Do you have any "Bronie" friends?

I've never even seen a Bronie that I know of, unless you count Youtube.

Am I missing something or is that an Ann Coulter insult?

Got a friend who's really into it. Even bought an MLP/Fallout crossover book.

He already went to a bronycon this year. Some of my other friends give him grief, but it's whatever for me. I still watch OG powerpuff girls.

I see them a lot walking about but I don't know any myself.

I have a Doctor Hooves shirt myself but I don't wear it in fear of attracting the wrong kind of attention.

No friends I know like the show, watched a few episodes along time ago to see what all the hub bub was all about. Really decent show compared to the absolute shit that's spewed out for kids of that age, I would be happy if my child liked MLP over other kids show, however at the same time I would be extremely worried about them going on the internet for anything MPL related.

Nah, I don't keep company with pedophiles.

But for real though, while my more nerdy friends are into all sorts of weird shit (Steven Universe, anime, k-pop) somehow nobody I know in real life ever really got into MLP for some reason. A guy I used to play DotA 2 with was super into it.

Fink.

Should wear it! Who cares what people think? I have a doc hooves as well. :D

Oh hey, the thread didn't fall into ruin while I was away!

I notice a lot of people saying they watch the show, yet I don't recall seeing many around the official thread. The season resumes on September 12, so make sure to post then! Plus, the first half of season 5 is already on Netflix.

I'm glad my girls watch it (age 9/7). I can't say I'm a fan, but it's watchable/amusing in ways other shows they like aren't. Winx club, Barbie princess crap, American girl movies, etc.

Seriously watch an episode of Monster High or Winx club and then watch the ponies.
Show is pretty decent. I'll take the ponies any day. I can see why it has some boy fandom because it is a pretty decent watch. Better than some stuff I watched as a kid (He-man, Ninja Turtles, Ronin Warriors). Just a bit girl-focused.

Btw:John Delancie as the chaos dragon Discord is awesome. Q makes a great chaos dragon.

Have you actually watched Barbie, life in the dream house? I actually found it pretty funny.

I have a good friend who's a bronie. I once went to a birthday party of his, where I met a whole bunch of his friends who were all bronies. One dude even kept a whole binder filled with pony drawings. Some of them were really weird.

One of my friends has (had?) a Rainbow Dash wallet but that was about it. I feel like a lot of the obsessive appeal comes from the stigma to be honest. I watched a few episodes to see what all the fuss was about and it's pretty good.

I have less objection to people who get their sexual kicks from the show than people who believe it is a good show.

People who actually watch it because they enjoy the story/jokes/characters are delusional.

I remember when I asked my DotA buddy why he watched it he said that the writing was good and that there was lots of stuff thrown in for adults. That argument never made sense to me, because you know what else is well written and designed to appeal to adults? Tons of shows that aren't cartoons for kids.

I have noticed on Tumblr and here on GAF that the people who watch MLP typically only watch other children's shows like Adventure Time, Regular Show, Gravity Falls, Avatar, Korra, Steven Universe etc. I'm not a psychologist or anything, but I imagine being emotionally or developmentally stunted has something to do with it.

What the hell is wrong with bolded being watched by an adult?

I mean, nothing I guess. But if literally all the media you consume is written and targeted for 8-14 year olds, it has to be indicative of something.

What is the basis of your agument that that is all they watch? Wouldn't it make sense for people who like MLP to like other cartoons and for them talk about said other cartoons in the same space?

That's a really broad stroke you're painting there. I do agree that if you base your personality/lifestyle on one particular thing (MLP in this case) then yeah that's a problem. However, having an enjoyment on watching cartoons aimed for kids doesn't equate to one being emotionally stunted; animation, comedy, writing, etc. are aspects that can be enjoyed by all. Not everyone seeks and/or likes anime which a good portion are considered "cartoons for adults" that doesn't rely on comedy.

I google imaged "Adventure Time" and then just laughed.

It's a funny show, fo realz.

Yup, I post in a lot of cartoon threads. That's all I watch.

I didn't just do a binge watch of Babylon 5 or anything...

Regular Show and Adventure Time are quite clearly not written and targeted at 8-14 year olds. They're written and targeted at 20 something stoners. It just happens that 8-14 year olds like some of that shit too.

I was of the mind that people hate on Bronies because they treat the show like some kind of religion. They seemed to argue they were the new era of Manhood and it turned a lot of people off to it.

I know a lot of pony fans. I don't know anyone like this. I do know you can make any group look crazy by looking at the worst members.

Eh, making fun of people and looking down on them based on their interests is pretty fun. What kind of losers are in to cartoons, mirite? ;)

Well I'm a fan of the show, and out of all of my friends I can only say for sure that two of them aren't bronies. I like them a lot, and we hang out together every weekend. I've also met plenty of other bronies through them in real-life too, and so far only one of them has actually managed to rub me the wrong way, but that was only because of political differences.

That's no a very nice thing to say since I've watched the majority of the series and in fact do like the characters and the story (usually). You don't have to like it, but being insulting to people you don't know is really uncalled for. It's no Steven Universe but it's definitively not trash. i actually can't think of any other cartoons targeted at young girls that i could stand to watch, let alone enjoy. I really appreciate when show creators make cartoons like these enjoyable for a large demograph of people.

Is that a shirt of the monster thing that is voiced by Q? I'd wear this hell out of that shirt with no regrets, I love Star Trek NG.

The female term is Pegasister.

I have never heard this term before. Thanks!

A good chunk of that is absolutely not targeted at 8-14 year olds (especially not Regular Show).

When it comes to T.V. I generally watch cartoons over anything else (barring exceptions like Star Trek, TWD and GoT) and I feel like that doesn't make me a bad person, cause I don't base my life around them. Unhealthy obsessions are bad, but you shouldn't assume that preferences for certain things is by itself a "problem".

come on you guys it's brony singular, bronies plural

"bronie" is just some weird grammatical abomination

smh

Came in to say this. I really have no idea why people stick with that spelling. It's baffling

One of the differences being many people grew up on Disney films. Unless the majority of bronies watched the original or w/e. I just don't understand how any of this could be appealing to someone older than 12. But, if you somehow get enjoyment out of it, by all means do so.

Yeah, that's the thing. It's this trained mentality that a lot of people have trouble letting go of. With Disney movies, it's always been for kids and adults. It's just the natural order of things. The original MLP was known to be quite saccharine and vapid. It was meant to solely target girls and to sell toys. Because of that it became part of the "natural order" to associate MLP with the "girliest of the girly crap". And along comes Faust who wants to make it a show for everyone to watch and it's throwing people off. A lot of this negativity I've seen is mostly "But. Dotdotdot. You're not SUPPOSED to enjoy it. It's a girl's show, that's how it's always been."

I mean we got a lot of people, even in this thread, who act like they're going to catch cooties just for seeing this thread. And I guarantee, if the show was relatively the same but DIDN'T have the MLP name attached, it wouldn't have nearly as much attention. It would get a following for its creative pedigree and quality, but a lot of that "ironic following" is simply because it's a show that changes the order of things. People hate change yada yada. I think people say "Oh, they're pedophiles" or "It's CLEARLY a sexual fetish" is the only way they can wrap the heads around it.

As for me, no, really haven't come across any Bronies irl.

A few of my friends are bronies. I didn't even meet them through the show or anything. One of them is the older brother of a dude I've known since I was like 6 and his friend, and the other was one of my roommates last year.

For this reason I'm personally conflicted on the fanbase, I've seen them be horrible online but I've had good experiences with every brony I've met in real life so idk.

Try to Sit through an episode of Monster High or Ruby Gloom with your seven-year old sometime. You'll be begging for MLP before the first commercial break.

Only time I ever seen a brony was last years when I took my daughter to the second Equestria Girls movie. Ears and tails everywhere. Numerous serious discussions of which pony was "best pony*", and when the movie actuall started there was a dude my age sitting on the opposite side of me yelling "No FlashLight!*" every time Twilight and Flash Sentry were on screen at the same time. It was obnoxious.
