Does the size of your TV matter in online console FPS?

commish

Jason Kidd murdered my dog in cold blood!
Is there any advantage or disadvantage to having a bigger or smaller TV? I was talking with a buddy of mine this morning and he said he is having a harder time playing online FPS since he purchased a much bigger TV. Naturally I assume he's just qq'ing at his lack of skill, but I suppose it's possible one way or the other.

The bigger TV might result in more response time or display lag.
Best possible thing for your friend to do is turn off any post-processing the TV does while playing games. And if he's on 360, play over VGA.

The size of the TV has nothing to do with response time or lag, but the processing certainly will. More than likely his new/bigger TV just lags more. Of course, it may just take some getting used to playing on a larger screen.

Yes, and No. It depends how far you sit away from the TV though. Someone who sits close to a 24 inch monitor will outplay the person who is sitting 10 feet away from a 54 inch screen. Clearer vision = see more = better awareness = better shots. It's a fact.

Your friend has legitimate complaints. I play on my friends DLP, and it sucks so much ass for FPS. It's too big, and too bright. I have zero game sense when playing on it, and I don't really give a fuck half the time.

I find it easier to play on a bigger screen but there is a limit. I play typically on a 60 inch tv and actually sit a little closer than if I were watching tv. It feels more immersive and I pick up more of the details such as someone running around a corner or a piece of head sticking out from cover. However, I also have 120 inch home theatre screen and I find it's just TOO big for FPS games. I find that I just can't process it all in and then I wind up missing a lot more of the details on each side.

I don't know for sure or not. But what I do know for sure is that I hate gaming on any HDTV smaller than my 61" LCD.

I am way better on smaller TVs. Easier to pick out movement. But I also get a headache when staring at a smaller screen. Big TVs are just more comfortable to play on, and the overall impression you get from the graphics is improved.

Halo is one game in particular that simply feels better to me when played on a small screen. The reticle moves smoother and I feel more in control the smaller the TV is.

native 600p on a 50+ inch is pretty gross.
You can argue this all you want, but the impact a scene makes is more powerful when it's on a bigger screen. I sit about fifteen to twenty feet away from my 42" plasma, and I could list a whole range of faults with Halo 3's or Call of Duty's supbar IQ on consoles, but ultimately I can't pick out a whole lot of them in typical conditions when the game is in motion. It's easy to be elitist and make smarmy comments like "lol 'HD,'" but at the end of the day the point still stands.

It's not simply being impressed with the graphics, either. Being able to run 60 bullshots a second on my PC has sort of diluted the ability of consoles to wow me. It's more the composition of visuals, the art and the style that's been designed. Here's a non-game example: are you more likely to be interested in watching a movie (I don't know, pick something you like: The Dark Knight, Citizen Kane, The Grand Illusion, Children of Men, whatever) on a big screen, or on a 9" VCR/CRT combo?

I find it much easier to play when its taking up more space in my vision. It makes it far easier to see things off in the distance, and judge spacially how much movement is needed to get your aim correct.

When you have a big TV, you tend to sit back on the couch and play. I brought my desk chair right up to the TV and my scored improved drastically.

it's a balance i think. distant things are easier to spot on a large screen, but if the screen is too large and you can't focus on the entire screen, then you'll miss a lot of things in the peripheral.

i'm not sure what the ideal distance/screensize is for this type of thing.

surely we can work it out WITH SCIENCE!

If anything, it's probably just the increased size makes for more scanning at first. You get used to it.

I sit pretty far back from my 42" on single player, but move up for Multi. There's definitely such a thing as too close, though; if you can't see the whole screen in a glance then you're screwed.

It's true. Everything seems small on other, smaller HDTVs.

The bigger the TV I mode I get raped.

Better to use a decent size tv in my opinion.

Having a larger HDTV takes a little getting used to, but it's not a hinderance to your performance.

There's a chart I've seen a few times. I sit about 6' from my 61" LCD...maybe a little closer.

There's definitely a sweet spot where you get the benefit of being able to spot small movements more easily without the drawback of having to physically move your head to see everything. It's going to vary by room size and personal taste, though - my 42" seemed vast when I bought it but now I could stand to go a little bigger.

If we're talking about a gameplay advantage in the sense that you can spot things more easily, I think having surround sound makes a far bigger difference. It's really easy to see who has it and who doesn't when you're sneaking up on someone or attacking them from an angle.

I find size to be relative. Bigger screen, I sit farther away, smaller screen I sit closer, apparent size to me? exactly the same. In terms of videogaming the only time I prefer a giant screen is for 2-way or 4-way splitscreen, something that is almost nonexistent this generation.

Far more important to me is matching resolution to display size and power of videocard.

I only have 49" but I sit about 3 feet in front of my tv b/c i'm blind. this is just for gaming for tv and movies i sit about 7 feet back

I sit the same distance from an 80"+ screen, you get used to it.

After that anything smaller/further away feels shit.
Same here.
I upgraded my 32" TV to a 50" because I didn't want to sit closer than 6' in front of my TV.
But I still prefer 4' for regular games an 2' for race games.

Dammit, gonna pick a bigger one next time.

Seriously? That sounds too close for comfort.

Nah, it's actually perfect. I can't find the seating distance/HDTV size chart I was talking about, but I remember that I could sit up to 7' feet away without losing detail.

that has nothing to do with your performance in game though.

It kinda does. If you sit too far away, then you lose the benefit of an HDTV's high(er) resolution.

Basically, when I play online, then I tend to sit up because it helps me focus better. Otherwise, I tend to lean back on my comfy couch with my feet up on my ottoman when I game.

Almost assuredly it's because the new tv has higher input lag than old one (has nothing to do with size). Some tvs just suck more than others.

On the size issue, first time I've heard people saying it's too hard to see the whole screen. How close do you guys sit? I sit 8 feet from a 51 inch and I could easily do 70+ from the distance without it being an issue.

I prefer playing CoD4/MW2 on my 22 inch monitor than my 46 inch LCD.

For me theres less space for my eyes to travel if I need to look at the map or check my ammo on the monitor than on the LCD.

2 feet for racing games?!

I do the vast majority of my gaming sitting right in front of my 21.5" monitor, but sometimes when I have people over we will play COD, Halo or NHL on my HD projector, which is approximately 88" corner to corner, and everyone who normally plays on a TV has a pretty hard time adjusting at first.

I find there's just too much to look at with an image that big, and I prefer to sit really close to a small screen than a regular distance away from a larger screen. If I have to turn my head to see what I'm trying to look at on screen, it's too big.

If his previous TV was a CRT, there is a major difference between CRTs and flatpanels such as LCD.

I play on a 100" screen and there is no doubt it helps in some aspects. I was picking snipers off from across any and all maps with my M-16 in MW2. I could imagine the player on the other end was wondering "How the hell did he see me?".:D

It's not the size that matters, it's what you do with it.

We are not talking about penis here.

As for the TV, it is how you get used to it. IF you get used to a 40inch tv and switch to a 24 or a 55, you will have problems in the beginning with your eyes to get adjusted.

So once you make a move, to a smaller one or a larger one, give it some time for your eyes to adapt.

Absolutely.

Bigger TV means bigger heads to shoot at and bigger reticules to shoo them with. :D :lol

In reality, reaction time of the human and lag time of the connection and TV have a lot more to do with how good you are.

I sit about 4 feet away from my 40" TV and play well on 360 BF:BC2. I sit about 1 and a half feet from my 22" monitor and usually get my ass kicked on BF:BC2. I see just about everything on both screens, I'm just not so hot on PC.

It depends on how far you sit. If you sit 10ft away from a 23" display you'll need binoculars and If you sit 4ft away from a 65" TV then you might have issues looking around lol, but imo a larger screen sitting at a recommended distance works better for me for getting head shots for instance, especially with distance where it could appear tiny on a small screen but more visible on a larger screen and easier to target ;-)

If his TV doesn't have game mode, he's doing it wrong.

I prefer playing my shooters on 360 more like a PC player would, on a 22 inch monitor with VGA input, sitting about a foot away from the screen. Large TV's usually have more screen lag and it is harder to have full awareness of the screen.

I like gaming like this in general, but I'm not opposed to playing on a larger screen for most games, especially RPG's like Oblivion, etc.

I think the larger screen gives you an atvantage, especially as a sniper/recon, as I can see tiny movement easier. It does take getting used to though, and you do tend to relax more/lean back. I sit about 7 ft from my 50 inch plasma generally.

It helped me quite a bit when I bought a bigger TV. I found it a lot easier to pick up where other players were on the screen.

I use to have a 32" TV but one day I played Bad Company 2 on my friends 52" TV and I had a crazy good game. I really think it makes a difference, although dont pros play Halo on small TVs? I guess though stuff in halo stands out.
