Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

Man I played it at PAX.

And I wanted it to be good so bad.

If for no other reason than to tell A GUY I KNOW that he was full of it.

But it was just not fun. Clunky, slow, etc. Just not fun.

maybe it was the environment (it was the only video game i played because frankly i don't care to wait in line to play a demo that is STUPID (the panels and tabletop rooms were much more appealing))

Who knows.

So no Epic Yarn? That's a shame you didn't like what you played.

man when i play this game with a friend i wanna be player one but i also wanna be diddy, what a dilemma.

Just form-up and have Diddy ride piggyback--best of both worlds! (and you can even control his jetpack!)

Yea that's true. My biggest concern with that game is how slow it looks. : \

not really though, you can turn into a car whenever you want. I see myself being a car all the damn time.

The car's not that much faster, and can really only be used when there's no enemies on-screen. It makes travelling faster, but the overall pace of the game is still considerably slower than DKCR.

Well, if he thought DK was slow, Epic Yarn's not going to seem any faster! :lol
I guess it wasn't clear: it is not that the gameplay itself is slow, but that the controls are slow. DKC had a little bit of input lag, but it still felt tight and right. DKCR did not. \:

I hold out hope that it was just the environment fucking with my head.

And no, I didn't wait in line to play Epic Yarn, a game I will buy regardless. I went and played DIE WEINHÄNDLER with Idle Thumbs instead.

upandaway said:
Did you tell that to someone there and he told you something like "we're still working on it"?

And which control scheme?
Nah, I didn't wanna hold up the line with stupid questions. A games press member, I am not. Besides, I was terrible and I died like three times against really easy stuff, it was embarrassing. I had to turn in my Gamer's Card. ):

It was the nunchuk/remote setup.

My biggest concern beyond the clunkiness/input lag is just how fucking STUPID it feels to make a "pound" motion to roll. What. (For the record: I have absolutely no problem whatsoever with the shake-to-spin in Galaxy.)

That's a bit disheartening to hear :(
Hopefully Retro will nail down the controls since they are now in the polish phase.

Errrr, can we get back to talking about Donkey Kong now?

Watch this and then tell me just how amazing it looks! :D

Why is it exactly that the game has no underwater levels? During that play through, It seems like such a tease to have an underwater level.

Holy crap that was one of the funniest videos in a while, sometimes for semi-unintentional reasons :lol

Reading this would be a complete buzz kill.....but luckily it’s not for me since pretty much everyone else who’s played it has raved about how fantastic and promising it is. Sucks that you didn’t really enjoy it.

I watched that video. I just assumed it would play like the original, so I haven't been following with the gameplay news. Can anyone clear up some questions about the single-player mode?

Do you ever play as Diddy? Diddy gains two extra hearts, so how does this work? Two hits and you lose Diddy and then two more and you lose a life? Do you get four hits?

Is there any feedback on Diddy as a FLUDD jetpack? This part looks pretty bad actually. It could really take away from the fun, speedy, challenging platforming of the originals. Maybe Diddy barrels are limited to certain levels?

Ok....this is as good a time as any to clear up a few things from my observations. :D

Single Player:

You can't ever be Diddy Kong as far as I can tell. You play as Donkey Kong and once you find the barrel for Diddy he automatically jumps on your back and you can use his jetpack for more accurate jumping. I think you have 4 hearts total...2 for each.

Co-op:

Player 1 is Donkey Kong while player 2 is Diddy. You both have 2 hearts and both Donkey Kong and Diddy can move freely, although if one of you moves off the screen you have a few seconds to get back in view, I'm not sure what the consequence is.

It's also worth mentioning that when Donkey Kong or Diddy lose both hearts a barrel will float on the screen and when you touch it you get revived similar to how it worked in New Super Mario Bros. Oh and hearts seem to be quite common in the levels.

The game to me sounds a little bit too forgiving at the moment. Please don't be easy!

That makes me nervous, I was worried it would feel slow. Hopefully this is the kind of thing Retro can fix.

It's not really that DK doesn't move any more quickly, but that you have to keep stopping to do shit—particularly just go totally dead-stop to pound the ground—it kills the pace. Whereas Kirby keeps moving.

I'm no game designer, but I thought way later, while talking with Twig about it (I had played it at E3) that maybe if the shake had been exclusively pound, if you could have done it while you were moving, and if roll had then been mapped to a button, then you'd have a winning scheme right there.

Epic Yarn isn't faster, but there's more stuff on the screen to interact with. So you're doing more even if you're not doing it faster.

i really hope retro pulls their head out of nintendo's ass and provides us with a competent control scheme.

shake to roll is retarded. (yeah yeah something similar worked in galaxy)
it is not the same at all here though...

No, it's definitely not the same. I will defend Galaxy's spin to the death.

No there isn't--not in general, from what I recall. Fewer collectibles and fewer enemies = less things to do. This was especially evident in two-player--in Donkey Kong, there was almost always something for both players to do, but in Kirby, whoever was out in the lead could take care of most things before the second caught up.

zigg said:

Really? Because that's largely my problem with it. DK's running speed is fine--the problem is it takes a solid moment for him to go from walking to running, due to the lack of a run button. This results in the game seeming slower anytime you come to a rest, and can also make some jumps trickier than they should be since his jump distance varies significantly depending on his speed.

Of course everyone is raving about it. People absolutely love it when Nintendo pulls out their old franchises.

Unfortunately, those same people very rarely talk about how great and fantastic the controls are. They talk about how it looks, how it has BARRELS OH GOD BARRELSSSSSSS.

Trust me, I really wanted it to be great.

Yeah, this. How can you not roll, it's awesome!

No, zigg has a point, though. Once you GET moving, you should be able to STAY moving, rather than having to constantly stop to pound the ground or whatever dumb shit. The momentum in DKC is my literal favorite part. Bouncing on enemies into a long string of barrels landing on a mine cart jumping weaving through waves of those damn bees slipping on ice etc. etc. etc. That shit was good.

The beach level (the one I played) required me to stop waaaay too often. \:

(Also, DK shouldn't need a run button in the first place. U:)

I'm pretty sure it's only 2 hits and dead in SP, but any player can grab the second remote at any time, so that's why they show both bars.

Twig said:

I guess...you had to stop to pound the ground in the original too. And it seems like it's still largely optional and is only required in a few places to trigger something, IIRC.

Twig said:

Most platformers don't need a run button. The point is DK accelerates too slow and should be rectified (but likely won't be).

I am pretty sure you can be Diddy at will

There have been screenshots of Diddy with Donkey Kong following him. Though I guess that could have easily been Donkey Kong getting hit, then Diddy taking over, then Diddy finding a DK barrel.

Would be silly if you couldn't.

Yes, you did, but it wasn't so fucking slow do so, despite the run button's existence. And also like I said: I had to stop waaaaaay too often in that beach level.

Ignore what I said earlier. For some reason I had completely forgotten DKC had a run button, but once I realized I was an idiot, I remembered how often I used it. I just assumed he ran at full speed at all times... Obviously that is not the case!

Haha, no worries =)

As for the beach level, I do see what you mean. But the other levels that I played didn't seem quite as bad in that respect (though it would be a pretty significant oversight if you had to do it while riding a mine cart =D
