Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

Yeah, because this is a totally original game. it's not like it's named Donkey Kong COUNTRY, features the same exact main characters, rehashed music from the first game, and key elements such as launching barrels and mine carts, not at all. Weak argument is weak.

The footage looks great. I'll definitely have to get the SNES games from the VC.
I am seriously loving Nintendo's revival of 2D platformers right now, what a time to be alive.

I don't know about the fact that you can take up to four hits. They should at least have a DK only hard mode.

How can I be the only one that's bothered by Diddy riding DK? Am I weird for that or something?

It's not too weird. DKC2 and 3 both had partner-on-the-shoulders mechanics.

Not sure if posted already, but here's 7 minutes of footage.

I'm amazed that Retro actually put jiggies in the game! :lol

Great video. This really shows off the level of detail put into this. Tons of life in the backdrops and foreground and lots of variety of secrets to be found (secret barrel leading to the shrunken ship in th background; hearts behind bushes; pounding barrels into the ground to reveal chests). Wasn't a big fan of the original but am very much looking forward to this one.

aaaww fuck just watched the trailer. I'm on a LOVEFiLM plan but damn if I won't buy this game day one.

Just watching the video took me right back to September 1994 when I was 14, working in Club Nintendo, and unpacked the first EP-ROM of DKC.

You are not. Hoverpacks/double jump = lazy platforming.

The one where you could through the girl and she could latch onto things and lift you up and such?

Yeah, throwing I was cool with. If they did like a double jump mechanic where Donkey throws diddy and grabs his tail or some goofy shit it would have the same effect. Just feels weird that you're riding your equal buddy instead of something like in Timon and Pumbaa the difference in size just isn't there

I wouldn't call that a double jump. It's just a less-powerful version of Dixie's ponytail twirl.
It doesn't go as far, but I don't remember Dixie's ponytail being something you could activate at any point of the jump. I could be wrong though.

The animation is incredible. I think the game looks better than Galaxy. I'm really liking the level design too, although it's a bit easy but it's not an indication of the final game.

But... why are there so many things to collect? I would've been content with either KONG or the jiggy pieces. But it's both, plus those honeycomb things. As if I follow the reward for all of those is lives?

Any time Dixie is falling downward through the air and the player has control, you can do her pony tail. You can even cancel out of a ponytail, drop a little bit, and re-initiate the ponytail again at any time.

you are wrong.

The hovering is actually less of an aid since it lasts for such little time.

im hoping the hearts are just there for the demos and the final version has 1 hit deaths.
graphics look great. interactive and with ton of detail. my biggest worry right now is the controls. shake to roll? no thanks.

at least have classic controller support if there is a lack of buttons on wiimote

Are you doing this to yourself on purpose? It's fairly obvious the hearts will be in the final game.

If anything, they would remove the hearts for the demo even if they're in the final game, because they want people to lose faster and shorten the waiting time.

Huh? DKC2 had more items that that and it was the best in the series :/
The KONG letters, Hero Coins, Krem Coins, and Banana Coins.

Yes, and it was the worst thing about the game, too.

If no K.Rool, then make Stanley the Bugman the final villain.

:lol That would be so awesome.

EDIT: I guess you guys have been talking about the interview for the past couple pages already...

That could be a good thing... if these Kitis were actually any more appealing than their Kremlings counterparts.

But as far as we have seen, their design is boring and unoriginal, Kremlings were much much better, at least they had personality.
How many enemies have we actually seen? How many levels have they shown?

And no, only a few varieties of Kremling had "personality" and they came later in the game.

Dixie's ponytail's features:

1. If you pressed jump a second time while jumping and held it down; you'd spin around and you'd go down a lot slower.

2. If you pressed the run button as well you could very quickly spin sideways to cover quite a lot of horizontal ground in mid-flight.

The problems:

1. you couldn't gain altitude, the moment you activate it you'll slowly float downwards till you eventually hit the ground.

2. after activating it once you can't activate it again, so going out of the spin meant falling just like the other kongs.

---------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as I could tell Diddy's Jetpack's different in these ways:

good:

1. it keeps you at the same height.

bad:

2. it seems to end after 1-2 seconds.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

I think Diddy's might be better simply cause it keeps you at the same altitude for a short while, though both of them are better in different situations depending on level design.

the only thing I do notice is that you apparently don't have to switch who your main guy is to take advantage of the jumping and stuff; so you pretty much get Dixie's flight + DKs strenght at the same time.

You can re-initiate it? I don't remember that.

But you need to have both Kongs. During single-player, if you get hit enough times, do you lose Diddy? I'd guess so since there are times when you start off as just Donkey. It's effectively the same thing as being little Mario and big Mario with the latter affording certain advantages besides just giving you an extra life (in the sense that if you get hit you just become small again).

You definitely can't. Been playing DKC2 since it first came out, it's my favourite game of all time. I should know. :lol

Really? I thought it was pretty well implemented.
KONG letters you can usually ignore, especially in the later levels since there's a good chance of screwing up.

Hero Coins are perfect. They reward you for pulling off a tricky maneuver or thinking outside the box. And you get to shit on Sonic's shoes :lol

Kremcoins are a progression mechanic for the Lost World. It's no different from Mario Galaxy 2's "gather X stars to move on" except it's entirely optional. If you don't even want to bother there's a special trick to get 75 kremcoins in the first level of the game.

Banana coins are just the typical money item.
And technically, even DKC1 had more collectibles. KONG + Winky/Rambi/Espresso/Enguarde tokens.

A completely optional aspect of the game is the worst thing about the game?

What the fuck crack are you smokin', son?

This makes me think a trashcan with references to MS and Sony characters somewhere in the game would be funny. Like a Halo gun and Ratchet's wrench or something.

Neiteio said:
In single player, can I switch Diddy to the lead character and directly control him with DK following?

Doesn't look like it. The most you get to "play" as Diddy seems to be having him on your back and making use of his jetpack and popguns.

IT'S JUST A DEMO

YOU DON'T NEED TO COLLECT EVERY BANANA
Meh, those things are there to pad out the game. But how can you not collect them?

I hope there are cool unlockables or something for collecting them, not just lives.

It looks like both characters get two hits before they vanish; so it seems like you get to keep whatever Kong's leading even after getting hit once;

What I was talking about isn't necessarily that you can't lose the kongs;

It's just that in the old games you couldn't use a character's advantage without having him as your main, a.k.a risking losing him/her first.

If you put say, Dixie first in DKC cause you loved her flight; it'd mean that getting hit once kills your flight as you'd only have Diddy left.

As far as the gameplay videos seem to indicate, Donkey Kong can use Diddy's jetpack even if DK's the one being played as at the moment.

I don't really care which method is used, I can see this having advantages; I just noticed this being different from the old DKC games, where the 2nd character's powers weren't available unless you select-switched to them.

Gameplay-wise this seems ace though, I've hoped for a good co-op sidescroller but felt kinda indifferent about NSMB wii, this at the other hand feels like one of my favourite childhood games with solid co-op added. (I do wonder if "classic" mode is possible, where players switch control after one gets hurt.)

Actually someone earlier said YES YOU CAN! :D

I can try to find the post.

Edit: Found it!
Eh, I'm not getting my hopes up that you can control Diddy directly. Those blogs may be referring to the fact that you can activate his jetpack and popguns, rather than controlling Diddy himself.

I need to see video footage of someone controlling DK and Diddy with Diddy in the lead. In single player.

Just throwing it here but had to vent:

This is my game of E3 right after LBP2. I really cannot fucking wait to play this!!
