Do you have any "Bronie" friends?

I had a "Bronie" friend, though I am not sure how deep he went or if he still is a bronie. Had, in this case, is his switch to focusing on law school, as it appeared he was giving up his past interests to focus on his future. This could have signified his change in "Bronie" status, so it's not a change in friendship in this case.
 
There was some guy who I hung out with occasionally in high school who got way into the subculture in college and all his Facebook pictures are him in pony shirts and/or wearing a fedora. To each their own, but yeesh.
 
My GF loves all things MLP and has been ecstatic that series four has been so successful, means she has more to collect and buy (we are both in our 30s and no kids).

I have watched the majority of the series and find the cartoon just fine, with some really standout episodes and some boring fare that I don't care for. I don't like it as much as ongoing series like Steven Universe or Gravity Falls, but feel that it's definitely a step above almost everything else, particularly since it's aimed at young girls. Doesn't try to gross you out with the main characters obsessing over dating or makeup or w/e that would turn me away otherwise, so i enjoy being able to watch it with her. They cast magic, go on adventures to whatever, compete in sporting events, save the world sometimes, ect.

In reminds me a lot of the Powerpuff Girls back in the 90s, which was also very clearly aimed at girls yet was perfectly fun for anyone who enjoyed watching cartoons. I don't consider myself a Brony since outside of watching the show (and being a fan of Weird Al and certain other guest stars) I don't really have much else to do with the franchise.

Certain super creepy fanbase people aside (wtf at Cloppers???) I think the hatred is completely unwarranted and a textbook case of nerd on nerd shaming, which is the epitome of pathetic behavior. The vast majority of the base seems to be incredibly harmless or keep to themselves or both.

Edit: And I didn't actually answer the question! Bronies have to be male, right? Then I don't know any personally. What is the female term? My gf is almost certainly one.
 
I try to stay as far away from that space as possible.
 
Not that I'm aware of, but I don't give a shit what people like or do in their free time so even if they were, I wouldn't care.
 
No, but that's mostly by chance. I don't have too many nerdy friends, and the ones that are tend to be more into more "mature" stuff.

Being in grad school i'm mostly surrounded by either hipsters, bros (or w/e the woman equivalent to that is), or casual-nerds in the day-to-day.
 
I've watched the show before and it's pretty good. It's pretty ridiculous how many people hate on bronies. It's really no different than Adventure Time or Pokémon.

There's an important difference between bronies and Sonic fans or anime fans, though. Bronies have better taste in entertainment.
 
The show is pretty decent, and seems to be pretty awesome for friends of mine who have kids since they can watch it with them without wanting to shoot themselves. The extreme parts of fan-culture as a whole are pretty scary though.
 
I have a friend who used to be an insufferable brony, but has thankfully since become a casual fan that rarely brings it up.

I guess I am, though my involvement with the fandom is pretty much at a zero these days. I watch the newest episodes and leave it at that.

The "SHINY" factor wore off around season 3, and I feel like the community as a whole became a lot less vocal. Now it's just a cartoon I like to watch.

I have two young daughters who are pretty obsessed with it, so I've seen most of the show, and enjoyed it. It's entertaining and the music is good. Basically for a little kids' show, you could do a whole lot worse.

How does that not make sense?

It's possible to not have anything against a group of people but still not want to be friends with them
 
I have a friend that is a closet bronie. Once I saw him he had a MLP keychain in his backpack and when I mentioned it he panicked, and this is rare because he is usually the quiet, reserved, unfazed type.

People who watch those other shows don't tend to build a personal identity around them.
 
I watch the show, pretty good characters and adorable stories, not to mention the DBZ parody at the end of season 4.

I don't think I'm part of that fandom, a few people I know from there are really obnoxious and the conventions are unbearable, then again, many anime card game and video game fans I know are also whiny manchildren.

However!

My close friends also watch the show, we like to discuss mlp, adventure time, Steven universe, Gravity falls, Star Wars Rebels and Regular Show, and recently We bear bears. We call it, cartoon time lol

But we distance ourselves from the toxic side of the fandoms

I must say, the show really has its merits, a nice message, really memorable moments and songs and you should give at shot if you like self aware cartoons.


Judging the show or the people who watch it
Makes you no better than the people judging games and gamers because of gamergate.
 
I have a few brony acquaintances. They're pretty cool. I've met some of their friends, though, and it's quite obvious they make their life revolve around MLP. It's all about moderation.
 
I know many people who enjoy the show for what it is. I don't associate myself with people who take their enjoyment of it to obsession levels.
 
LIke go to cons and dress up , no. I know a dude who thinks the show is ok, thats about where I am at. He is like into it though, he's graduated and just got a job. So, ey can't say he's wasting his life.
 
My little cousin is. It's a bit odd, and I'll probably need to have a few words if he hasn't dialed it back in ten years or so, but his parents are mortified, and I just don't get the hate. I've seen a fair chunk of the show. Some of it is really good! Like, oldschool loony tunes good! That's about the highest praise I can give any kids show, and if he manages to find some social expression through it, that's probably for the best too.

I have some other thoughts about the adult fanbase that I won't voice here, except to say I'd be very interested in an anthropological study of them, furries, goreans, and other cultural backwaters.
 
I have friends that enjoy MLP, but they're female so it doesn't carry the same stigma I guess. One of them actually makes bank selling MLP fan art at conventions (and no, it's nothing perverted). I've watched a few episodes, and joined them on some silly group cosplays for the hell of it, but I can't say I'm really a fan. I was never into the original show either, which most of them were.

I've got nothing against fans of the show, so long as they aren't obsessive weird about it.
