DiRT 4 Review Thread

The comparisons to Horizon are really killing my hype for this game. I havent read all the reviews so Im curious where it comes from. Is this game a dumbed down version of Rally or does it have a wider array of sliders so that it can be cranked up to a Rally like experience?

From everything Ive seen and read, it sounds like its debatable if the physics have been toned down or improved.

Either way the consensus seems to be that its easier to control with a controller

I was seeing that other thread being bumped a lot but I didn't know it was coming out so soon

DiRT Rally was the first rally game I had played since Sega Rally on the Saturn. I really did enjoy the game in it's earliest early access period. But eventually the courses became way too technical for me and I uninstalled it from Steam.

Is the proper DiRT series more "arcadey"?

On the flipside, as someone interested because of the comparison to Horizon, I have not seen a compelling argument as to how that is even accurate. I was hoping for a return to Dirt 2 thrills and let Rally have its off-year audience, but this isn't really looking to satisfy me either.

Starting to wonder who this game is for if there are measures that scale back the challenge and skill threshold of Rally, but also little done to glamorize and embellish the off-road antics as in Horizon and prior Dirt games. Getting a Rally with some training-wheel assist more so than Horizon vibe.

there are both styles in this game...Simulation and "Gamer" (arcadey)...you pick which one you want

Yes, the DiRT series is far more arcadey than Dirt Rally. But the Colin McRae games that were before DiRT aimed for authenticity.

Dirt 4 is somewhat a marriage between both, more of an authentic focus on rally, rallycross with the simulation handling and hardcore focus of Dirt Rally with no rewind etc.

BUT it has a new arcade (gamer) handling mode that feels far more similar to the original DiRT games which let you get away with a lot and feels pretty good. It isn't as arcadey as Sega Rally was but it is far less serious and challenging than Dirt Rally is.

Yet it has the simulation handling model which is more advanced than Dirt Rally if you feel inclined to move to a more challenging experience.

YAY!!!

"But the Colin McRae games that were before DiRT aimed for authenticity."

No, not really. The stages in the CMR games were structured like authentic rally stages and not just circuits as in Sega Rally, but the handling was completely arcade-like, even by 1998's standards. There wasn't an "authentic"/realistic (and well done) rally sim until Richard Burns Rally, which is still the best (with mods).

I think they aimed for authenticity but at the time, there was no real barometer for such things since there wasnt that many rally games in the market. Over time there were titles that got more "sim" while some others stayed a bit arcadey.

So I think CMR was sim for its time but yea, in retrospect, its not a very accurate sim.

I feel like even at the time CMR 2.0? was criticized for a car model that appeared to pivot on a center point as you drove, as opposed to one that had four contact patches on a surface. But I don't recall if those were legitimate concerns or if it just looked that way because of camera weirdness.

Ehhh, The first CMR came out the same year as Grand Prix Legends which was a landmark title in sim racing, so it's not like there was no point of reference even at that time.

Don't forget they had the format of the WRC with all the stages and names of the time as well. If the driving model didn't quite hit it, there was a target for authenticity at least.

I gave up on Dirt Rally because the AI had a huge advantage in the rain and snow.

I might get this down the road if the challenge level is more even across countries.

Yeah, me too. Also it was just too hard to be competitive with a controller and Sweden was fucking ridiculously hard since there was no grip and the courses were tight as hell.

Awesome that we get Dirt that is actually playable. I do understand why some people liked Rally, but I didn't have patience for it.

I honestly prefer DiRT Rally to even a modded RBR. Even though RBR might be technically the more authentic sim, I just enjoy DR more.

I think i'm going to skip this or wait until a big price drop. I'm only interested in half of the game (the pure rally stuff) so i'm not prepared to pay full price.....After Dirt 2 and especially 3, i pretty much gave up on Codemasters but Dirt Rally was fantastic. I wonder what Dirt 4 means for Dirt Rally and if we will ever see a proper Dirt Rally sequel? Until then, i will just keep playing Dirt Rally, which is perfectly fine by me.

This is kind of how I'm feeling right now too. I loved DiRT 1, liked DiRT 2 a lot, disliked DiRT 3, abso-fucking-lutely LOVED DiRT Rally, but so far from what I've read of DiRT 4 I am still very undecided. I'm waiting to hear more firsthand opinions on the PC version this weekend before I decide if I'll buy D4 or just keep playing DiRT Rally instead.

I was so very prepared to buy any and all DLC for DiRT Rally but nothing never came. What I really want is a DiRT Rally 2 with a better career mode, more tracks especially hill climbs (Mt. Washington!!!), and just overall generally improved, but DiRT 4 is not that game apparently. I'd eagerly pay $60 for a proper DR2 but I'm just not sure if D4 has enough rally content to justify that price for myself, as I have zero interest in landrush or rallycross.

Is it just me or are there there some Driveclubb-y lookiing assets in there? Not a complaint .. all the more reason to get it sooner rather than later :) As Driveclub was awesome

Just wondering if this is the first game that Codies and Evo Studios done since they took on the Driveclub team?

I don't think there's anything wrong with that. RBR is 13 year old software stitched together by the community and it wasn't like it had fantastic presentation or anything at the time of its release. Dirt Rally is a far more cohesive and engaging package.

Just bought the Day One edition for $40 from amazon, with free same day shipping (prime).

Sounded like a good deal to me.

waiting for VR support. i cannot go back playing racing game on a flat screen after investing on ps vr + t150 + wheel stand pro

Plus cars in up to CMR2005 seemed to have some strong magnet pulling them towards ground making going over bumps and jumps really weird.

No, but that doesn't mean they didn't offer some help during the development. Evo and co. are working on a new IP.

Does anyone recommend me dumping my G29 and getting a t500rs? Would it really be worth it? I have a stand, the shifter, the whole setup for the g29.

Ah very good. Thanks for the info.

I can't speak for the G29, but have the 300RS just because of Dirt last year. From what I read at the time, the FFB is similar (if a little stronger) and there's an extra pedal for clutch amongst other minor additions, but having played with the 300RS, there is no way I'd go back.

I've never had any trouble with the installation on PC or PS4 (I even wore out the spring on the acceleration pedal, and Thrustmaster replaced the whole thing within 2 weeks - but this is a known thing, so don't know if its the same for the 500RS).

Force Feedback is awesome, and there are some custom FFB settings available for download from the RaceDepartment that add a whole new level of immersion to the drive experience.

hope this helps

Dang, it's already coming out? Pretty excited for a proper DiRT 1 sequel without any of the xgames Xtreme tude

Played a bit on PS4 Pro today and fans of Dirt Rally like me shouldn't worry about it being too arcadey. The simulation / hard-core mode feels amazing, better than Dirt Rally IMO.

The weight transfer, suspension and differences between FWD and 4WD is even more precise.
Also, so far, it's 60fps and looks better than DR.

I wish we had those prime deals over here in Germany/Europe. That would make my purchase decision so much easier. 70€ is just really steep, especially knowing the game will be 40€ in one or two months.

That "next-gen" price hike from 60 to 70 $/€ really made it more difficult for me to warrant buying games at launch.

I managed to get it 2 days early and my copy arrives today super hyped as a long time Codemasters fan.

Btw where is |OT|?

A few questions from someone who loved Dirt Rally:

* Is simulation mode the same driving and physics model as Dirt Rally? Any upgrades or downgrades?

* Is Pike's Peak in this? What are the main differences in locations and stages from Dirt Rally?

The game looks phenomenal, and if it has the driving model and content from Rally, but with a more user friendly career mode I'm easily in on day one.

How is the controls with controller in simulation?

Also any decent settings for the T150 wheel or is it pretty decent out of the box?

Simulation mode / hard-core seems like an upgrade to me so far. I have yet to dig deeper but it feels more precise and the 4WD/AWD physics seem significantly improved.
In fact, physics are better overall, weight transfer feels more realistic as well as the suspension behavior.

I don't know about the tracks though.

How is the controls with controller in simulation?
Perfect, even better than DR.

Is this a bit more 'accessible' (for lack of a better term) than Dirt? I liked Dirt but found it a bit go grindy, and tough to progress later on.

Odd, though, that despite all that content Dirt 4 feels more limited in what it offers than Dirt Rally. The five locations on offer give a run-through of every surface you'd hope for in an off-road game - from the compacted snow of Sweden to the dust and dirt of Australia - but, Wales aside, none of them stir the soul quite like Dirt Rally's Finland, Greece or Monaco. The absence of iconic stages such as Sweet Lamb, the Col de Turini - and, for that matter, Pike's Peak - really hurts Dirt 4. No amount of randomly generated content can offer an effective replacement for such legends.
:( :( :(

Much more. Racer is a great middle ground with Simulation being almost as thick as Rally though it absolutely feels stickier than Rally especially side stickiness. But its a great Forza Horizon to Forza Motorsport

I've played every Dirt entry to date and put a lot of time in to each of them and so far I'm loving this game. I found Dirt Rally frustratingly hard at times and then all that Gymkana bs in other entries turned me off quite a bit so this is a nice middle ground for me.

One thing Dirt games always remind me of is how much I wish all racing games were menu based track selection and that I'm so fucking sick of open world racing games. It's refreshing to just jump in to a level and start racing without any of the nonsense found in open world games like in Horizon where I'm always trying to figure out where the fuck I'm at (both on the map and progression wise) or how to get in to the next race and waste a ton of time traveling when I just want to fucking race!

Please some developer out there answer my call for a good street racer without an open world... that's actually good of course.

Nice, thank you.

That would make two of us. All I want is a track-based Burnout this gen so I could die in peace. So sick of open world BS.

I'll be skipping this even thought DiRT Rally was my GOTY of '15. I really want to see a graphics re-haul / new engine. Dirt Rally looked decent enough, but just doesn't hold a candle to Driveclub, Horizon 3, etc. Doesn't look like a 2017 game.

It must of had a low shipment, the Amazon ps4 version is backordered for quite sometime. My local Walmart and Best Buy had zero copies and I got the last one at Target. Xbox One version
