I can see why bronies got hate in 2010 and 2011 when it was popular to post pony reaction images to literally everything, but it's been over four years now and it still soils peoples' opinion on MLP fans. And even if the reaction images don't garner hate as much as it used to, the extreme fans of the show who use the show as their entire identity helps spread the idea that all fans are like that when it isn't true, at least in my experience. My brother and I watch new episodes on Saturday mornings, it's fun to take in a show that has zero cynicism and enjoy the goofy cartoon for what it is, a cartoon. Do we 'ship' ponies and make OCs and fanfiction and art? No. We just laugh at the jokes and enjoy the characters.
Do some fans take it to extreme levels? Yes, every fandom has this. Why is this such a horrible thing to people, it's to be expected at some point. Most fans are secretive about it because it has such a negative reputation in the first place. It's similar growing pains that Star Wars and Star Trek fans had until the series became more mainstream and "cool" to watch.
