Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

I think this game looks just fine graphically. I'm worried about the music which seems to be of lesser quality than the original DKC games. They may be the same themes but they don't seem to sound as good...
This is what I'm worried about as well. I'm sure that Kenji Yamamoto will do a pretty good job based off his record, but I don't know if they will sound as good the older themes.

Yeah, I'm still not totally on board with the tikis. Maybe I like the Kremlings more then I should, but it's not that I'm not giving the tikis a chance. I'm going to take a wait and see approach in regards to the enemies.

Mario 2 or Yoshis island was great although it had no goombas but shyguys instead.

Super Mario Bros. 2 wasn't a Mario game in the first place, and Yoshi's Island is for all intents and purposes, a Yoshi game. There is a reason Shy Guys are more associated with Yoshi now then Mario.

Not to mention that there is a level in Yoshi's Island that had Goombas.

Well what do you expect, previous music set the bar pretty fuckin high.

What I'm saying is that I wish the DKC themes had gotten the Mario Galaxy treatment. :P I dig that they're using the same tunes, at least.

Yeah, i think the best way to move forwards its mixing things up a bit. Not so sure about going with the orchestal treatment for DKC though :/

I think I'm gonna pick up a used Wii pretty much just for this game. Just watched the E3 trailer again, looks awesome.

I think the Kremlins are really actually pretty lame design wise and we won't miss them too much. They are very '90s, and Retro is going for a pretty stylized look in DKCR which would leave the Kremlins looking very out of place. I love how there's so much going on during the levels in DCKR.

It will work great orchestrated, especially tunes from DKC2 and DK64.

Kenji's best work is with melodic ambience, so the Donkey Kong series fits him very well I think. His ability to make understated but memorable themes are in line with Wise's work with the series.
I could be wrong, but I think I have read somewhere that it will be mostly arrangements rather than new compositions.

He said that one of the most important aspects of the DK games was the music. And that he was gonna use plenty of old songs and bring them to the 21st century. I still expect new compositions, but it'll be based heavily on nostalgia.

Kenji's work is amazing, but it's still quite different to Wise. Even though they might use similar inspiration and vision they still create different tunes. I expecte DKCR's soundtrack to be both memorable and high quality, but I also expect it to be considerably different to what Wise created, and I know that some people wont like that.

Yeah, but I like cohesion in art and I think the Kremlins were a great fit. I like that Rare created a 'Primate Vs. Crocodile' style. I like that pretty much every character in the game was based on a real world animal. I like that King K. Rool was an identifiable villain. I especially love the whole pirate theme, which I wish more than anything both Rare and Nintendo had stuck with.

I'm optimistic about the Tiki enemies because I love what Retro have done with Metroid, but I just dont see the point in scrapping the Kremlins when they could have been reinvented with a new vision, much like Retro did with the Space Pirates. I dont see why they have to abandon the entire style of Rare's Donkey Kong vision for something else, when Rare pretty much created the Donkey Kong that many people know.

I especially dont like stuff like this;

Some stupid looking quirky creature that could have been in Mario, Kirby, or any other quirky Nintendo franchise. Nothing about that says "Donkey Kong Country" to me.

Yeah really, did you never play any of the past DKC games? They all had retarded boss characters.

Played them, not the point. It's about having a cohesive art style.

DKCR does have a cohesive style.

I mean, yes... the game looks very different compared to DKC original, but that doesn't mean it's not cohesive.

Not really feeling your soundtrack there buddy..

I guess it's unfair to compare it without the game at the side, but I still don't remember it fondly.

Eh, DK64's music is just Banjo-Kazooie Continued. It's a complete step down from the DKC games, especially DKC2. The DKC games also had really cool, moody music. Nothing in DK64 is nearly as good as some of this stuff

Game just has flat out awesome music. I doubt Kenji will do music as good as what's in the DKC games, but I'm going to imagine it'll be better than anything we heard in DK64.

I don't really miss the Kremlins too much, but I do miss the whole pirate theme... which I guess leads me to believe I secretly DO miss the Kremlins because they made the whole pirate theme work. But whatever, I'm damn pumped to play this game.

Let me blow your minds by saying that i never cared that much for DKC's music (in general).

Gimme DK64's "Banjo-Kazooie-esque" Donkey Kong tracks, or whatever the hell you want to call them, over something as overated as Stickerbrush Symphony **aw shit**

Dont get me wrong, its a good song but its far from Rare's best work imo, even if we limit ourselves to their DK games. I know its not a popular GAF opinion but there you have it.

And before anyone asks, yes i played the games in order. DK64 was not my first DK game.

I gotta say that the difference in sound quality between DKC2 and DK64 is abysmal, lol. I agree with you guys that DK64 it sounds like Banjo-Kazooie...and personally I don't care for that. Doesn't help that it sounds like it came out of a monkey's butt.

Glad they won't be going in that direction.

Forest Interlude is one of my favorites. :D

jesuschrist no.

The original DKC music was ambient music. Really good ambient music, but just ambient music. They set the tone for the environment using specific instruments and notes. Like drums for the jungle and strings for underwater.

But DK64 dared to be more. It told a story by melody, not instrument. Just listen to the overworld theme, how it expresses adventure and the span of the world. Or the theme for the pirate level, how it expresses looming danger.

I'm shocked! :lol

But seriously, i knew you had a formed opinion on this so i didnt even bother posting links in my first post.
I've seen and been in enough of these "prove my opinion over this subjective thing wrong" arguments to know its a complete waste of everybody's time :P

What? The DKC soundtrack is very melodic. The music is heavily layered, but still melodic. Only a few tracks are minimal and ambient.

Personally, for me, the DK64 music you presented doesn't "dare" to do a thing.

but i'm not pushing you down or anything. I still wanted to listen to it. We're not argueing on who has better taste.

Yeah sorry but i'm not really fond of those, and after being exposed to a diferent style of DK music, it doesn't even feel appropriate.

edit: again, its my opinion.

It's a stretch, but just want the music for this game to be as good as DK64. But having it like the SNES DKC music shouldn't be that bad.

DK64 music is great. I can't believe people hate it.
Sure, I can see people not liking the game, but the music? No, the music is fine. Not DKC good, but good.

Speaking about the music, David Wise recently opened his website. Not a lot to see, but man, I wonder why they didn't contact him, at least to make some of the arrangements or remixes =( Oh well, hope I can hear some new music from him soon (in DKCR2 :D).
