Does GTA V have to worry about Sleeping Dogs?

GTA IV is one of the only games released 4 years ago that is still at or near the top 10 on the Xbox Live charts. If that's not proof that a good chunk of fans (still) liked it, then I don't know what is.

No people keep on playing it to show people how bad it actually is, right??.......right? lol.

Must be Xbox Live exclusive.

PS3 has no stats like this, but explain me this:

after 4 years, Wanted trophy is still at a super low 3.04%.

You say that so many people like it that much and also play it all the time. So why is it that this trophy is that rare. You just need to play multiplayer in some sort of way (except free roam) and then you will get it sooner or later. Definitely within 4 years, even if it's played just a bit every now and then.

Hell, Fly the Coop has a higher rate (around 4%) and that's really hard to get.

Oh wait, I just researched a bit - achievement-wise it seems to be even worse. It's around 1% only.

Maybe there are a few GTA-nuts in those tiny percentages that really enjoy it all the time and play it every day. Just like there are people that play Counterstrike every day for years and years. But those are not the majority of players.

If I remember the XBL stats aren't necessarily "multiplayer". SP games are in there too like XBL games.

So MP stats and trophies mean shit.

Rockstar needs to worry about GTA5 not controlling like putrid ass.
I don't know what you're talking about.

Euphoria was awesome, actually. Of course it was also responsible for Niko having the turning radius of a small truck, but oh well.

Thanks for literally making me fail-at-stifling-my-giggles like some school girl at work.

Someone post the gif of Niko on a bike flipping backwards off a telephone pole. With the cop pointing his gun at him for like a half second before he's like "fuck it" and drops the gun and just keeps walking lmao.

He's an uninformed gamer who can't come to conclusions about the quality of a game on his own and relies on branding to do it for him.

Call of Duty-syndrome.

I agree with this post.

A new GTA release is an event, like Halo or CoD. The game doesn't even need to be the best of the genre yet it'll sell millions easily.

Those franchises were all built from the ground up through initial quality to get where they were.

Grand Theft Auto III is one of the most influential video game releases of all time, Halo is almost entirely responsible for the popularity of the console FPS (along with Goldeneye), and Call of Duty 1 and 2 were regarded as the pinnacle of WWII shooters in the mid-2000's. CoD2 was regarded as the best Xbox 360 launch title, at the time.

i don't think anyone's going to be commending Sleeping Dogs for moving the genre forward

That's good for you.

I'm commending it.

That's what I'm saying aside from CoD where I think 4 was more responsible for where it's at now. GTA3, Halo, and CoD4 were all "holy shit, you guys have to play this game" when they launched. Haven't really heard that kind of reaction from average folks about Sleeping Dogs, even if it may be superior to GTA now.

I'll disagree with this one million times over. Interesting stories that haven't been done a million times over (Sleeping Dogs obviously draws influence from movie classics like Hard Boiled, but name me another couple of games where you play as an undercover cop in Hong Kong) are hard to come by, and well-written, likable characters like Wei Shen are even rarer. And that's in video gaming as a whole, not even just the "open-world" genre.

I've been out of the "new game series coming soon" loop for a long time, so thank you for this thread. Caused me to check out Sleeping Dogs (reviews, trailers, gameplay videos) and I went ahead and bought it online for download. ($45 on Amazon downloads, GMG wouldn't accept my credit card for their $36 price (after coupon))

Looks amazing so far.

Also, new IP's are rarely "an event" because they are unproven. Watch the fanfare that will follow Sleeping Dogs 2 (if they do it).

I'm pretty sure GTA3 wasn't "OMG this game is going to be amazing", but ended up that way due to quality. That caused Vice City (and beyond) to be "OMG this game is going to be amazing".

Already said earlier we finally we got a competent fighting and shooting sandbox game in Sleeping Dogs. While the Saint Rows games are fun they still lack in that area, GTA games even more so. Sleeping Dogs raise the bar in those two areas. Hopefully other sandbox games will try to match up to Sleeping Dogs.

what are your thoughts? Has sleeping dogs stepped up the game in any way that rockstar will be 2nd fiddle with GTA V?

Good god, no. Sleeping Dogs has the worst camera and driving in any open world game ever made. And every GTA has had a better story than Sleeping Dogs.

I never played True Crime, but apparently Sleeping Dogs is a reworked True Crime 2. So it's kind of a new IP, but not entirely? Whatever the case I hope we see more at this level of quality. Just as long as it doesn't end up going down the path that Mafia 2 did.

There was already a True Crime 2. True Crime: New York City which followed Streets of LA.

But I can see the connections, but they still CALLED it something different. If it was named "True Crime: Hong Kong", then maybe people would have treated it like a sequel. But True Crime was a mediocre entry anyway. It was interesting to have the real cities, but there was no diversity in the people. The people walking around China Town in LA looked the same as the people walking around Compton, while in GTA you had gangs in their own locales.

Disagreements about the quality of the story aside(in short: it's pretty bad), I wouldn't say that copying tropes from movies should really count as moving the genre forward.

So which open-world game had a better hand to hand combat system than Sleeping Dogs? Just curious, because I want to play it.

If we're arguing Sleeping Dogs not moving the genre forward in any way.

I think the only thing GTA V has to worry about is GTA 4. That game just felt...apathetic. I mean. I loved the story, believe it or not. But it was the first GTA game that I beat...and just didn't really touch again.

Which was very strange considering the fact that it was the first GTA game online. Just felt like to much wasted potential and a dead world. Sure, there were NPC's walking everywhere but that was about it. They stripped out all the amazing things one could do in San Andreas and just had annoying cell phone calls break into your gameplay every 15 minutes. Or an online multiplayer mode devoid of all the cool minigames you could enjoy in single player mode.

I just hope they learned their lesson from that. If they do, I think GTA 5 won't disappoint.

Yo, you didn't mention that shit in the post that I quoted. Maybe you should read it, because I didn't disparage the combat at all.

Still, If Arkham City counts I preferred the combat there. And I thought RDR had better gunplay. Sleeping Dogs is fun though, I enjoyed my time with it.

Ya, I removed your quote from my post like 10 seconds after I hit submit, you were quick enough to catch it though.

I suppose Arkham City is technically an open world game, and the combat in that is better to me as well, but it's definitely not a "GTA-clone". I'll give you RDR for gunplay as well, but that was never really in question.

It either needs mechanics on par with Sleeping Dogs or it has to be as ludicrous as Saint's Row 3 for me to buy it. I'm only 1 person though when millions will but it no matter how bad it is.

Good god, no. Sleeping Dogs has the worst camera and driving in any open world game ever made.

Sleeping Dogs had pretty basic arcade handling with a cool shunt system and action hijacks, how is the shit in GTA4 better? Also what camera issues did you have? I'm on PC and it's never been an issue.

Because the cars have weight and take skill to drive efficiently. Thats how.

Man, the complaints about the driving in GTA IV scare the hell out of me. I really hope Rockstar keeps that motion and weight that was in GTA IV. I thought the driving is Saints Row 3 felt really janky and fucked up, felt like the cars wouldn't keep momentum if you stopped accelerating, which is pathetic because anyone that owns a car in real life knows you coast most of the time or apply a little acceleration instead of always gunning it.

I can already see it, "GTA V is pretty awesome so far but the driving is still shitty. I can't believe they didn't fix the driving."

If I want full car realism in my open world games, then I expect first person view support while driving and steering wheel support. You can't give cars completely realistic weight and expect my controller stick to be my only input method in controlling it.

You could hack your PC version to support first person mode and steering wheel support if you refuse to download later GTA4 patches in which Rockstar broke those mods again.

So why create realistic driving physics without allowing support for the very control devices and player-viewpoints that are designed for realistic driving?
