Donkey Kong Country Returns announced [N-CONF]

I'm glad that the game designers at Retro are excited to make Donkey Kong Country, and are fans of the series. When the news first broke a lot of people were acting like they were forced into making the game. As if working on a 2d game was some sort of punishment or a waste of talent.

:lol Good times.

No one was upset because it was a 2d game.

It was that, a studio that many members came from a PC game development background, and had shown great art and design sensibility in FPS did not seem like a great fit for a cartoon side scrolling platformer. 2d platforming level design must, necessarily, be a whole different beast from making an exploration heavy FPS.

Additionally, I think many of us were hoping that Retro would be allowed to cook up something original, a property and set of gameplay mechanics they were enthusiastic about and the creators of.

I've become quite pleased with how the game looks and am looking forward to playing. A part of me still wishes Nintendo let Retro do something fresh though.

It is neccesary. Nintendo does a lot of varied things, and it needs to know their newest prized stallion is not a one trick pony.

And it's hardly that they should 'let' them do something different, since they are obviously loving this.

Yeah, me too, but it probably isn't going to happen, since nostalgia makes more money.

EAD Tokyo's case is related; when they finished Jungle Beat (all praise) they wanted to do something new, but Miyamoto asked them to take Mario on instead. The result was awesome two times over, but I can't help but wonder... what would they have come up with otherwise?

As I understand it Retro were working on some "experiments" but they themselves decided to go for Donkey Kong when offered, Miyamoto thought that they would reject it. I dont know about EAD Tokyo but it is possible that they will now work on something new since Miyamoto was mentioning creating a new ip.

Those graphics could've needed some polish, but Retro is no Rare :/

The only thing it needs is a proper shadow from DK, and not the blob. Otherwise I think the graphics are really fantastic. Every part of the environment seems to animated in some way, the lighting looks great, and the particle effects are to no surprise great as well.

It doesn't use the darker style of Rare's games, but it still looks really nice. It doesn't look flat and lifeless, like a lot of shitty games in this style do.

I don't think Retro has even tried to make a Sports collection game

Well, they've both cancelled various games/prototypes...that's one similarity at least.

Imo Retro should've sticked to the DKC1-3 style...right now I cannot find images which show the quality of those graphics. The backgrounds looked a lot better on those SGI stations (I think that it was these things) than in the final SNES games.

The Metroid Primes were more impressive than anything Rare ever shat out on comparable tech.

Well that was a 3D game.

I'm just not too happy with the game's graphics. Especially the DK model looked much better in DKJB. Of course, what's way more important is the game itself which will be no disappointment at all. That's probably why it's better that Rare isn't making it ;)
(And I am probably one of the few people who didn't think that Conker Xbox looked very good.)

It doesn't look flat and lifeless
An important point to which I can only agree with!

Blasphemy! I think the graphics look amazing, and no, not just for a Wii game!

Technically, artistically, animations plus attention to detail are all top notch! :D

Retro can do no wrong....they're the best in the business at the moment IMHO.

I just realized something. This game reminds me of Virtual Boy Wario Land with levels having multiple 2D planes.

Based on what? Metroid Prime was fucking fantastic, probably my favorite game of last gen. But MP2 wasn't anything special, and 3 was fairly mediocre throughout.

Also, this game needs some more snow/factory levels. Thanks.

Funny you mention this. I was playing both DKCR and the 3DS in Nintendo's private room at their booth, and was able to hop immediately from the 3DS to DKCR. My first thought was that DKCR should be in 3D, much like WarioWare, as it would give the plane switching much more oomph.

With that said, DKCR is fantastic--just sort of surprising that it wasn't made a 3DS game.

Can you ride animals in this game like the swordfish and that ostrich wearing nike sneakers?

Unfortunately, there have been no animal buddies in the playable demos they've shown off at E3 and PAX. However, Rambo the Rhino should be in the game, based on the box art. Which means, he's likely playable at the least.

Those weren't real quotes, with him bashing the hell out of the original DKC back in the day?

They were taken completely out of context and twisted.
He was under extreme pressure and was being pestered about a western dev taking his job as king of platformers.
But, I mean, the guy helped design and create the original DKC...

Fair enough.

PS - This game is gonna rock.

He also offered these recent comments in response to a related question from IGN:

IGN: I was interviewing them earlier, and even though you weren't directly involved you were definitely very inspirational in making sure certain things were done in that game correctly. I'm wondering, which parts of Donkey Kong Country did you like versus not like? And what did you address with them?

Miyamoto: The first point that I want to make is that I actually worked very closely with Rare on the original Donkey Kong Country. And apparently recently some rumor got out that I didn't really like that game? I just want to clarify that that's not the case, because I was very involved in that. And even emailing almost daily with Tim Stamper right up until the end.

And with this game too, I'll be involved on a check/confirmation level, looking over the game and checking the content. So it'll probably be a similar role to what I played in the development of Donkey Kong Jungle Beat.

In terms of things that I really wanted to see them focus on, particularly was the idea that in the original Donkey Kong Country the rendering and the effects that they used were very different from what you'd see in a Mario game. It had a very distinct feel. I thought it was important for them to keep that in mind. And also the fun of seeing the motion of that Donkey Kong hand slap is something that you don't get in other games as well.

Looks pretty similar, imo. The body and facial expressions look a bit odd, but otherwise he looks pretty close.

And here's a higher-rez version of the Returns box, for comparison:

Well I think the Wii needs more software in order to mantain sales. If the 3DS really takes off, as I expect, they will probably just keep Donkey Kong Country as a home console exclusive.

Well, sure. I'm just suggesting it would have worked well on the 3DS.

btw more of this please this is hot shit and makes me remember what it was like to lay eyes upon rare's fantastic art for the first time

I hate you for quoting that image again.

(but you're on point)

From Wiki:

“Under the control of a group of evil Tikis, the animals on DK Island have stolen Donkey Kong's bananas, forcing him to retrieve the hoard with the help of Diddy Kong.”

So the animals are under control eh? Well maybe that's the reason Rambi is looking so depressed on the cover? Perhaps he’s being controlled! Evil Rambi anyone!? : O

game is looking good so far..

my only concern is the music.. i have high expectations because dkc had some fantastic music..

please dont let me down retro

Nah...I'm pretty sure he's just high.

Also I wonder if Zingers, Gnawtys, Slippas and Armys will return as enemies.

edit: fixed for accuracy.
