She is known as the Naga Siren but she is Slithice the Slithereen. "No Slithereen May Fail," etc.

Naga isn't a race in Dota2 but is still an apt description of what she is, a serpent-like creature.

Looks like we have proven the Slithereen have a gross sexual dimorphism then. Valve probably wanted to avoid any tempting fan fiction from being made.

Might have something to do with Slardar being designed far earlier than Naga was. Or maybe the Slithereen come in a much wider variety of looks and we can't really make judgments by only seeing two of their entire species. I like both designs, even if they are pretty different.

Slardar is one of the worst looking heros in the game, next to Warlock. It's comical seeing Slardar and Slark's potraits next to each other in the game, the level of difference in the detail is massive.

Man, Warcraft 3 was an ugly game.

Pretty much all 3D games until recently will age very badly. I expect games with solid art direction like TF2 and Okami to farewell, but other than that 3D will finally shine next-gen. Dota 2 will probably age well based on its graphics.

He could use some new textures and a fix-up for sure, but I like the overall design concept. He's still an early hero who doesn't need a complete redesign like Vengeful Spirit does.

I was expecting them to go back and redesign some of the early heroes, but now that items are being released for them still, I'm beginning to think that's less likely. They might just redo some textures to make them look better though.

What ever happened to the detailed Vengeful Spirit redesign? I was hoping to have most of the heroes worked over like that.

Dragon Knight's ult could also use some higher res textures. The model as a whole looks terrible compared to jakiro.

Slardar lost a lot of badass points from wc3 to dota 2, same deal with beastmaster.

I win Diretide.

How the hell do you get that?

Really really hope the winners are comprised of concepts for heroes without any items out there already.

I feel right at home with Diretide, I'll miss it, but it certainly gives me motivation to play human games from now on.
Same.

I wish valve make this game mode permanent, without the Raid and the ridiculous item drop. Having the item drops like the normal game mode is fine imo.

Are the treasure chests worth anything? I have like 20 of them that I will probably never open, but I wouldn't mind getting some items out of them if I could.

You might trade 8-10 of them for a common if you're lucky.

Unless it's an even chest, those might be worth more depending.

How common were items in tf2 that you could only obtain via drops or trading? I.e non-purchasable items, like Sven's commander set in dota 2.

Wow...Slark is REALLY fun! I usually prefer agility hero's and this guy is definitely my style. Possibly one of my favorite hero's now just after one game!

dire tide is so awful that they have to give people 2 items per game to get more than 10 people playing it. It would be like GAF IHL when people realized they weren't getting items.

I wish it were 2 items per game. It's more like 1 item per game and a 50/50 chance at a second one. Normal games are more fun but they're rarely as relaxing.

So a few fellow TF2-Gaffers convinced me to try out Dota 2, and I got hooked up with an invite (thanks again Rickenslacker!) and even a little coaching (thanks Mr. Waddles!). I've only played a couple bot matches, and I'm still struggling to get comfortable with the controls and stuff. The most frustrating thing to get used to is definitely the camera. It feels like I'm wrestling with it the whole time. I did a Google search and apparently a lot of new players have the same gripe, and I saw that if you double-click your player (or the hotkey to select yourself) it pans the camera to center on you. So that should help; I'll try it out when I play tonight.

I'm not completely sold on the game yet — especially since my first and only other MOBA was SMITE, which has a much more forgiving WoW-style camera view — but I'll keep trying.

Bind "Select Hero" to a key.

Double tap key to center.

Double tap and hold to follow.

Although really, you should learn to use the camera to increase your vision range by shifting it around, it's a pretty basic skill in DOTA/similar games, just like it is in RTS.

Thanks for the tip. I'll probably bind it to my space bar.

And yeah, I hope I'll eventually get used to it and learn how to fully utilize the camera, but I'm not used to this style of game at all — I've never played a RTS and, as I mentioned earlier, SMITE is the only other MOBA I've played (if you don't count the 1 game of LoL I played before quitting).

That was a bit of a run on sentence.

Stick with it, it will click and watch a few youtube videos, it was a catalyst for me.

PS: Hit spacebar to centre you cam to your hero.

Learn Dota 2 Season 1 - They are short, watch the first few, trust me.

Thanks! I've already watched a few videos, and they definitely helped. I watched these 3 beginner videos:

Dota 2: A Complete Beginner's Guide
Dota 2 Showcase Intro: Beginner's Guide to Dota 2
Tutorial: How to Play DOTA2 In 4 Minutes (HQ)

And Mr. Waddles told me that Skeleton King is a great beginner hero, and I really like him. It's nice to only have 1 active ability for now. So I watched this SK guide:

Dota 2 Guide : Skeleton King

The guides were all very helpful, but still, there's no shortcuts to getting the "feel" for the game. And that's what I majorly lack right now. I'll probably be playing with bots for a long time. Last-hitting is really hard.

create an autoexec.cfg and add these lines

bind space "+camera"
alias +camera "+dota_camera_follow;+dota_camera_follow"
alias -camera "-dota_camera_follow"

alias "range" "range1"
alias "range1" "dota_range_display 1200;alias range range2"
alias "range2" "dota_range_display 0;alias range range1"

bind kp_5 "range"

First one makes it so space bar will first go to center of the map, second tap of space bar will center on your hero. Also if someone pings the map hitting spacebar will put camera on the ping.

Second command ads a xp/gold range circle toggle. Press 5 on the numbers pad on your keyboard to toggle it on and off.

Drop the autoexec.cfg in this folder. Steam> steamapps> common > dota2 beta > dota > cfg

Not in the first config folder in the dota 2 beta root directory, but in the cfg folder as shown above.

Wow that cfg sounds like it'll be really helpful. Thanks!

I enjoyed Diretide - don't see why it got ragged on. Got me playing Dota again and was fairly easy to win (pick more broken heroes than the other team). The item drops helped, and I got a chance to play heroes I usually don't, so that was nice too
