DiRT 4 Review Thread

It must of had a low shipment, the Amazon ps4 version is backordered for quite sometime. My local Walmart and Best Buy had zero copies and I got the last one at Target. Xbox One version

Yeah I preordered back in April and my copy isn't supposed to ship until tonight and be delivered Thursday.

I'll be skipping this even thought DiRT Rally was my GOTY of '15. I really want to see a graphics re-haul / new engine. Dirt Rally looked decent enough, but just doesn't hold a candle to Driveclub, Horizon 3, etc. Doesn't look like a 2017 game.
You should not skip it IMO. I'd like Codemaster to make more rally games. :|
They need all the sales they can get. Also, they now own Evolution Studios and they're working on a new game so they'll provide your fix of great looking racing game in the future .

Game's good and handling is great. I get why people are saying it's like a Horizon to a main line forza but this game isn't very arcadey at all. It's really fun, I'm enjoying it a lot.

One thing Dirt games always remind me of is how much I wish all racing games were menu based track selection and that I'm so fucking sick of open world racing games. It's refreshing to just jump in to a level and start racing without any of the nonsense found in open world games like in Horizon where I'm always trying to figure out where the fuck I'm at (both on the map and progression wise) or how to get in to the next race and waste a ton of time traveling when I just want to fucking race!

Please some developer out there answer my call for a good street racer without an open world... that's actually good of course.

Amen. So sick of open world racers but if thats all they put out I still buy them.

It might be because they themselves have drawn the comparisons. Only fans treat it as meaning that simulation mode can't be extreme.

Since there's no OT, I'm going to ask my question here. I just bought a car and started a team but every event I go into in career mode has me racing for other teams and not mine. What's the deal?

Look in the lower corner of any tile that is a choice for a race type and it will show if you have a car in your garage that matches the requirement. You have to have one.

I really, really enjoyed Dirt Rally so I guess I'll be picking this one up in the near future. Such a great rally game, hope this one is just as good.

So the handling in this (sim mode) feels quite a bit different from dirt rally. At first I really didn't like it, but I think that was primarily due to a poor first impression of racing with a fwd car and expecting a carbon copy of rally' s model. After sinking in a couple hours last night I've adjusted and really, really like it. The car feels like it carries more momentum on different surfaces and you can really feel weight and weight transfers. Braking especially feels different, you gotta be really careful braking hard. It all feels very natural and realistic to me. I'm not great at direct comparisons between the old and new though. My buddy isn't at all convinced and has been disappointed so far claiming handling is a massive downgrade ("the cars I have tried all feel too stiff and flat, the steering is too snappy and corrects itself too easily, and I don't at all feel the road surfaces"). I plan to race a bit more than fire up dirt rally to get better thoughts on the matter. But again, taken on its own at the very least, I like how it drives!

I also love the race feel additions. Car problems creep in fairly commonly, with co-drivers commenting ("that sounded like a mis fire, better check in with the crew between races"), more in depth team building and management, wild life and drone surprises, big crowds, stalled cars on the stage, stopping at the marshall, and ebrake starts add quite a bit to the dirt rally formula.

My opinions on make your own track are a bit mixed. First, it is awesome that you can't just memorize a track layout any more, forcing you to actually listen to your co driver and limiting how hard you really want to push the car. Buuuut the tracks don't seem to have the same flow as the purpose built ones from rally. And, my biggest issue, the co driver calls seem to struggle at times with pacing. There's already been several instances of calls coming waaaaay too late causing me to crash. There's also points where the opposite is true and the calls come to frequent and stack up to the point where I end up losing track of them. Both of these were almost non-existent in dirt rally after dialing in the call out pacing in the options and while doing the same here improves it, it's still an issue.

A 60FPS game doesn't look like a 30FPS one.

Wow.

GOTY 2015, skipping on the followup. Logic!

Got my Fanatec CSR to work with this using a CronusMax. Only played the tutorial level, but it already seems to work better than native CSR support in older titles. It's disgusting that Sony starting blocking the wheel, but at least this workaround seems to be quick and easy.

Played the game for 2 hours and enjoy it a lot! Rally was sometimes a bit too hard for me, but this is a great compromise! Somehow feels better ( for me personally ) than the rally controls and 60fps is bliss! The only thing I miss is Greece. I loved that location.

In my opinion, the game deserves more credit. If you've enjoyed Rally I don't see why anyone would ignore this.

Picking this up today and will play the gamer mode. I liked Dirt Rally but man it was difficult and I needed to be super focused to play it. Will be nice to be able to relax a bit and rally without having to worry about destroying my vehicle.

Wow, driving in the fog is brutal.

I really like the game as well, coming from Dirt Rally (which I also loved).

The sim driving model is different, but it still feels fantastic... much better than any other rally games or previous entries in the Dirt franchise.

I'm actually starting to think the driving model is better than Rally's... I'd like to think that they took all they learned from making Rally's excellent model and improved it.

Im halfway through the rally career content and I already can see this is a pretty thin offering. If the other disciplines weren't so utterly pointless and boring I might feel different, but this game feels more and more like a budget release. And visually it's, um, a blurry mess, cars look ok though, just not the narrow path through the woods whose intricate detail is vital to decipher, yeah, get it on PC if you can, might clear things up a bit.

I got it for $40, that seems a fair price for what is on offer here.

So why are all of the console people getting D4 for $40 when us PC players will have to pay $60? That's not sitting well with me at all...

I'm interested due to the severe lack of racing games this generation if you're not on Xbox.

Is it worth full price for a newcomer to the series or should I wait?

Best wishes.

Does this have a VR mode?
No but maybe some day.

Asked during a recent live stream from Codemasters HQ, Chief Game Designer Paul Coleman stated that “no decision has been made,” but didn’t rule out the possibility of a VR update arriving at a later date. At the game’s announcement in January, Codemasters responded to a Road to VR enquiry about VR support, saying “we will monitor how DiRT Rally performs on PSVR and then make decisions from there”.

I'm still on the fence. I really want to read more impressions. Graphically I was expecting more, and that track generator thing isn't the more exciting feature as far as I read.

Edit: Well I just read the bomba thread... I think a lot of people think the same

Sooo I won a free copy of this from a Deep Silver stream yesterday. I'm not much of a racing game fan but I've really liked a few over the years. Looking forward to checking it out!

Get it on CD Keys for $36, its been that price for a long time there.

Huh, I'd buy it day one at that price. Even if I end up liking it less than DiRT Rally I'm sure I'd still get $36 worth out of it.

Never dealt with Cd Keys though, are they reputable for PC Steam keys?

Cd keys are fine for pc download games. I ordered Tekken 7 and other games through there. They will send you a download link in an email to the game code and you just activate it on the relevant platform.

I have also pre-ordered Dirt4 from them, I checked earlier and they haven't sent out the codes early, they will probably send them out late Thursday evening.

I've never had any issues and they even offered me a full refund once because i changed my mind as long as you dont use the activation key. I bought about 4 games so far and each had Steam keys, no problems. Origin works as well, bought Mass Effect through them.

kinda shocked at the lack of attention this game gets here...Care to explain Gaf?

Seriously. I'm guessing many on consoles are passing because dirt rally really isnt all that old and pc gamers don't have it yet?

Dirt Rally feels like it just came out yesterday on the consoles, and I had no idea that Dirt 4 was going to come out so soon after being announced.

Loved Rally but didn't know this game was coming out so soon until this week.

Time has moved fast, Rally launched 14 months ago on console. Almost an entire year prior on PC. Although the VR expansion breathed a bit of new life into the port more recently, but the reality is that it has been a decent while.

Also, the length of time PC players had access to Rally before consoles helped raise awareness when it finally was ported. Forums were a buzz with praise and curiosity to the port quality.

Dirt 4 is just an unknown that was quiet leading up to its near stealth launch. Not sure how that happened, but here we are.

It was $40 on Amazon on launch day, they even sent me the pre-order version

I was going to wait for a price drop, didn't have to wait long

Sweet. I had BB price match Amazon at $39.99, they tacked on GCU knocking it down to $32 (didn't think they would) and I used some credit I had. Paid $12. I'll get my money out of this game!

Meanwhile in Germany, still 70€ for PS4 :(

Remarkably, I also just noticed it's 10€ less for Xbox One. Is this common? I feel even more gauged as a PS4 owner now.

I think I'm going to wait a bit. Can't justifiy 70€ for this game right now.
