As far as the maps go I think it would be cool if they implemented a seasonal version of the current map that rotates automatically based on the current season of the server location you are playing in

Eg: on NA servers right now it would be fall, there green trees could be turning brown, there could be jack o lanterns placed on spots like the secret shop and the base walls and like scarecrows on the high ground at the entrance to Roshan pit.

Then December 1st the game automatically switches to a winter version, snow on the trees and ground, paths through the snow where the creeps traditionally go, cruelly made snowmen at dire ss, finely crafted snowmen at radiant ss, etc..

And the same for spring and summer, then the map would be the same but feel fresh and new throughout the year, no need to relearn or balance new maps but visually it would be pleasing for the players to play on a new tileset

Yes we don't change the monopoly board, but there are 10000 interations of it.

That is fine, but there is a number of wins where you can't have a realistic mmr rate yet. I have had 1-50 win teams vs 300-500. Ok, these guys could have 45% wins and low "elo", the 20 win guy could be in 60% (I had a decent % of wins in my first 40 matches or so just because I read guides and practiced with bots), it is still a bad matchup 90% of the time because players with 25 wins don't even have a basic grip on the game unless smurfs that can't be many today that access to the game is restricted.

It's not the same that matching 300 wins vs 1000.

I have had some of these matches a couple days and you could see that the skill difference was huge. The games were not funny for either teams, I remember once even a guy in the other team said it was ridiculous in all chat.
Well, commonly, matchmaking algorithms assign each player a rating and some sort of confidence interval. This is the degree of belief the algorithm has that your rating is correct. Usually people who have a low amount of games played or erratic win/loss patterns (win against a highly rated opponent, lose against a low rated opponent and so on) will have a big confidence interval. That means, people with a low number of wins are more likely to be matched badly. The more wins you have, the more likely it is you are matched correctly because the algorithm knows more about your skill level.

I agree that people with 1-50 wins are usually not supposed to be matched up against people with hundreds of games played, but those are pretty common problems that occur in any kind of matchmaking. There's a lot of other variables as well, for example time of day (bigger pool of players means faster matchmaking, means less expanding of search range) or mode (I've found that in CM, the skill level is noticeably higher than in AP, for example). It's a hard problem and there are no easy solutions. Especially in Dota, where you have 5 player teams and ideally want to rate each player individually for each of his games, but how do you do that with an extremely complex game like Dota? You can't just do stuff like take the K/D/A of a player to influence the rating, for example. What this will end up doing is punish supports (especially in losing teams) and reward players who play Zeus or Spectre a lot.

why only one map?

A few reasons:
The game has been balanced around that one map for about 5-6 years and it's been polished and refined continually.
It was cumbersome to keep up to date with more than one map in the WC3 system of custom maps. If you had more than one Dota map, you'd have to download each map individually and place them into your maps folder every time a new release came out.
The variance in game play comes from different heroes and hero combinations, not from different maps
And most of all: IceFrog never made another map.

Ugh... One of those days. -___- just can't get a good game in. One two out of 5 or 6 even.

Hey man, I lost every single match last thursday, friday, saturday. I think that was almost 20 games and brought my losses to pairity with my wins. :(

Sunday, Monday I won every match though :)

I got stuck playing hard support in every match last night, except the one game I picked Spirit Breaker first, then ended up with 3 other carries being picked and I had to solo suicide lane, got zero farm. Absolutely tired of pub games with 4 carries.

Playing Pugna in solo queue is the most frustrating thing. If team comp is bad you're worthless, if the enemy wants you to die you will die horribly.

The same goes for many squishy heroes unfortunately. Some fun heroes are just unwise to pick in solo queue because you can get targeted and taken out so easily. Good pub heroes are the versatile ones that are also a bit beefy or have a built-in escape mechanism.

Sand King is probably the best solo queue hero I can think of. You can carry your team with clever SK play. You're also generally safe from tower dives. In solo queues your team will almost never TP to a teammate that's being tower dove.

My game just now:
Opponents: 4 dudes with Chinese characters and a lucky motherfucker who got matched up with them. Lion, Lich, ES, Juggs and Slar
My team: RU player who instapicks BH, random Naga, Invoker (who demands mid), Tide and myself (drow)

Can you guess who won? :P I don't know why MM will actually match up 5 random solo queuers against a 4+1 queue. That just seems like it's wasting everyone's time. The chance that you actually get 5 players who can put up a legitimate contest against 4 dudes who coordinate their team, run a tri-lane, etc. is like one in ten. On the balance of probabilities, it's a guaranteed shit-fest for everyone involved.

The only benefit from games like those is that you have to really focus and improve your map awareness, your gank sense, your last hitting, spacing, everything.

Hurts to see how poorly ex-mouz performs.

It's not a new thing either...it always seems to be either it's a close game that they win, or they lose while being massacred.

EDIT : NVM, looks a bit better now. I forgot about the "Let Black farms for 30 minutes" strategy.

I wouldn't play a different Dota map.

I would, however, totally play LOD or 6v6 modes. (For those not familiar: LOD is where you choose a base hero with their stat gains, animations, and cast times, and then you take any combination of skills from any of the heroes in the game. So, for instance, you could do something like Ursa Overpower/Sniper Range/Weaver Shukuchi/Enchantress Ultimate. My personal favorite combination was Undying Tomb/KOTL Chakra/Nature's Prophet Teleport/Rearm. MASS TOMBSTONES BABY).

Why stop at 6v6, I think 8v8 would be stupid fun. You would have to also play with the XP values though, and maybe give it easy mode passive gold.

It's the first game they lost. Indeed they are doing some interesting strategies. In
this last one they did some smart split pushing, using weaver and naga + wisp skills.

That's a great idea. It means that the basic layout stays the same but it just has some visual flourishes to keep things from getting stale.

They'd probably end up selling the seasonal maps as another form of micro-transaction but, even then, it'd be nice to have the variety.

I do wonder why Silencer isn't picked more, is it because people keep trying to make him play as a support?

because he's an uber farm dependant carry with no escape mech that gets easily picked off that cannot be played as a support because he has no stun and kotl does a better job of aoe harass that isn't as strong a solo mid presence as od and doesn't scale as hard either compared to od who does more pure dmg with his orb then silencer that's only a situational pickup against combo casters like puck or bkb casters like enigma did I mention he has no hp or ms and dies really easily i mean like almost any roamer can kill him.

would run outta breath trying to read this.

hoping to get some actual games in as I havent played for like 2 weeks due to a nasty flu :(

best build for silencer:

midas
shadow blade
sheep

gg no re, it's empirically proven to be good
(from a sample of four games I've seen it in, it has won three)

What's the best way to convince your team to end the game faster when you have the advantage? Played a game last night where we were on top by quite a bit in the early - mid game which gave our team a false sense of security (opposing team had Mirana/Riki/Spectre whereas I as BH and Naga were carrying). Anyways, we let the game drag on and they basically all get farmed past the 40 and well into the hour mark as the rest of my time decide the best way to punish them is to farm in all different quadrants of the map and get picked off one by one repeatedly. Thankfully we still win because we get our shit together and team fight but this all could've been avoided had we just ended the game earlier.

Buy a smoke. Everyone gets excited when you smoke up and will nearly always follow whoever bought it. Buy one and then shepherd your team into doing whatever you want.

Tried that before....doesn't seem to work in my experience....people just want to farm up their items...

"Hey guys let's smoke gank, got a smoke.."
"hold on I'm 1300g from getting my BKB"

Wait, they actually charge to spectate some of these games?

Only from in-game, they introduced tickets for tournaments before the international 2. You can still watch these games for free on streaming. Either way, the tickets are pretty cheap and the tournament organizers get a cut of the profits.

I have the same damn problem. My friends and I will absolutely destroy early/mid and then get complacent and sit around farming or twiddling their thumbs for 20 minutes until the other team's carries are farmed like mad. It's rather annoying because they love playing carries, so I always end up as hard support on our team and I can't do much when they decide to go out way too far in lanes and try to farm and die one by one for the rest of the game until we eventually get throned. So frustrating, I've lost the majority of my recent games thanks to that crap.

Tobi is owned.tv right? Why the hell can I never fast forward through their VODs, I have to watch them from the very beginning every time. It glitched out and stopped loading halfway through Na'Vi vs. Empire game 1, and when I refreshed, I couldn't move back to my spot.

The weird thing is tobis vods used to work perfect for me. But something changed in the last month and I get the same crap with fast forwarding and rewinding. YouTube it all the way.
