Does the PS4 Pro Play UHD Blurays?

I'll wait for a better source but I don't doubt it since they didn't mention it once. Absolutely baffling decision if true.

Company that makes 4k TV and Bluray movies doesn't include UHD drive on their newest console.

Sony is the new Nintendo...

I'm confused as fuck. It's hard to believe that it doesn't. If it doesn't...why the hell would I buy it? What's the point of this console if not? It's a 4K console that doesn't support 4K blu rays? Is that right?

I'm not buying it. I hope I mean this figuratively.

If true, I'm not gonna upgrade, what a fucking mess. A product that does everything 4k except play UHD discs, WTFFFFFFF? Confusing as hell, even the Xbox slim plays UHD

Let's wait a little bit before jumping off the deep end. Rememeber when MS announced the Xbox One S, it was not clear until a few hours after the Conference that it indeed had a UHD player in it. They also talking about 4k Streaming and such, but not until after was it confirmed to also have the UHD player.

The only reason I can see Sony not doing this is they are banking on streaming 4k content and to keep costs as low as possible.

MS mentioned it had UHD BD in the conference itself though. Sony didn't.

I'd love for it to have it but people don't buy movies. Blu-ray never overtook DVD. Sony is clearly hedging their bets on 4K streaming even if they'll support the niche audience for UHD in the short term.

I don't understand the reasoning they could have to not include this functionality. Especially when their competition already has a product on the market that does. What are they thinking?

This is a huge dissapointmemt. I assume they wanted to keep the price below 400. But I would have preffered a $500 price tag with a uhd player.

I was considering picking one up if it did UHD but now...nope. I just don't see the appeal. Things look slightly prettier but not a big enough change for me to drop $400 on it.

Maybe Cerny is just trolling Rigby?

This has GOT to be an error right? I mean Sony's on the Blu ray board.

I agree. Kind of like when you guys showed the S at E3 Frankie, the presser had no mention of UHD player, it was not until after the event that it was clarified that it had it.

Strike that...it was mentioned in your intro to the S video.

I just remember confusion after the your presser about it and Phil/Major confirming it has a UHD player.

Seems a little insane for them not to support it.

Maybe they're hoping people will double dip and ALSO buy a Sony 4K Blu-ray Player?

This is a bit of a retarded move. The only reason I wanted a disc drive in this thing is for 4K Blu Rays, all my games are digital, I would rather have a streaming only version and make it look nicer.

Hilarious all this talk about 4K and HDR, and then you watch compressed streaming shit.

remember that high five moment sony had a few years back at e3 and xbox price.

I think MS is high fiving for many reasons in their offices today

The Pro is only $100 more than the Slim, it wouldn't surprise me if they cut 4K BRD to meet that price point.

Frankly, I'd rather keep my regular PS4 and buy an actual 4K Blu-Ray player now. Sale lost, Sony, good going!

Actually, scratch that, I forgot the Xbox One S is $299 and offers 4K Blu-Ray, makes this whole thing absolutely baffling. I wish the games press wasn't so worthless that someone at the show can't get a completely iron-clad citable source that can confirm or deny this.

[EDIT] I guess, I'll trust Engadget. Definitely not wasting money on this worthless box anymore. In fact, I'm probably cancelling my PSVR pre-order since they pretty much confirmed PS4 Pro was the best way to use it.

You are correct sir. I just rewatched the presser and they indeed mention it in writing "4k Video and Blu Ray".

I just know after the presser, many of us here were not clear if the "S" had a UHD player, but about 1-2 hours after the presser, it was made clear that the S had a UHD drive.

I cant believe it.

I was all aboard the PS4 Pro train. Was going to preorder tonight.

Wow. That is an all time fuck up Sony.

I own 17 UHD films right now as I type this. Please tell me more about me.

UHD is never going to come close to DVD or even Blu-ray. The market has spoken for years that it cares about convenience, flat fee service and piracy.
