Dragon Ball Super |OT| 28 Episodes Later

Something as big as Dragon Ball Z deserves better treatment.

Funimation would be better off hiring its own animation studio. I'm sure it wouldn't be hard to find a team who give a shit about producing quality work.

LOL from what I read from former employees Funimation is a generally mismanaged and underfunded company. They barely have enough money to branch away from their small circle of regular voice actors let alone set up an animation studio.

Also it's easy to shit on GT, but that looks spot on like DBZ

Maybe Super had one or two episodes with better animation / drawings, but if the price to pay is 10 episodes that look like utter shit, then it's a LOSE LOSE situation.

I'd rather have slower but consistent fights like GT. Than one half decent episode and then pure shit for two months.

Just no :

GT looks nice in those gifs. I don't think DB Super has ever looked good, and I blame the art design they went with. Everything looks so shiny and weird. :[

2) HE said last episode was on par with the average Z/GT episode. (and no it's not, it's worse than anything in GT)
And you went along with it.

Also, I'd easily take this episode's inconsistent animation over parts of the Baby fight were they were seemingly too lazy to actually animate a battle. Some people complained about the amount of talking in this episode, but if you rewatch SSJ4 Goku vs Giant Monkey Baby it seems like they were always attempting to find excuses to avoid making them actually move.

In the end, that resulted in more consistently on model animation, but it was still pretty cheap, like scrolling a still picture over a background to show Goku flying, or a scene with several camera cuts between Goku and Baby talking, where every shot of Goku is identical and only shows his mouth flapping.

He didn't say "hey the entirety of Super, including back when it didn't suck entire monkey balls, sure is worse than the average Z and GT episode".

Eh. Have we forgotten episode 5 already? Super has been fairly inconsistent. This wasn't even its lowest low.

And you went along with it.

That feels like an extremely antagonistic answer.

Why weren't you talking to him ? Why single me out ? It wasn't obvious that I was using the terms he was using ? Did I have to specify "So Z and Gt on average, despite Gt not being on Z's level, were still both above that last episode of Dragon Ball Super" ?

The fun part is where you ignore, that, we were talking about last episode, and that, even if I implied that Z and GT were the same (and I wasn't), it wouldn't matter, because the point I was making was still valid, when compared to last episode ...

But hey hopefully this dancing Trunks is gonna cheer you up buddy.

Feel better.

But this is ugly, lazy, AND not on model ... How is this better ?! The small amount of animation it has is all smudged out with photoshop D: . The choregraphy are also a total disgrace, it's not just ugly the storyboard is worse than GT at times. And the special effects cheapen the whole thing even more.

Episode 5 was not a finished episode (we had the info a long time ago posted on this very thread multiple times). This is a finished episode. So it ironically is the worst action episode Super has had yet.

That purple guy is the most interesting of the new crew. I would say Robo, but like people have been saying, he'll probably just be a way to show off Nipple Man's powers if the lineup means anything.

Even this episode had some good shots though... it just wasn't when things were moving... aside from the SSJ Blue transformation at the end, which looked great.

You could just have said "Even GT looked better on average".

Eh, what kills the choreography here is exactly the stiff animation though. Moments like Freeza's distraction and surprise attack against Goku would look pretty good if it weren't for the weird flow the scene has.

Goku actually pulling a hold to counter Freeza's attack is one of the rare moments where Toei remembers that he's a trained fighter rather than just a brawler.

Whether it was officially incomplete or not only changes whether it'll be retouched later. It's clear that the animation supervisor for this episode was unable to actually work on a lot of the episode, considering how inconsistent the designs are from one shot to the next, even some close up stills.

Maybe resurrecting this franchise was a bad idea after all. Terrible art and drawing, slow, boring pacing, weak fighting animations, uninspired story idea, mediocre music.

DBS has been super disappointing for me, as a fan of DB, DBZ and yes, I even like DB GT.

Oi. Yeah, this episode really was painful, just when I thought the quality was starting to pick up. A lot of the animation seemed like it was done as cheaply as possible.

It also irritates me that the new way to show ever more ridiculous levels of power is the two opponents barely moving, but holding each other, and then something blows up around them just because of how powerful they are. Such lazy fight choreography.

They always are in this medium, especially when you consider the stakes.

The Universe 7 team losing would actually be great though, if they have further arcs planned. Earth continues basically without changes, but, for our main cast, no more being close friends with the North Kai or Supreme Kai, no more Namek DBs. Suddenly many of the show's safety nets just disappear, leaving only the old set of Dragonballs.

Look, this is the biggest anime brand in the world. There is NO reason why it should be so poorly produced. NONE.
Toei is absolutely pathetic for what they've done to Dragon Ball and One Piece.

Is there any anime that Toei produces now that has consistently good animation?

Kyousougiga is from only a couple of years ago. It was a one cour show and had an extremely long production schedule though, and they reused most of the OVA footage for the tv show, unlike here.

If only a studio like Madhouse had the rights ;-;

I dream of the day that Shueisha decides to not work with Toei on Dragon Ball anymore.
It'll never happen, but man that would be great.

What exactly would it take for Toei to lose the Dragon Ball license?

It's really weird that they haven't reused a single bit of animation from BoG or F.

At this point? Nothing. Toei would never let the license slip through their fingers, same with one piece.

I've just seen that the number for Dragonball's merchandising doubled and overall licensing revenue tripled in the last 6 months, surpassing One Piece in Bandai's financial report. So, yes, Toei likely won't be going anywhere. Remember, Kai got initially canceled due to low merchandising sales, so I guess Toei will attempt to keep Super around for a while now...

So will you be boycotting this show? :)

I saw some recent stuff that was SSJB Goku, SSJB Vegeta, Piccolo and... SSJ2 Gohan from the Cell games. :V

Dragon ball super episode 21
Almost everything....they're doing almost everything right, I was letting a few episodes build up over the course of like 2 months because of this arc in which they seem to dont be changing enough despite the few changes they made, but episode 21 has literally became a game changer, they're actually going back and applying fixes and changes to things the movie probably didnt think or couldnt cover, even more they're kinda sorta going by toriyama's original plan to make the 2 guys much stronger than ginyu force.

how former are these former employees, cause funi is in alot better position than they were 20 years ago

Hopefully they de-canonize Super. All this god nonsense, frieza coming back, terrible drawings, nerfing Gohan for no reason, and now the lame new fighters from the other universe it feels like they don't care at all.

That's not going to happen and all of the new villains are basically what one would expect from Toriyama.

The Freeza and Gohan stuff isn't even from Super specifically, it's from Dragon Ball Z Resurrection F.
I don't see now the Universe 6 characters are lame either, especially since we haven't seen a single one in action, nor do we know any of their personalities.

I was hoping they would de-canonize Battle of Gods and Resurrection of F. I don't really care for Beerus and Whis, and I find the idea of bringing back a past villain as another villain to be insipid, and Frieza wasn't even that interesting to begin with. Just a straight up one dimensional villain that is super evil and wants to destroy the world. Not that other Dragon Ball universe villains are that much different, but I digress.

Personally I think I'll just drop the show until something actually interesting happen to someone not named Goku or Vegeta.

Beerus is one of the best characters AT has given us.

His lazy personality and craving for food personality is only going to get him so far. Only worse when Whis shares the exact similar passion for food as Beerus.

Yeah, I mean for a super duper powerful entity, it was cute for awhile, but it's getting stale now. And his design is terrible.

Edit: Maybe I'm just an old man screaming at the cloud, or I forgot that Dragon Ball series has always been about shallow characters and villains and more about fights and occasional, random good stuff like the driving lesson episode.

is there even any point in watching Dragonball Super yet? I've only watched a few episodes, but I don't really think I want to watch any more at this point based on this thread lol.

Couldn't I just watch the movies, and then start when it comes back in January?

Hey don't bother explaining your opinion to me, I'll just disagree with anything you say. I just love me some Beerus shitting on everyone and humbling them.
