Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

I remember DK64 as being this incredible game. The I played it about a year ago and yikes. I just played through the first world of DKC and it's still awesome.

DKC2 is one of the best platformers of all time.

i'm not the hugest advocate of dkc, but dkc2 is a really pretty damn fun 2d platformer with some very boss music. i'd recommend you scope it out if you're curious about the series.

All great.

DKC2 has a darker atmosphere and amazing music.

DKC3 has a more lively atmosphere and amazing music.

DKC1 is also great, and also has amazing music.

If you are the type who enjoys going back and playing old skool Mario, you will likely find any of these games amazing.

I think DKC2 is probably the best of the games in the series.. but really you can't go wrong with any of them. The twitch aspects and boss fights are better in 2.. by the time 3 came around I had grown a bit tired of the series. IIRC they were annual releases right at the end of the SNES lifetime.

They still hold up as solid 2d platformers.. but the graphics haven't aged super kindly. They scream mid-90s technology trying to look beyond the technology pushing it. Amazing looking at the time, but now that we have actual 3d HD graphics, the faking it that some of the later SNES games tried hasn't aged super well.

thanks guys. going to download DKC2, then if i like it i'll move onto the others.

you seriously can't go wrong with DKC2 - the best music in the series, the best overall theme (PIRATES, dammit! Yarrrr), some of the best levels, tons of secrets. Plus some of the harder levels will make you scream and throw your controller @ the screen, but you'd still want more.

I also think the graphical effects have held up a bit better in DKC2 and DKC3 than they did in the original.

The first game has some little bits here and there that looked awkwardly flat in comparison to the characters. Don't recall that in DKC2 or 3.

it's not the best looking series on snes or anything, but i can't see how anyone who can stomach 90% of the shitty psone 3d could look at a dkc game and complain too much.

needs more blast corps!

I agree with this statement. It's nice the see DKC and GoldenEye getting revivals, but I really wish that Nintendo could have kept Blast Corps in the divorce too. I can't image that Rare is going to do anything interesting with it. I think Retro or Treasure could have a lot of fun with the Blast Corps franchise if given the opportunity.

100% not disagreeing with you. Early 3d games have not aged all that well. Especially Saturn and PS1 games. I replay Knights and Crash Bandicoot 1 on occasion and they look like poop on a stick.

8 bucks for SNES games. Probably 3 dollars more than they should be, but I fell for it again and again :(
yeah :(
Off topic, Nintendo's pricing strategy is stupid. It makes small games impossible to succed.

How does the classic controller (non-pro) feel with DKC1/2/3? Does it feel like a snes pad or should I just grab a pro?
I would like to know as well, I need to retire my snes and use VC.

IGN: I was interviewing them earlier, and even though you weren't directly involved you were definitely very inspirational in making sure certain things were done in that game correctly. I'm wondering, which parts of Donkey Kong Country did you like versus not like? And what did you address with them?

Miyamoto: The first point that I want to make is that I actually worked very closely with Rare on the original Donkey Kong Country. And apparently recently some rumor got out that I didn't really like that game? I just want to clarify that that's not the case, because I was very involved in that. And even emailing almost daily with Tim Stamper right up until the end.

And with this game too, I'll be involved on a check/confirmation level, looking over the game and checking the content. So it'll probably be a similar role to what I played in the development of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

In terms of things that I really wanted to see them focus on, particularly was the idea that in the original Donkey Kong Country the rendering and the effects that they used were very different from what you'd see in a Mario game. It had a very distinct feel. I thought it was important for them to keep that in mind. And also the fun of seeing the motion of that Donkey Kong hand slap is something that you don't get in other games as well.

Hrm, seems that comment was just a rumor.

Really, really good. The closest you'll ever get to the real thing, I had absolutely no problems with it. Nintendo knows how to make a good, quality pad.

It's not a SNES pad that's for sure. But it's good enough. It's too chubby for me and the L/R are kinda mushy.

I'm sounding negative but it's actually good.

Haven't tried the Pro, but the original is the best solution I've seen since the original SNES controller. Had no problem with it.

The rumor wasn't that he didn't like DKC, the rumor was that he didn't like the pressure on him to make Yoshi's Island look just like it.

According to Steven Kent, Miyamoto said that "Donkey Kong Country proves that players will put up with mediocre gameplay as long as the art is good."

I know, and I agree with you, I was merely commenting on that particular remix/mashup/whatever. I think some of the GBA versions don't quite fit with the game... but oh well, that's just me and Dave Wise is still a great composer <3

I think it was the fact that Dave Wise had been away from it for so long. The three DKC games were made in quick succession, one year after each other - it was very easy for him and eveline fischer to keep the same mood and themes going. After a decade, I can understand dave wise not being able to get into the same...zone. It sounded very disconnected to the other two games on the GBA.

I'm actually getting quite eager to hear yamamoto's music for this game now. He's seriously the only composer I can think of who would be able to do the job on a new DKC (from his music on metroid - his music adds so much to the experience). And he's doing it.

And yes, music is a big part of the DKC series for me. :lol

edit: going along with the topic of music, just listen to these pieces - this guy is working on DKC4:

Phendrana Drifts: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbbUv1hz6mE

Brinstar Red Soil Area: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WSrhBJP_kGM

Tallon Overworld: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V6Ky2BMVWfs

The Phendrana Drifts theme could easily fit in a DKC game. It's gonna be good!

And he much later amended that saying that he was getting pressure from the higher ups to not let Mario be visually upstaged by anyone.

Now... why the hell haven't I got to play this yet?!

Do what I did and buy a SNES-Gamecube controller adapter. I play all my VC games with the real thing. Works perfectly, cost me a tenner. If you don't want the wires, there's adapters on ebay that let you plug a snes controller into the wii remote like a classic controller.

there are some good songs on the GBA version, though. Stilt Village is better than the original, IMHO (somehow!), the new Water World is cool (though the original is far more atmospheric) and so is Waterfall. There's also this piece that was used in the underwater sections of the river stages that's very nice.

While we're reveling in awesome Donkey Kong music I've been enjoying the water theme from DKC3.

I'm pretty mad that DKC3 isn't on the Australia VC. I was planning to buy a Wii so I could play all 3 until DKCR comes out.

Woahh.

Emulation then, maybe? Or buy it from ebay?

What about Europe? You can change that right?

I have no idea how they'll top aquatic ambience/forest interlude themes...but they better try!

I beat the first one in 52 minutes with 101%

and the second one in 1 hour 30 minutes 102%

was obsessed with this game.

The level in the first link looks amazing. If they keep up that quality of level design throughout the whole game, it's really going to be something special. And in the third one, you can see that the roll-jump is still in.
It looks amazing.

I wish I could get my hands on it already =(

For my money, the original DKC games for SNES are among the most ingenious and well-designed platformers ever.

And this new DKC looks extremely similar to those games, except with some fresh new ideas that weren't possible back then.

Basically, I think this game cannot fail.

Going by the last video it looks like they kept roll jumping in. Awesome.

The background in the mine cart section definitely has a Metroid Prime vibe to it.

It was never a incredible game.:D

I've never seen it, but it sounds like they really did their homework on this one. As of now, my only complaint would be with the characters themselves. The lack of fur on DK, in both texture and effect, is a bit of a bummer. Seeing how Retro did Prime and the style of development it had, it will probably be an issue that is fixed. Still, as of now, bummer. Meaty controls sound awesome though. So glad they are paying attention to that aspect.

Eh...not sure about this jet pack thing...

There's that goddamn music again! So good! GT seem to have been given a bunch of tracks from the game.
I don't like how much emphasis they place on the reusing of the old music in this and other interviews.

Game is looking rad.

That was fantastic. And it highlights how terrible at playing games some of the staff over at GameTrailers are.

I think it's great that they include stuff from DK64, including this and the peanut pistol.:D There are also some graphical effects from the N64 game in there. I saw it in some videos!
