If you're decent at Dota then just queue with people who've played a decent amount of Dota2 and you'll get pulled into a better bracket.

There actually have been a good number of reports that the system will can identify experienced people and quickly put them in the proper bracket. People try to make smurf accounts only to get placed back into high/very high in under 10 games.

There are also clear examples of false positives though, like people with 10 games who don't know what they are doing matched with people who have played ~500 games, because the system overestimated how good they are for some reason.

The point I'm trying to make is you don't actually need to queue with friends to get into a proper bracket.

There is NO WAY there won't be a hero in tonights update. NO. WAY.

lol no. Valve takes as much time as they can want, the most feasible would be next week with the christmas update and medusa, after that we'll just have bug fixes for maybe a month and half.

How do you know what your mmr pool is? Are you guys just guessing/flattering yourselves?

Recent games and filter your name + very high/high/normal to see where your games are.

You can also look at what page in the spec tab your games are on.
It says that it's sorted by average skill (hidden mmr~) in the game, but I think there is some weight on spectators too as I've seen games move upwards/downwards before when a high number of spectators have joined.
Obviously this isn't an exceptionally convenient if you're not on the earlier pages :p

Calling it:

Christmas update will have Medusa, Timbersaw, Bristleback, 6.77 balance changes, Polycount cosmetics, Eultide and a Santa hat for Pudge.

It's going to be awesome. :)

DAMN IT! Now Valve is just going to shut down the Dota 2 servers for good. Thanks a fucking lot, Archie. :/

What are GAF's opinions on Chaos Knight and Clinkz? I played them last night and I thought both were very fun.

I don't know if this is what happened to me, but I've had a couple games where my teammates were much more experienced than I was. I'm level 1 so I figured I'd be paired with other low levels, but it was obvious some of these people knew what they were doing.

Both are amazing and some of the best mm carries.
It's interesting how they are some of the best gankers in the game, but do it in completely different ways.
Clinkz solo and getting early farm until the orchid, then just start picking people off.
With CK you can dominate the lane and then just dive however you want later.

It seems like people have a hard time playing CK properly though, which I usually attribute to buying the wrong items. Personally I just like getting treads, drum and bkb and start picking people off and force fights (and sometimes a bottle depending on what kind of game it develops to)

If you want to I can give you a more thorough analysis later but here is my opinion on your first fifteen minutes:
Watch your positioning. - Sometimes you end up easily behind enemies or inbetween when you should have stayed with your lane partner.

Venge is a support - if no one else on your team buys courier, please do it for the sake of your team. This is true even when you do not play support. If in a pub game no one buys courier, do it yourself. That thing is essential.

Don't autoattack - You attack far too much and push the lane towards the enemy line. Focus on lasthitting. When paired with a carry, focus on denying and harrassing the enemy heroes, let the carry get the lasthits.

Don't waste your spells - Sometimes you will cast Magic Missile without any follow up. Sure it does nice damage, but the beauty about a Slardar - Venge lane is, that you can easily chainstun an enemy. Use spells when going for kills.

Watch what your lanepartner is doing - early in the game Slardar got killed even though you could have saved him with a stun. You just autoattacked and he died. Then 2 times, he was chasing an enemy with low health but you attacked creeps or the other enemy hero with full health. This brings me to my next point:

Focus - Sometimes when there are more than 2 heroes on screen, you will stand there doing nothing because you don't know who to attack or what spells to cast. Always attack the hero that your partner is attack first and foremost. If you think it will save your life cast Magic Missile on the other hero and run, don't attack him.

CAMERA WORK - This may be the point where you need to work on the most. More than 1 time Riki jumped on you (without stealth) and you noticed to late. Your camera is too rigid. When in lane and NOT autoattacking, but issuing a lot of move commands, always try to have the camera NOT centered at your hero, but just so, that he touches the bottom (top) end of the screen. (depending on your lane) You want to have the most vision possible because a lot of spells have a huge range, and half a monitor isn't enough. At 14:30 your camera is looking at woods, while you attack a tower and dive Riki. I couldn't even clearly see your hero, he was just a blip at the right end of the screen. Your screen contained about 30% useful information and the rest was empty woods.

Tips:
Buy sentry wards when in lane against Riki and BH. Especially BH can go invis from lvl 1 and with your 2 stuns and a sentry wards killing him would be very easy.

Don't go tranquil boots on venge when you have mana issues. Yeah your health was low, but a salve or TP back to base can solve that. It can't solve your mana issues though. Clarities lose their potency pretty soon, so in this case go mana boots. It's also beneficial for your team. Lich doesn't need mana boots because he can simply eat creeps, but most other casters don't have such luxury.

That's it for now, tell me if I said something useful ^^

Thank you for these tips. At this point in my game everything is useful to me. I do know that my camera work is my biggest area for improvement. I think I have certainly improved a bit but admittedly there is still work to be done. I'm not quite 'comfortable' with the camera controls. Yet. This is my first time playing a game like this and I think I'm around 40 hours played at this point. Hopefully I will get better naturally.

Mana Boots would have certainly been the better option here in retrospect. I'm so used to playing with lich and not having to deal with Mana issues that I was quite off put once I moved to a different hero.

Basically the reason I use my spells is to 'harass' the other hero's in the beginning of the game then once the 'lane phase' is over I try to only use my spells in team fight situations.

Again I appreciate any and all feedback so thanks for taking the time to drop me yours.

Yeah, you don't want to do that with a high-mana stun-nuke like Venge's ability. Even in the laning phase you want to save it for if you need to escape or if the opportunity presents itself for you and your lane partner to use it to get a kill. I had a Sven doing the same thing in lane last night, he kept using his gauntlet but because it wasn't followed up with a kill attempt his opponents just used some regen and he was out half his mana and in danger if they decided to go for a gank.

Put more concisely: even in laning you want to save your spells for actual fights. Especially as a ranged hero like Venge harass using right-click attack instead, you do a lot more damage than you might expect.

Thanks for the info. I saw the Orchid in Clinkz's suggested items; why is it so important for him?

I'm just glad to have finally found an agility hero that I enjoy.

Opening a gank with Orchid not only silences them so its hard to fight back, but Clinkz deals so much damage so quickly that you can open with Orchid, pop Q and deal a tone of damage, and then if things look bad and you suddenly need to escape you can go invisible and run and you still have a chance of killing or severely weakening them thanks to Orchid's extra damage effect.

Also silence effects are always good in teamfights.

Thank you this makes sense, in retrospect. I don't have the near unlimited mana that I could grab with lich to continue using my nuke to harass people.

Well, there's a couple of reasons.
Clinkz needs mana regen, searing arrows (orb) and death pact take a lot of mana, and you'll be using these skills.
The extra damage is also good, both from the +dmg and the debuff.
Lastly, as he doesn't have any slows/disables you wouldn't likely get any pick offs if you didn't have the silence and the damage buff. You're very susceptible to cc.

What you do is silence+strafe and right click the opponent with the orb on lone targets.

And in addition to that some other stuff; the usual build is boots->aquila->orchid->power treads and then build both a bkb and crit in the order you think would be better. After that skadi is pretty good as it stacks with the orb. You probably want to get the parts for the oblivion staffs in the side shop whenever you can as the added mana regen is important.
Skill wise you usually see wind walk on lvl 1 and then max the orb and getting ww/death pact after that. However in some cases one rank of strafe when you're lvl 4 might be useful, like when you're in a 1v1 lane situation and would be able to get kills on the lane.

Remember to manually cast the orb when harassing to not draw aggro !

Vengeful Spirit is actually one of my favorite supports in the game, since she's so item independent and her right-click damage is so large, even in the early game. You can set up some crazy teamfights with her abilities.

I gotta go with Lina or Lion, you can wreck shit with those two. Also Veno can really dominate early-mid game.

Well my absolute favorite is Shadow Shaman, he just has such versatility. My favorite supports list probably looks something like:
Shadow Shaman
Vengeful Spirit
Disruptor
Ogre Magi
Venomancer
All the others

So far as a new player I would say dazzle is my favorite support. His normal abilities together with magic wand, mek, arcane boots, and euls/scythe/whatever else you have make him one of the first heroes that will have a new player dancing his fingers around the keyboard like it was a piano.

Question about my summoned monsters that die. Do I have to reset my control groups for them each time they are summoned ex. Lyman's wolves?

Yeah, Dazzle's pretty good. He and Omniknight feel pretty similar actually, and I do pick them on occasion if I really want to play the ultra-hard "do absolutly nothing else ever" support.

Lycan wolves: no.
Edit(thanks hylian):
Natures Profit: no
Brood: no

Ench and Chen's creeps: Yes

As long as you don't set that control group for something else, nope, they stay the same. This also works for selecting units of the same type.

Let's say you are playing Broodmother and select yourself, all your spiderlings, and spiderites and set it to control group 1. If you hit 1 after you produce more spiderlings and spiderites, it gets the new ones too! This works with Nature's Prophet's Treants and a bunch of other stuff too, however the unit has to be the same type, so it won't work for Chen or Enchantress unless all the creeps you have are the same. If you have seperate groups of the same unit, just put them on seperate control groups and you won't cross select the other when you don't want to. This is useful if you're Nature's Prophet, you TP, Treants, set them to push, TP somewhere else, more treants, set those to push that lane, all without interrupting the treants on the other lane.

Pfft, typical no-micro DOTA/ARTS/MOBA players...
;p
Use shift+control group to add the creeps to the proper control group and this won't happen.

Brood is weird as hell though, higher ranks of spiders won't be added into the same control group, so you gotta do it when you skill up the spell.

Thanks guys, cleared that right up. Clinkz is pretty squishy so I'm probably gonna feed my first few games with him. But I just really like his kit.
