts. PS1 was the weaker console yet it wiped the floor with the competition. PS2 was weaker again and yet it went onto sell 120+ million. Xbox 360 was console that devs could easily pump out good quality games without having to wrestle with difficult architecture and yet it wiped the floor with the PS3 which was said to be the stronger console but again Sony had to pull it back from the brink and they did so with great games.

PS1, PS2, Xbox 360 all had great games libraries. PS4 has great games and Xbox shot themselves in the foot with focusing on creating an all in one box.

Its just the games that counts. We will see once PS5 is revealed with specs. We will have the same thing happen on the forums that has been happening since forever. And that is one crowd of fans boasting about the power of their chosen plastic box over the other when in reality it will always come down to which platform offers the more compelling software and services.

Github was correct about XSX. It showed 56cus, which is correct for the die. Also remember the XSX dev kits will have all 56cus active, just like the XOX had all CUs active on that dev kit.

If I’m not mistaken the game isn’t optimized though. The port was made in 2 weeks. This according to MS (DF vid).
Youtube absolutely trashes video quality. You cannot judge a game by it. That is a known fact.

I mean you can look it up and see the differences. Why not compare the game at native 4k to 4k specs? One is native, one is optimized exclusively by it's own, Microsoft, as well as UPSCALED to 4k. Current gpu's can run the game upscaled to 4k, way over 100fps. Why not optimize pc? Let's see the NATIVE 4K results.

1. He says they were shown internal testing data that showed the 2 week old Gears 5 port was already running at a performance equivalent to a RTX 2080.

2. Minecraft Demo is fully Path Traced, like Quake II RTX.

Why fast storage changes everything

The specs on this page represent only the tiniest fraction of the potential of the storage solution Microsoft has engineered for the next generation. In last year's Project Scarlett E3 teaser, Jason Ronald - partner director of project management at Xbox - described how the SSD could be used as 'virtual memory', a teaser of sorts that only begins to hint at the functionality Microsoft has built into its system.

On the hardware level, the custom NVMe drive is very, very different to any other kind of SSD you've seen before. It's shorter, for starters, presenting more like a memory card of old. It's also rather heavy, likely down to the solid metal construction that acts as a heat sink that was to handle silicon that consumes 3.8 watts of power. Many PC SSDs 'fade' in performance terms as they heat up - and similar to the CPU and GPU clocks, this simply wasn't acceptable to Microsoft, who believe that consistent performance across the board is a must for the design of their consoles.

The form factor is cute, the 2.4GB/s of guaranteed throughput is impressive, but it's the software APIs and custom hardware built into the SoC that deliver what Microsoft believes to be a revolution - a new way of using storage to augment memory (an area where no platform holder will be able to deliver a more traditional generational leap). The idea, in basic terms at least, is pretty straightforward - the game package that sits on storage essentially becomes extended memory, allowing 100GB of game assets stored on the SSD to be instantly accessible by the developer. It's a system that Microsoft calls the Velocity Architecture and the SSD itself is just one part of the system.

"Our second component is a high-speed hardware decompression block that can deliver over 6GB/s," reveals Andrew Goossen. "This is a dedicated silicon block that offloads decompression work from the CPU and is matched to the SSD so that decompression is never a bottleneck.
The decompression hardware supports Zlib for general data and a new compression [system] called BCPack that is tailored to the GPU textures that typically comprise the vast majority of a game's package size."

PCI Express 4.0 connections hook up both internal and optional external SSDs directly to the processor.
The final component in the triumvirate is an extension to DirectX - DirectStorage - a necessary upgrade bearing in mind that existing file I/O protocols are knocking on for 30 years old, and in their current form would require two Zen CPU cores simply to cover the overhead, which DirectStorage reduces to just one tenth of single core.

"Plus it has other benefits," enthuses Andrew Goossen. "It's less latent and it saves a ton of CPU. With the best competitive solution, we found doing decompression software to match the SSD rate would have consumed three Zen 2 CPU cores. When you add in the IO CPU overhead, that's another two cores. So the resulting workload would have completely consumed five Zen 2 CPU cores when now it only takes a tenth of a CPU core. So in other words, to equal the performance of a Series X at its full IO rate, you would need to build a PC with 13 Zen 2 cores. That's seven cores dedicated for the game: one for Windows and shell and five for the IO and decompression overhead."

Asset streaming is taken to the next level, but Microsoft wasn't finished there. Last-gen, we enjoyed a 16x increase in system memory, but this time it's a mere 2x - or just 50 per cent extra if we consider Xbox One X as the baseline. In addition to drawing more heavily upon storage to make up the shortfall, Microsoft began a process of optimising how memory is actually used, with some startling improvements.

"We observed that typically, only a small percentage of memory loaded by games was ever accessed," reveals Goossen. "This wastage comes principally from the textures. Textures are universally the biggest consumers of memory for games. However, only a fraction of the memory for each texture is typically accessed by the GPU during the scene. For example, the largest mip of a 4K texture is eight megabytes and often more, but typically only a small portion of that mip is visible in the scene and so only that small portion really needs to be read by the GPU."

Microsoft has partnered with Seagate for its proprietary external 1TB SSD expansion. It's very short, quite weighty for its dimensions and actually presents rather like a memory card. As textures have ballooned in size to match 4K displays, efficiency in memory utilisation has got progressively worse - something Microsoft was able to confirm by building in special monitoring hardware into Xbox One X's Scorpio Engine SoC. "From this, we found a game typically accessed at best only one-half to one-third of their allocated pages over long windows of time," says Goossen. "So if a game never had to load pages that are ultimately never actually used, that means a 2-3x multiplier on the effective amount of physical memory, and a 2-3x multiplier on our effective IO performance."

A technique called Sampler Feedback Streaming - SFS - was built to more closely marry the memory demands of the GPU, intelligently loading in the texture mip data that's actually required with the guarantee of a lower quality mip available if the higher quality version isn't readily available, stopping GPU stalls and frame-time spikes. Bespoke hardware within the GPU is available to smooth the transition between mips, on the off-chance that the higher quality texture arrives a frame or two later. Microsoft considers these aspects of the Velocity Architecture to be a genuine game-changer, adding a multiplier to how physical memory is utilised.

The Velocity Architecture also facilitates another feature that sounds impressive on paper but is even more remarkable when you actually see it play out on the actual console. Quick Resume effectively allows users to cycle between saved game states, with just a few seconds' loading - you can see it in action in the video above. When you leave a game, system RAM is cached off to SSD and when you access another title, its cache is then restored. From the perspective of the game itself, it has no real idea what is happening in the background - it simply thinks that the user has pressed the guide button and the game can resume as per normal.

We saw Xbox Series X hardware cycling between Forza Motorsport 7 running in 4K60 Xbox One X mode, State of Decay 2, Hellblade and The Cave (an Xbox 360 title). Switching between Xbox One X games running on Series X, there was around 6.5 seconds delay switching from game to game - which is pretty impressive. Microsoft wasn't sharing the actual size of the SSD cache used for Quick Resume, but saying that the feature supports a minimum of three Series X games. Bearing in mind the 13.5GB available to titles, that's a notional maximum of around 40GB of SSD space, but assuming that the Velocity Architecture has hardware compression features as well as decompression, the actual footprint may be smaller. Regardless, titles that use less memory - like the games we saw demonstrated - should have a lower footprint, allowing more to be cached.

It sounds like a standard external drive you can hold all games (BC and SeX games), but if you want to play a game using SeX settings, faster loading and the perks associated with it, it has to run off the internal (or customized external) SSD drives.

So depending how many games you have and play, you either bite the bullet and play some games at normal HDD settings, or you start moving files around to the SSD so it runs the game off that.

I don't mind moving games back and forth between the SSD and HDD. I have a 400GB data cap, once something is downloaded its staying there, I'm not wasting data redownloading a game when I feel the urge to play it.

I’m very happy with the XsX CPU clocks and everything sounds amazing but is it really equivalent to HIGH END CPUs on the market right now? I thought it was more mid-range by Gaming Rig standards
In terms of bleeding edge CPUs? Sure, this isn't a threadripper, and still not in the range of an i9 or Ryzen 9 CPU, no argument there. But comparable to a Ryzen 7 3800X? I'd still put that in the high-end CPU list when packed into a console, myself.


lol are you kidding? i'm not gonna feel bad for an opinion, that rtx demo wasn't impressive at all for me, i don't give a fuck if minecraft is the most famous game in the universe or whatever reason you have, deal with it.

mine wasn't an analysis on the current state of rtx or fake rtx, it was just a straight opinion on this particular tech demo.
and don't kid yourself, that stuff is not a better or more impressive example of rtx compared to fucking nothing, realistic reflections, lights and shadows on a game that looks like mushed pixel vomit still looks horrible, i don't give a damn if conceptually and theorically is the best use of rtx on console, it still looks straight trash.

i almost don't care about rtx in realistic game, imagine how much i care when applied on the game with the worst graphics of the last 2 gen...

I'm assuming this means the new controller will have a sealed battery like the piece of shit DS4. I hope it at least has battery life like the Switch instead of the dumb ass 4 hour DS4.

I think I will be stocking up on XB1 batteries for next Gen.

The Elite 2 already has a built in battery pack, and it feels like the longest lasting out of the lot. I easily get 40+ hours out of the thing.

I mean one thing is for sure, these next gen consoles are clearly not going to be in the same boat as the current gen was at launch. Those specs are really good. Looking back at what the consoles this gen were capable of I'm really excited to see where developers go with this new hardware.

I hope they use the same battery for the regular XsX controller then. 40 hours, that's comparable to the Switch and although I'd still prefer changeable AAs, I could live with that. At least it's about 10 times longer than the crap DS4 battery.

Series X will run the entire X1 library with NO emulation. BC for it is totally hardware baked

25TFs of performance while RT is on. [away from the Goossen ambiguation we can take this to mean that the Series X won't lose any of its TF prowess as RT work is off-loaded while the shaders run in parallel]

I'm not even done reading. This IS a monster eater!

Man the more I hear about the Series X the more I think it’s a beast and a huge step up for consoles. This coming from a PC gamer who’ll always be paying premium prices for that higher end experience...XsX sounds like a helluva value and big step up.

People bitching about this or that spec when it’s not even out, and when this thing is overall looking like a beast of a console, really need to just wait and see what’s coming. That Gears 5 demo should speak volumes for anyone who knows a damn thing about how that compares to current gen’s output

If you count Jason Schrier and various media outlets (that picked up on a Sony patent and ran with 'No load times') as Sony then yeah.

So to answer your question. No, Sony didnt come out and say no load times. The only people connected to Sony who mentioned load times was a Naughty Dog developer who mentioned 'lightning fast load times'.

Notice the difference in messaging between someone who is working with PS5 vs an industry insider and gaming media outlets.

I just watched both videos. Going to watch Austin's too. Can't get enough. I'm absolutely loving what I'm seeing and hearing.

So just to confirm, Machine learning will surely automatically upscale all Xbox, 360, One games to 4k and add HDR to all of them, correct? No need for any patches whatsoever from devs. Right? Please say yes :messenger_beaming:

It is literally not that at all. It is because they only licensed Seagate for starting out and eventually they will have more, guaranteed. But the slot exists because nothing on the market touches the nvme cards and are easily added or removed from the console. But keep being foolish. It looks great on ya.

1TB won't do anything with todays game sizes and patches honestly
To be honest I never as a problem with space this gen. Just delete and reinstall when I need to. I only rotate between about 3 games until I’m done with them. If I get the urge to play something I usually just plan ahead and start installing it while I play a MP game or some smaller indies that take no space. Never bothered me.

The machine looks really solid and powerful, nothing that was shown related to gears of wars excite me, I would like to see Hellblade 2 and see if the Trailer that was shown on TGA looks the same in actual gameplay or Cutscenes. I am eager to see the game offerings from the studio that is located in Santa Monica.
 
Everything sounds amazing except for that memory setup. Hopefully that virtual memory will work to make up for it. Want to hear devs unfiltered opinions.

Impressed by the auto HDR and work to lower latency.

I had no intention to get the next xbox but the DF video got me a bit hyped for it. I want to see what devs can do on this thing.

Do we have to wait 3 more months?..

This is a bit too presumptuous because we have no idea in what capacity AMD has designed theirs.

Its a extension to the TMUs that traverses aabb trees and does triangle intersection tests. Doesn't look like it'd be useful for much more then raytracing then again its a closed system so it might get used for something else.
