vlad is carry, kayle is support, mundo is tank or whatever the fuck he pleases. thanks for the starter hero recs and the helpful reddit article. gonna dive in!

*edit* gotta love the placeholder half-life sounds. <3 valve

Am I the only one who found playing against bots even on low difficulty to be basically infuriating because there was almost always Zeus and he used his amazing computer-knowledge to always kill you the nanosecond your health crossed the threshold.

My main complaint is that when it shifts to midgame. Bots on either side run to Roshan and get stuck on him so often. They get caught on the ledge or stand right in front of him and don't do anything. When the do attack him it's not uncommon that they leave him just a little bit after they initiate which is a huge time waster. Or even worse they get him down below 3/4ths health and leave him. That happened to me on my side and the other side came in and finished the job quickly and got the aegis. I was playing someone squishy at the time and couldn't finish it off on my own. The whole Roshan thing has basically killed all fun with bots for me.

Yeah the roshan problem needs to be fixed the most. It's so annoying, specially when the enemy team takes tower after tower while you are dead and the rest of your own team is just standing around rosh pit.

So my index finger (left-handed) always gets inflamed from playing DOTA. Anyone else get this? Are there any mice/techniques that help the problem?

Also, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, give Brazil and Russia their own servers. /shudder

You could get a Logitech Trackman Marble Mouse, which you use your Index/Middle Finger for the ball, and your Thumb and Ring Finger for the buttons. The biggest drawback is the mouse only has 2 extra buttons, no scroll wheel, and isn't as good for FPS games and other twitchy games.

Also, the things are nearly unbreakable. I have had the same one for a decade now. I also have two different mice plugged in depending on the application, but usually use the track ball.

There is a South America server.

For vlad, I recommend trying Queen of Pain. (Mid, ganker caster, easy escape, semi carry).

Mundo is a tough one, I would say axe (iniator/tank, runs face first into combat similar to mundo). Alchemist closet to him though in terms of abilities, but I wouldn't recommend playing him.

Kayle would be something close to omniknight (offensive healer, gives nigh physical invulnerability and magic immunity) but he is melee. Dazzle is kinda close but not really. There isn't actually that many healers in this game compared to league. Off the top of my head there is Huskar (kind of a weak healer), Chen, Dazzle, Omni, Enchantress (not a direct heal) and Juggernaut (aoe heal but is a mobile unit that is destroyed in one hit).

Thanks, I'm going to look into one of those.

:/ Why go on US West and speak Portugese the whole time? DOTA requires communication last I checked.

Are those trackball mice actually any good? The damn thing looks like an abomination.

I've got a paranoid suspicion that in random draft the game makes the players it deems to be highest skilled on the team pick first.

Cause when I'm on a team that goes on to win (which probably means I'm on a team that is about as good as me or better), I don't generally pick first or second.

And when I'm on a team that goes on to lose (which probably means I'm on a team that is not quite as good as me), it seems that more often than not, I pick first or second.

Yeah, it actually work pretty well, the ball is easy to manipulate with your fingers, and doesn't require you to move your entire arm and wrists around as much/at all, which can help stop fatigue and whatnot. Also, the thing is great for precise movements. The main reason I got it years ago was I had a desk that had an entire 6 inches of space for a mouse, so I got a trackball, and still use the thing to this day. Also, while it may not be obvious, it is actually an optical mouse, and not a oversized mechanical mouse.

The biggest draw back is that it isn't the best for fast and extreme movements, while it is great for small precise movements. Though the extreme movements may be due to the small nubs that is supposed to keep the ball from coming out have completely worn out over the past decade. The ball is supposed to not come out without exerting a decent amount of force, now I can just turn the mouse upside down and it falls right out. I think the wikipedia page words it best.

"Computer gamers have been able to successfully use trackballs in most modern computer games, including FPS, RPG, and RTS genres, with any slight loss of speed compensated for with an increase in precision. Many trackball gamers are competent at "throwing" their cursor rapidly across the screen, by spinning the trackball, enabling (with practice) much faster motion than can be achieved with a ball-less mouse and arm motion."

Also, just look at those reviews, glowing. Obviously, it takes a few days to get used to the mouse, and it is always funny to see someone see the mouse, and try moving the entire thing.

Lol, fnatic Tinker building a leveled Dagon against Na'Vi. Wants that cheap manacost damage for the fights, I guess (though Rearm cost could get out of hand).

Some poor plays from Fnatic there, gifted Rosh and Lesh kills etc. I feel like they do quite well in early game but fall apart later on. Seemed to be the same case vs mTw, good play early on but then they start losing.

Epi did a good job casting, it's been a while since I last time listened to his commentary so didn't remember him being this good.

I've seen lists of recommended heroes for new players all over the place, but I was wondering if people in here had any specific recommendations. I'm willing to try almost anything, having just started out and not being set into a role I like yet.

And would people here play with me later (or should I ask in the in-game channel?)

I dunno if it would be better to start off against bots solo, co-op against bots, or just throw myself into matchmaking and hope for the best. I'm sure if there was at least one gaffer along for the ride, trial by fire in matchmaking wouldn't be too bad.

Play pudge, most fun hero in the game. Oh and go bots for your first 1~3 games, so that you can learn the shop and general layout.

For those who are great at jungling, What sort of stats should I be looking at when it hits the 10, 15 or even 20 minute mark? No ganking or lane, Just pure jungle.

What level should I be at? Gold? What items should I have?

And when on earth should I stop jungling? I'm so used to repetitive dull tasks that I actually enjoy it. I can sit there all game long chilling in the jungle haha.

The best two characters to start with are Lich and Tidehunter.

Lich: Skill sacrifice first and use it every time it's off cooldown. This will deny the enemy xp and gold. In teamfights, throw your ult when the enemy is somewhat clumped together.

Tidehuner: If you are laning with a carry/semicarry, let them take most of the farm. Use your farm to get arcane boots first, then try to get a blink dagger. Blink into the middle of the enemy team, ult, gush, and spam anchor smash.

On both characters you should get the courier and wards.

For Lycan: Level 8, vlads & medallion of courage finished somewhere between 8-12 minutes. Then buy smoke and roshan to get to level 10.

At 10 minutes you should have:
Lycan: Vlad's, maybe boots, getting ready to solo Rosh
Ursa: Same as above
Furion: Midas, maybe boots
Enig: If you did not buy anything else (aside from starting items), you should have Blink Dagger

Basically, if you're not ganking or pushing, you should have 2000g+ worth of items, particularly the ones that will enable you to surge ahead of everyone else.

If you're playing anyone else in the jungle, you should be ganking, not afk farming, so don't worry too much about your gpm.

Has anyone else been having problems with their fps? I usually play with high on everything but I've been getting ~20fps a couple times lately.

But but but .. I like being afk farming noob.

It's something im trying to stop doing, Which is why I asked what I should be looking at around the 10 minute mark.

At the moment i'm playing axe a fair bit and sitting in the jungle is enjoyable. I mostly try and get the core stuff, van, blink and blade. I need to try and speed up my farming though and I really do need to jump into the lane for a few ganks.

Sitting in the jungle is just so easy and there's usually little to worry about since i'm in the lower bracket. So i'm trying to shake the bad habbits now before I -maybe- get into higher brackets.

Thanks all for the answers.

sometimes I get dips in frame rate when nothing special is going on, it happens infrequently and I have no idea why. Other then that its usually 50-60 fps.

It didn't happen before the Chaos Knight CM enabled patch.

I keep getting matched with people who just auto attack creeps in the lane all the time. It doesn't seem to matter if I tell them not to, so now I just try to get all the last hits I can if it happens.

When I was getting started out everyone recommended Tidehunter but I just couldn't get into him, he felt fragile and died easily. it turned me off of melee heroes almost entirely for a while, but I gave Axe a try last week and felt much better.

Sorry, i know you just said felt but he's easily one of the tankiest heroes in the game: he has really good strenght growth coupled with Kraken Shell which lets you at least drop an ultimate every fight even if you're getting focused.
