Dota 2 Beta Thread 3: Gunnar Optiks Required [Faster Loading]

I just got around to playing Dota 2 the other day, having been an avid fan for 4+ years of the original. And unfortunately it seems that I will be unable to play this, much as I was unable to get accustomed to HoN.

It is quite bizarre, but as with HoN I simply find the entire game way too weird. Everything looks wrong, the controls just 'feel' terrible, it never seems as though I am in control of what is going on. There are a number of smaller frustrations, but in the end no matter what I will not be able to play this game so long as these problems remain. Incidentally I had no trouble adapting to LoL, but as that game is currently unplayable for me I have no choice but to continue with Dota 2. Any other long-time players of Dota have any trouble adapting?

Force staff is the only way to build BloodSeeker. Survivability and damage!
 
Started playing a few months ago after leaving Warcraft Dota for a while. I find the community to be leagues better. Very few leavers and I can count on my fingers the number of times I've been flamed, or even seen flaming.

Can you give some examples of why you think Dota 2 is unplayable for you and why the controls feel terrible?
Can't phantom what you mean at this point to be honest...

I'm not a dota veteran or dedicated LoL player, but if there's one of the MOBA's that feels polished at this moment, it's DOTA 2 IMO. Even if it's still a beta...

The switch from one to another depends on the person, really. I played the original for years, couldn't enjoy LOL, Hon I clicked with instantly and Dota 2 took me a few days to grow accustomed to.

I played Dota from 2004 to 2008/09. Played my first game of Dota 2 about two weeks ago and went 14-2 with Drow. Lol so no, I haven't had much issues adapting.

The only thing that bothers me is that the art style seems to have taken a step back though that's to be expected as WC3's overall art style is just incredible to begin with. However, Dota 2's considerably more limited color palette is also tricky to deal with as heroes are not as instantly recognizable and distinctive as they were in Dota 1.
 
Argh, I just can't deal with this. Everything is wrong, this is horrific. It is simply painful to me to try and play this. I have no idea what to do.

Since a Gaffer gave me the invite to Dota 2, I feel compelled to play it further. I hope I can adjust with additional play, but we shall see.

The colors are slightly washed out. It has that source engine look where the reds are never quite red, the blues are never quite blue, etc.

That said I disagree with his point - I think it's superior in style to War3, not just in fidelity.

I don't think this has anything to do with the art style or with the color palette, I would even say it's darn easy to instantly recognize each individual hero. Especially because each has a distinctive look, feel and sound to him/her/it. Same goes for pretty much all the abilities the different heroes have...

You are a strange person. I played lots of WC3 back in the day(not Dota I admit) and it's the complete opposite for me. When I watch Dota1 matches online, all heroes seem like a big pile of polygons, that are barely distuingishable. Also it's much darker than Dota 2.

What is wrong? All mechanics are the same as in Dota1. A literal copy of the game. Just the graphics are more shiny.

The WC3 I remember in my head is awesome. The Dota 1 I watch nowadays on streams occasionally is dark, indistinct, and kind've of an eyesore.

My team getting stomped by Drow is becoming common place now. Why did they buff her? For the comp scene? Just so you can maybe see Drow MAYBE in one comp game I have to sit through match after match of her shooting manta blades at me after ten minutes. Not to say I'm not making mistakes at Dota, but I can only shake my head when I see "DOMINATING" on the top of my screen five minutes into the game. The matchmaking gods have cursed me. I went ten victories out of last twelve, then Diretide, now I think two victories out of last ten.

Nope. I just found out how to check my game history and it's 16-3 as a matter of fact and not 14-2. Lol. I was always good with the Drow. And she seems to be a lot more powerful in Dota 2 than 1. The innate agility gain seems to be a lot higher than before. I haven't looked into whether this is true or not though. Could be just my imagination.

Drow got buffed in a recent patch. (Patches count for both Dota 1 and 2)

It may be rare, but some people apparently feel this way. When I played DOTA 2 a couple of months ago, I felt it was a bit muted/washed out, I didn't really like the art style, and I didn't really like the characters. I think one or two of my friends felt the same way, and one is an artist, but I'm not sure if it was an art style/contrast thing or just that they didn't like the characters themselves.

I recognize that a ton of people obviously do like the game, but I think the art/color/graphical effect can turn some people off.
 
I recently owned a Drow mid with a Bloodseeker, dunno if he's a good counter or the Drow was just bad, but was fun seeing how she silenced me as I ran to her already silenced :D

I picked Slardar and Sven in two matches recently just to counter her. I know she's a fairly easy hero to counter, I mean you just stun her and go to town. But she can still wreck if your team is caught off-guard. I didn't do so well with Slardar, but did ok considering she was crazy fed so early. I did pretty well with Sven, but my team couldn't do anything to capitalize and made so many random dumb mistakes. I know it's a lame thing to blame your team, BUT...

There was even a recent match where the Drow went 6-6 and still won. Even mediocrity cannot stop her!

I know there's a lot scarier heroes, but it just seemed like out of the blue since Diretide Drow has been wrecking me. I miss the good ol' days of being crushed by Lycan... wait maybe not.

I play with 3 girls who are all artists and they love the art style. Even made some fan art because of how much they love the characters.

Picking gankers is the best way to counter her if youre solo queuing. Pudge bh ns etc. But yeah its still tough, thats why she's good.

Flaming seems to get worse the more games you've played. During my first 200 or so games the flaming didn't seem bad at all. I have ~800 matches played at this point, and flaming happens pretty much every game. A lot of assholes play this game, just something one has to accept. The game itself is too much fun for me to care.

Pudge is almost guaranteed to lose mid against any competent enemy mid. The reason he goes there is because he wants the Runes and levels ASAP, and he can turn the lost mid into won sidelanes once he starts ganking.

Now you're just overdoing it, come on. Practically the whole competitive scene has switched from WC3 Dota to Dota 2. And they are very picky when it comes to mechanics, playability, etc.

In fact, I'm glad that with Valve's Dota, there's very littleof the "I'm a purist and can't stand the new stuff", like you saw with Counterstrike 1.6 and later versions.

Just play it for a week and then decide to keep playing or not. There are legacy keys in the options for old time dota players and configs out there that make the game control easier (especially with the courier).

Invites are super super common now so the person who gave you one probably won't regret it at all. (On the other hand I still hate the fact that one of my online friends played like 3 games and quit last september when an invite could have fetched you quite a bit of cash).

I've been having trouble convincing people that he can be played as a viable carry now (placed in safe lane with a babysitter). Some dude flipped his top on me when I told him that sven isn't a support. He may have been a few versions back but he'd be a waste as a support now. Early armlet/bkb/mask is so good on him.

Well that's because Dota2 is as close to an exact port as you can get. 1.6 to source to GO are all mechanically different games in many ways.

Stay with it. Most of my friends were the same as you, but are now loving the game. I guess you'll get used to it after a while.

They do sometimes complain though, there are things that were inadvertently changed during the port. Some that did were actually listed as bugs, and Valve changed them back to more resemble how it was during the original Dota.

Nearest example of this was Jakiro's ice breath.
