Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

I saw a used black Wii bundle going for just $129.99 at a local game shop yesterday, and I almost bought it just for the impending release of DKCR. Almost. It's a fucking steal, but I just couldn't justify it... =(

I think it's sad you feel that way. :( Lots of good stuff on the Wii this fall.

Jungle Beat makes for terrible fucking screenshots, but it's one of the best looking games on the GC, hands down.

Same deal with the Prime games, actually.
It's so sad really...

I fail to see why Rare would give a damn about that ugly new "Goldeneye" game. Maybe DKCR, but sure as hell not that other thing.

Well simple when was the last time anyone gave a damn about a Rare game? I mean honestly?

Compared to the "ugly" new Goldeneye which was at the center of Nintendo's e3 conference and has been getting fairly good press for the last 3 months.

And is shaping up to be a good game from all appearances.

Are there any shots of the file select menu or title screen menu yet?

I can't wait to see what Retro come up with this time! :lol (Ultra spinning 3D close up detailing the realistic internal anatomy of a cartoony banana perhaps? :lol)

Jungle Beat had both artistic talent and shader effects. I'm not saying DKCR is ugly mind you, I think it looks great. I'm just disappointed that it's missing some of graphical polish of Jungle Beat. It's like a no win situation for me. I think DKCR does have better texturing, but Jungle Beat looks cooler with all the effects.

I can never get pass the penis hands though.

Are there any new Infos regarding the Kremlings and K. K. Rool? I did´t read the new info since E3, and I still have hope to see some of the iconic Crocodiles wandering around...

Retro has stated they will not be in the game. Could be toying with us, but it seems to be the case.

there were no kremlins in DKJB and it was a great game.
I think the only reason people are a bit let down by the lack of Kremlings is that they were very memorable. Sure, JB didn't have any, but on the same token, almost none of the enemies in there were really all that memorable or held any sort of grip whatsoever. Jungle Beat was an awesome game that you had some really great experiences in, but it didn't have the same impact as DKC when it comes to being memorable. Gameplay and graphics wise, I loved the hell out of both of them...but DKC has the upper hand when it comes to everything else.

I think everyone will cool down once they find out the new set of enemies has some personality that plays out well on screen. Although it could work out gameplay wise, if the bad guys aren't memorable, it will be a let down in that sense coming from DKC.

JB's greatness entirely transcended the presence or absence of any character.
Yep :D

And I think Retro knows this. It would be ok for me if it turns out the new bad guys have enough personality to carry the game, but it would be great if they teased K. Rool at the end of the game for possible sequels.

Hey. Guys. Chill.

Donkey Kong Country 1/2/3 look great. Jungle Beat looks great. This looks great. Quit hatin'.

*high five*

Absolutely. People stop whining about Jungle Beat, or Tiki characters. You're not even giving fresh new characters a chance. Hell they might even be so awesome that you want them to return for any future DKC game!

I already prefer the Tiki over Kremlings. They've got a cool voodoo vibe going on, which I think totally suits the DK universe imo.

I just remember that Retro is the team that gave us Space Pirate logs such as, "We tried copying the Hunter's morph ball ability but the first few test subjects wound up horribly mutilated so we stopped trying," and, "Metroids are not pets, Metroids are not target practice," and any worries I have of the new enemies being interesting and memorable immediately disappear.

That, and Andrew mutha-truckin Jones.

Retro has lost the three most important people responsible for making the Prime trilogy masterful, I don't think anything is certain about what that studio will be producing now.

I haven't kept up on Retro staffing - is he still on board at Retro? A lot of staffers left, so I can't keep track!

Andrew Jones has been gone for awhile. I could be wrong, but I think he didn't even work on Corruption.

Yeah, that's what I thought, but I read the above comments as "Andrew Jones will be on DKC:R"

I hope some talent stayed on at Retro. These guys are truly at the top of their game.

Yeah, they lost some key staff, but I dont think Jones is working with Retro for DKCR. Jones runs Massive Black, while the three guys that left Retro went on to form Armature Studio.

Jones might be working with Retro, since Massive Black isn't a development studio but instead an artist studio that provides concepts and assets for other companies, but I'm guessing they'll want to keep things internal.

I personally feel that they should have gone with a cel shaded donkey kong country but the wii may not be powerful enough to pull off the kind of effects I'm imagining.

I know it's been asked a bunch, but I've never seen if it got answered... do we know who is composing the music for this yet?

Nah the wii could handle cel shading just fine, they just wanted what they wanted and I think it suits the DKC legacy well.

What type of cel-shading is that?

I love the DKC games and I really don't care that the Kremlings are gone. They were fine enemies but far from being close to what made the series great. There's very little lost from their depature.

Thanks for info! Interesting, as they COULD be doing contract work for Retro but it does sound doubtful.

Yamamoto is composing, so it should be awesome.

After playing some Metroid: Other M, I'm really badly wanting my Yamamoto fix. I have faith that he can pull this off. He's got huge boots to fill (this series has some of the greatest game music of all time) but I have high hopes.

Kenji's best work is with melodic ambience, so the Donkey Kong series fits him very well I think. His ability to make understated but memorable themes are in line with Wise's work with the series.

Meh, it works I suppose. But I guess I preferred the "Kong v Kremling" arrangement as something that was closer to Nintendo-style turf warfare that broke it down to simple themes like "Mammals vs. Reptiles" and "Nature vs. Technology". :lol

I think this game looks just fine graphically. I'm worried about the music which seems to be of lesser quality than the original DKC games. They may be the same themes but they don't seem to sound as good...
