Do you judge people based on their avatars?

No. Unless I find the Avatar offensive or related to something I find offensive. So, rarely if ever. I care more about what's being said in the post.

Also :lol at the people literally not reading posts by people with anime avatars. Seems kinda childish to me. I bet those people are skipping my post, even though my avatar is really a VG character.

I know I shouldn't, but some avatars just make me hate the poster without even knowing anything about them.

This avatar:
346un21.png
, as an example. I don't know anything about the poster and for all I know he/she is a good, decent human being. But it hurts my eyes a bit when I focus on it and kind of pisses me off. It's just a fucking picture, but any time I see them posting I'm automatically predisposed to read whatever they post in a negative light.
That was EXACTLY what I was gonna post! :O

I don't do this allot but shit like that makes me go >:(

It's never based on JUST their avatar or their tag, but definitely alongside the content of the post, the username+tag+avatar plays a part.

PantherLotus's tag and up-herself dancing Japanese chick infuriates me for some reason. One of the reasons I try to not care about politics any more.

SMH

Usually I start to hate the avatar if I don't like their posts or they're obnoxious. Only in extreme cases do I judge based on an avatar (you, Atlas Shrugged guy).

The OP's example has one of the few avatars where I end up prejudging the poster.

Obviously in that case, it clearly marks him as a republican jackass, and if he's not, then it nonetheless clearly marks him as one, irrespective of its accuracy.

Only the ones that are too big.

Literally a handful of mine were from anime (about 3/570) except for the 6 or so I just made when I realized I could hook up my dvd player to my capture card and grab some from my Gun Smith Cats/other dvds.

Only Astrolad.

For some reason his avatar annoys the hell out of me and I have NO idea why. :lol

Oh and I guess Wii's avatar as well. I just picture him :lol 'ing at every post he makes.

As has been iterated by others I tend to associate the images with posters. So if I read something in a thread that I found distasteful it will be associated with that avatar.

In regards to the anime thing I don't dislike it by any means, but they tend to seem uninspired/generic and are so very easily forgotten. Every time I say "it would be awesome to make a cool NGE avatar" 5 minutes later I realize it isnt awesome. So judgments passed? Yes, but in a broad sense of "oh Im not going to remember this poster based on his/her avatar"

I generally don't in OT but over on gaming side I tend to ignore people with Console X Exclusive avatars posting shit about Console Y. I definitely find myself drawn to certain cool avatars though, Coolio, Jaypah, ViciousKillerSquirrel and Chinner all spring to mind.

Well i identify people primarily by their avatar, so when i'm scrolling down a page and see the avatar of a poster i like or a poster i'm not so fond of, i'm going to react differently. As for snap judgments, i will make little judgments based off them, sure, it is hard not to sometimes, but the vast majority is in the actual text.

Seriously.
Anime avatars aren't that bad.

I HATE people with Lost avatars.
Oh shit-

I just hope people don't think I'm a woman beater or something due to my comical avatar.

I have judged you based upon your avatar. I have found that you are awesome.

"Miss O'Neil, I deliver you a message"

"Oh ok, cool. Is it in your hand there?"

*SMACK!

:lol

The Alison Brie avatars make me never want to watch Community.
On the contrary, after seeing so many of those avatars I finally found out the name of the show, watched some episodes online, and will now watch the show on TV every week. :D

Avatars heavily influence my opinion of posters.

Anime, particularly the ones with dudes who look like chicks or appear to be six years old get immediately spacebar'd.

A poster with Master Chief or Nathan Drake avatars passionately defending some aspect of 360/PS3 make me dismiss what they have to say as fanboy nonsense even if what they say would make sense otherwise.

I also tend to read posts in the voices of the avatars, the guy with the Chris Griffin av drove me crazy.

I tend to remember most people by their avatars.

I probably need to change mine though, since I have trouble locating myself on pages.

Anime avatars just make me wish I watched more anime.

The ones that feature or refer to genuinely objectionable people (Ayn Rand, Donald Trump) make me think much less of the poster. Irretrievably so.

Yes. All the time. Sometimes a face has a particular expression that makes me want to punch it, but I especially can't take anyone with the following avatar issues seriously:

Avatar memes, especially those for games that came out a year or two ago - Why do I still see so many Killzone eyes, MGS4 eyepatches and mustaches, and GTA4 avatars? The GTA4 ones are especially bad, because they fall under the next category.

Shitty or distracting animations - Some movement isn't inherently bad, but most people seem to really suck at implementing it. Too much movement is distracting. An abrupt loop point is distracting. Flashing colors are distracting. An excessively slow framerate is distracting. I mean holy shit, use some fucking judgment.

Avatars that aren't 90 pixels wide - GAF's scaling algorithm for images larger or smaller than 90 pixels wide is absolutely horrible. It takes like ten seconds to scale it to the right size. It's not hard. Why would you settle for a blurry or pixelated mess when you could scale it properly and have it look nice?

Maybe I'm more judgmental than I should be, but a lot of people seem to just really not give a shit about what their avatar looks like. :(

...the dolphin is winning.

Anime avatars - I know it's been said, but I just assume they're unemployable and jerking off to the rythmic beat of the sailor moon theme.

People must think i'm a bum.

Personaly i don't care too much for avatars. Ther's only two types of users that i find harder to take serious based on their avatars:

Anime avatars: tells me subconsciously that you are still infantile even if you are a grown up man.

and

Guys with hot chicks as their avatar, even worse if it's their girlfriend: tells me subconsciously that you are a douchebag (the Alison Brie avatars i don't count because i know what its about)

Not really. I mostly go for the content of the posts. Though, some avatars do stand out quite a bit, and not always in a good way.

Good lord, I don't quite understand this animosity that being shown to people who like Anime,Manga, Comic or some other shit.. I personally don't pay much attention to people's avatars except when I read their post and find myself agreeing/disagreeing with 'em one way or another. Who gives a toss where their avatars manifest from.

Not really.

It feels stupid to ignore one's opinion just because they have a avatar, which doesn't suit your tastes.

Oh, and sports avatars have never had anything interesting or useful to say in the history of the internet. They also all look identical. I honestly cannot distinguish between users with sports avatars. They all just kinda blend together into three groups to me: guy with helmet, guy with basketball, and guy with bat or glove.

:lol :lol :lol

I don't mind them but they do all blend together.

I dont judge people on their avatars and I dont think people should worry about what other people think about their avatars because a person is more than a 90 X 120 image so fuck em

The guy with the enlarge :lol I never initially think he's being serious. I always read what he posts like its a joke! I get disappointed every time!! :(

I hate the basketball avatar meme of that one dude wearing different jerseys. I don't know why.

Not really.

As a side note, is it just me or did GAF just change the default font-family in the base CSS? Some of the text looks bigger to me for some reason...normally the first line in my tag only stays one line. Now it's two lines.

Science tells us it's the only reliable way to judge other posters.

Real answer: Not really. I sometime make strong associations between users' names, avatars and post content, though. Not judgments, let me stress. Associations.
