Do you guys think there will be a Switch shortage?

CEWKlMN.jpg

I wonder how many Switches she bought.

No, not at all. Sony sold 1 million in NA on launch day in Nov 2013. It hit 2 million after one month, in Dec. PS4 didn't launch in other regions until later, EU about a month later and JPN in Feb 2014.

Nintendo isn't shorting by launching with 2 million units.

The only arguable point is how much/often they ship stock to stores after that.

14 days between NA and EU

2.1m in 16 days (December 1st, a few days after the EU launch) http://www.sie.com/en/corporate/release/2013/131203b.html

4.2m in 43 days (December 28th, a month after EU launch) http://www.sie.com/en/corporate/release/2014/140108a.html

Also people trend to forget, the launch had an AC game, cod, battlefield, FIFA, Madden.

I don't think there will be so much demand that it's difficult to meet, even as shipments increase, as was the case for Wii.

I'm not sure I expect Nintendo to ship enough units to keep up with demand at launch though.

Definitely at launch. I could see it being hard to find after that if Zelda ends up being incredible and it looks like it might. With Wii U being discontinued the Switch is going to be most consumers ticket to play that game.

Speaking of scalpers.

Among the people who I know who preorder the switch. Scalper units out number the keep ones 3 to 1.

Missed the initial pre-order batch at Amazon.de, how fucked am I?

As a PC enthusiast, I don't wanna miss out on what shapes to be the ultimate portable/hybrid gaming console :/ Getting tired of multi plat games, I need Mario, Zelda and Xenoblade in my life.

Help

I feel like if you live in a populated area, you will be able to track one down on launch day without a pre order or waiting in line. Not sure how long that lasts though.

While the demand for the Wii was insane, you could get both the GameCube and the Wii U on launch day without too much trouble. I think the most important factor here will be how many they actually make. I believe it will be less than the amount of Wii Us, but we are also in March and not Christmas season.

Initially, yes. At least in the US. Not sure if we here in Yurop really care enough about Nintendo to make it sell out all over the place, but it's definitely possible.

I haven't seen a Wii U on store shelves since late November. Same for the 3DS. Nintendo has already stated 2 million for the Switch launch, and pre-orders are running out fast. Nintendo knows the scarcity game well, if you don't get a Switch launch day, your going to be hunting for a while I'm guessing.

This was sold out all of yesterday lol. Probably flux of allotments.

No its likely due to what I said in my previous post. Stores that didn't sell through yesterday had their allotments cut to whatever they had already done and the rest of the reserves were given to other stores that had already sold through and the rest they put online.

I assume it will sell like wiiu where it started decently and fell off a cliff.

I think switch will follow the same path as wiiu.

At least as far as Wii U, there's no reason for Nintendo to keep manufacturing a system that wasn't selling. In fact they recalled them from stores, likely to reserve a stock for repairs in the future.

At least as far as Wii U goes, that's not a good support in arguing for artificial scarcity.

I think Nintendo is going to undership this thing until the holidays. (When they will hopefully be smart enough to bundle 1 2 Switch)

Of course it could be a stillborn launch like the 3DS. That would throw all my speculation out the window!

Yes, but probably not due to demand, but rather supply. I'd love to be wrong however.
Thats how shortages happen though, demand outpacing the supply, regardless of the amount :P I know what you mean though, that the demand wont be sky high and that Nintendo might not ship enough to even meet a smaller amount of demand.

Order from one of these:
saturn
mediamarkt

EDIT:
bĂĽcher.de
Computeruniverse.net

You can also ask at a local gaming store (those smaller ones) as they usually have stock after the big ones sell out

Best part about this pic is that they didn't sell a single one of those Wii Us and ended up having to bring them all back. lol

Which is why sales figures for the Wii U on the second and third month were terrible due to all the returns lol
I wonder if something similar will happen with the Switch (probably not, seems to have a very small allocation for launch)

you are fucked if you wanted the one with the grey joycons.

Legitimate shortage? No way.
Fabricated shortage? Hell yes.
Nah man

My local Gamestop was getting a decent amount of switches. Like about the same as the 360s which is the last one I remember pre-ordering in Gamestop.

I think they've made enough for a decent launch and there will still be some shortages.

I bought a Wii U at launch, fearing this. A GameCube at launch, fearing this. A DS at launch, fearing this. A 3DS at launch, fearing this. Fears were only ever founded with the Wii.

Yup

All the people saying "dur it's a nantando consol" are being berks.

Nintendo is terrible with supply and artificially or not has a rep for poor stocks when people want stuff the most. I want a Switch. I wanted an NES classic too. After months of no supply anywhere, I really don't want one anymore.

I hope not, as much as I think it won't sell well (The Syetem), I want zelda, I am willing for spend 400 for zelda, might regret it but whatever, can't take money to the grave.

How is that artificial? I still havenÂ’t got one many months later. They made fewer than the demand, thatÂ’s how you get shortages in the first place.

It's the fact that Nintendo items are constantly out of stock. No other gaming company has had this many issues keeping items on shelves.

Will be impossible to find until June, when a short supply reappears and is then gone, will be impossible to find all throughout the holiday season.

Wii 2

I just preordered the gray switch from GameStop online a few mins ago. They had the neons available for preorder too. Didn't preorder any games. Hoping I can find those locally. So looks like you can still preorder from certain sites.

I only bought one to turn a profit on.
Not interested in anything they have until Mario. Even then, just Mario isn't enough. Likely a 2019 purchase for me.

Nintendo are a very conservative company, and many retailers have been burned with excessive Nintendo stock so they donÂ’t order much either.

You've been going around threads bragging about your scalping swag. That's not going to win you any goodwill here.

People using sold out pre-orders as evidence that Switch will be impossible to find at launch should be reminded that Wii U pre-orders were sold out long before its release and I manged to pick one up two days after it hit stores. And I never saw a shortage of the console after that.

So, while Switch may end up being hard to get in March, pre-orders are really no evidence of this. It's all going to come down to how prepared Nintendo is for restocks.

To be fair, the Wii U did not have a worldwide launch on the same day. I would not expect it to be easy to snag one at launch.

At launch, yes. But that is not exactly a barometer for sucess, especially considering Nintendo's historic in regards to undershiping.

Other than the NES classic, which is more of an appliance, when has Nintendo undershipped a major console?

The Wii was actually something that broke Nintendo's expectations and they kept making them as fast they could.

Gotta remember that they were burned with Gamecube's selling at 99 and those were rotting in retail for years.
