Some backstory regarding DQH development here.

- KT has been offering action game to SE for years (but SE was hesitating to go forward).
- Toukiden really changed SE's mind.
- KT was given 1.5 years for development.
- Horii thoroughly tested it for weekly basis.

..and more.
Just adding a bit more to this.
- It all started 5 years ago when Koei Tecmo's president Yoichi Erikawa (Kou Shibusawa) approached Yuji Horii to propose a "Dragon Quest action game" and Horii gave his consent.
- However, Square Enix hesitated because they didn't like the idea of a "Dragon Quest Musou/Warriors" game.
- Square Enix changed their mind in summer 2013 after seeing the success of Toukiden, in which players could fight gigantic monsters. They wanted elements from both Musou/Warriors (hordes of enemies) and Toukiden (gigantic monsters) incorporated.
- Square Enix set the target date to Feburary 2015. 1.5 years is an extremely short period, but producer Kenichi Ogasawara was unfazed and encouraged his team by saying "This is the only chance we have to make a Dragon Quest game at Koei Tecmo".
- Horii playtested every week and reminded the developers that they shouldn't be making a game that only suits them. "Easy Control Mode" was added for newbies who aren't familiar with games.
- Square Enix's Dragon Quest series producer Ryota Aomi praised Horii by saying "Even though Horii worked for more than 30 years in the games industry, he never forgets the gamers' point of view and that's great."

I actually got a bit stuck on a level last night and I wonder if anyone could provide some assistance?

It's quite late on in the game. I just beat the
white dragon and the shadow demon thing
and started on the next world. I equipped the correct party members and did the first stage (the escort one) fine. Stage two has you
protecting a barricade from incoming monsters. There's also a monster, a small red thing, manning a canon that you need to destroy every now and again (you can decommission the canon, but it comes back after a while.)

I seem to fail every time, after about 4 / 5 minutes or so. The life bar of the
barricade
isn't depleted. Why am I getting a game over?

Edit -
Never mind. I did it. Solution was to just get good.

Are the free battle areas for leveling up fast? I have generally avoided them but I am near the end game and am having a hard time with some battles. For those who have finished the game what level were you by the final chapter?

Yes for leveling up and collecting resources.
Just keep running around the map to get enemies to spawn as they will not spawn if you are in the same spot. Everything seems to have set trigger points. For example going to section A spawns in enemies back in section B. Section B will respawn section C. Section C will spawn section A. You can keep doing this till you notice that the enemies start to spawn less and less over time. But thats if you hang out there for a long ass time.

Sorry couldnt help you with that one as am not actually done with the game either, but think Im at the section right before that one. Got 3 other OTs I need to take care of at the same time thats why.

Thanks. I am stuck at a boss right after where checkeredknight is. Checking a strategy video I think I am just way under-leveled. I really like the game so far but I do find level progression is extremely slow through the story missions.

Its similar to dragon quest and you will need to go after metal slimes to level faster.

Go redo the desert stage the mid tier one. Its the one outside of the town in the small area with the quicksand. Metal slimes will spawn there. Use Terry (falcon sword) or Alena (bakuretsuken) as they do multiple hits which will help with actually hitting the metal slime due to its high evade rate.

Thanks for the tip! I don't think I have seen a metal slime in the standard battles aside from metal rider enemies.

they will show up as a sparkle on the minimap that place is good early on since its small and not too hard to chase them down

lots of panthers and trolls though so just keep that in mind

I played about three hours last night and it's excellent. It feels like Dragon Quest. While I enjoyed Hyrule Warriors, it felt more of a Dynasty Warriors game with the Zelda theme tacked on. This, IMO, feels closer to Dragon Quest than that did to Zelda. The pacing is brilliant and there have been so many features carried across from the mainline games. It's stunning too - the visuals looks great, I'm so pumped to finally be playing Dragon Quest in HD!

I really like the idea of the Monster Coins. It adds more depth to the battle system, allowing you to strategically place monsters to block off enemies. It feels like it's captured some elements from the Monsters spin-off series and it works really well. Easy to use and understand, even when it was explained in-game using Japanese (since I don't speak the language.)

Even so, I'm a big fan of the Japanese voice cast. At first I thought the main guy sounded a bit deeper than I'd expect, but he does a fantastic job. I'm glad it's getting an English dub, but I hope they leave the option for the Japanese cast in.

Also props for including so much amazing music, the original sound effects and just so much fan service. I'll be buying this again when it finally comes to Europe, no question about it! I uploaded a few videos, including a fight against Gigantes.

This is what I wanted to hear. I was pretty excited for Hyrule Warriors, but was left disappointed with how it just felt like a skin. Glad to hear this feels more original and true to form! Can't wait for the NA release! We have been deprived of new Dragon Quest games for long enough.

Thanks. Yeah I was just going to comment about the sparkle, I never noticed it before on the mini map. They show up a lot for me in the advanced level of that map. Thanks again

I didn't have too much trouble with that battle myself. Go for canons above all (an easy way to take them out is R1 + Square with Act, the lead male character.) The flame tornado will take a canon out in one go and you can trigger it from a few feet away, and it'll still hit.

Then, go for the sword guy. It's essential you dodge the ice attack, otherwise he'll freeze ya and just lay into you. When the white circle appears on the floor, roll the heck away! Build up tension as quickly as possible - make sure to keep switching characters and use the one that is the closest to filling their tension gauge. I used Act, Jessica, Yangus and Terry for this battle.

Finally, use electricity on the robot. R1 + Circle as Act casts lightning. You disable the robot for a limited time, so get some hits in and run away once he recovers. He'll spin around, so steer clear as best as possible!

Hope that helps. I'd also invest in some healing gems from the priest at the air ship (second option down after talking with her.) You can use them by holding R1 and pressing up on the dpad, just in case you didn't know.

I finally finished that battle this morning. It was definitely the most challenging fight of the game so far. Just curious what is your level checkeredknight?

BTW, I just tried my hand at the DLC battle. If you guys wanted a tough fight, you got one. I lasted a whole of 20 seconds, holy hell. He has two green knights with him too - really strong.

Psaro was an interesting fight. I defeated him around level 65 and i didin't really find him that hard. The main attack you need to watch out for is when he sucks you towards him you need to keep running then quickly dodge out of the circle when he stops. If not as you saw the attack is pretty strong and takes about 3/4 health from you. The green knights I just ignored and killed them when my special was full.

I'm still farming away for mini medals myself for the last few recipes. Apparently with the new DLC that just came out there is a Fairy Ring that gives a +2 bonus on mini medal drops. Apparently is broken and they drop very often, probably more than they should be. Not sure where the item is I don't see it anywhere unless I haven't been getting the DLC.

I've been putting together a guide over at Playstation Trophies for this game on the side if anyone is interested. It hasn't been made official yet (my original guide was just info put together that I was keeping track of as I unlocked stuff but they asked me to make it a guide which turned into so much work lol).

Dragon Quest Heroes Guide

Hopefully some info in it can help someone out. If anyone has anything they want to add please feel free to let me know it hasn't been submitted yet so I can still change whatever is needed.

Great work! The trophy guide and other tid bits are very handy. The only things I'd like translations of are the quest requirements. I understand the absolute mammoth task that would involve, though.

BTW, I just finished my first play through. Really liked the ending actually. The last boss fight was really cool. Took me 26 hours in total, but still lots to do.

Here is a Japanese site with rough quest translations. Follow the link and at the top in the middle choose Quest and rewards list. It'll tell you what you need to do but you will still have to look up the monster and item in your logs.

Japanese Dragon Quest info

I've completed all the quests now and I've thought about going through each quest and taking screenshots of the quest, items and enemies needed. That being said that is gonna take awhile. If the English version is the exact same though I should be able to put up the guide for that when it's released.

Glad you liked it, it's a really good game. Now you need to platinum it which takes a long time lol. I'm pretty close all I have left is the grindy stuff which is taking a bit and don't even get me started on that puff puff trophy that thing is rigged lol.

Wow that trophy guide is awesome, great work! I just finished this game tonight and really enjoyed it, it was actually quite different from what I was expecting. The game is absolutely packed with content. I finished at 35 hours and didn't do a lot of the side quests, free battles, or dlc. I will likely play this again when it comes out in English.

The boss of the optional area that opens up after unlocking the Strongest of the Strong trophy is no joke. You will definitely need all 99 and damage accessories on for him. Back to farming more King metals, my life as a Metal Slime farmer.

Also the ring that you get from the Jessica and Yangus quest is amazing. It gives +2% for mini medal drops but it's easily more than that, I was getting 25 every 10 minutes just farming low level enemies, some mobs would drop up to 4 at a time.

This is it by the way.

I need to get that thing since getting the small medals is such a huge pain in the ass otherwise. And before they patch it too. Once I get the quest / should disconnect the PS4 from the net so the game wont get auto-update nerf if indeed the ring is "broken" lol

Same, the only trophy i'm missing is to get all weapons/orbs, i'm just missing like 4 weapons from the medal merchant but it's like 200 medals, it would take me like 3 full days of farming so i gave up...thanks for the info about the ring Cmagus, i totally missed it !

And yes, Atlas is super strong, i had to use the broken character (Terry) to beat him.

When can you get the quest to get that mini-medal ring? I'm at the barricade mission ATM.

The ring is the reward of one of the quests in the Psaro DLC. Also i can confirm it's working, not sure if it's the ring itself or the rare event materials that is going on today, or maybe a mix of both, but i'm done with small medals farming, 200 small medals in like 1hour and platinum trophy, feels good :

I can focus on RGG 0 now !

What is the trick with Terry? I've heard he has some sort of stun lock. Also I'm sitting at 99% for my monsters list I'm assuming Atlas counts as the last one?

Atlas himself isn't even hard it's just the large amounts of other enemies that spawn that makes it so difficult.

Congrats on the platinum its a really good challenge. I'm so close, all I need it the weapons and orbs and my monster list/ coins are both at 99%. Other than that I need the puff puff one still with two characters but they don't seem to want work.

Thanks !

I had issues with the puff puff one too, it took me maybe 300 resets to finally get Bianca, i hate those random event things, so annoying. Terry is just broken vs Atlas cause of how fast he's gaining tension with his clones (and of course his insane single target DPS), you can just stunlock the boss : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ehumI8cKf_o

As for the monster list, i'm not sure if Atlas counts or not since when i beat Atlas i was still missing one monster : ひとくいばこ so i can't confirm sorry.

Level 99? I assume metal slime farming is the way to level up quickly?

Yes, equipping the Happy shoes and farming King Metal Slimes is the fastest way. I took down Atlas with Terry at level 89 but it was very close. I can also confirm that Atlas is part of the monster list he will be needed to get that trophy.

I finished this game today with around 29 hours on my game clock. I did 80% of the quests, but toward the end I got tired of the "kill 40 X" and "get 2 of this and 5 of that" type quests, so I just stopped doing them. After getting Manya, my party consisted of Act, Manya, Jessica, and Bianca for the rest of the game. I think my favorite character is Bianca; her bow and arrow attacks are super fun and very useful.

Overall I enjoyed the game. The graphics are really nice on the PS4, and the sense of destruction was very satisfying. I liked the level up system, the skill point upgrades, etc. The CG story scenes were beautiful. It really shows how great a proper DQ could look on the PS4, with enough time and care put into it.

However, I did not like the following:

-Too many tower defense stages.
-"Kill the gate guardian" missions were overdone.
-The story was not very good. After a few hours Meer's "mata nagai yatsu?" schtick got really old, and after 10 hours it got really annoying. Unfortunately she does it the whole damn game. Over and over and over.
-Felt more like a hunting game (a la Toukiden) at times, due to the mission structure.
-Last boss fight was blah and too easy, with no strategy needed.

A solid 8/10, worth a play.

Last map of the game : エルサーゼの戦い 上級.

Clear mobs north/west (you do not need to kill the boss far north/west so don't go to far), tp (ルーラ) to the flower bed avenue (花壇通り), tp back to the start, clear mobs north/west, do this until the metal monsters spawn, rince & repeat.

Here's a video of how to farm there : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rURUHccwigg

It's recommended to use Alena with 3 ちからのルビー (power ruby) equipped, use clone skill and spam her Square move (explosive fists) cause it hits many times so more chance to kill metal king.

I wanted to platinum the game but farming the small medals to buy the orbs/weapons from the medal merchant is a major pain in the ass...i'm only missing weapon/orb and accessories trophies...

Seeing just the thumbnail of that video with a metal slime in HD gets me so pumped.

Glad you liked it. And as for bold part that's one of the reasons (Tokiden, that is) SE decided to finally greenlight the project, so there's that.

Yeah lighting on metallic enemies (metal slimes, goldmen and such) alone makes me enjoy the game even more :D

My dad was going to Singapore a month ago and on the way he had to stop in Japan for a layover flight and I told him to look out for this game. I get into contact with him a week or so after and he says he couldnt find it. Fast forward to last week I got to Peru to meet him and he apologizes he couldnt find it. I said no problema at all, then at the house he pulls it out saying look what I found. I can´t wait to be back in the states tomorrow to play this. This is my first import game ever and it seems pretty straighforward. If I enjoy it a lot ill doublé dip when the US versión releases to understand the story.

I haven't played this in a while, but I started playing this on PS4 tonight, and a friend wanted to watch me play so I started my stream on ustream...after a few minutes, the stream only displayed a picture of a globe with an exclamation point, and the PS symbols under it.

Are the blocking people from streaming this on ustream now too? WTF?

hmmm that is weird wonder why that would be?

Just did a quick search and there are other chans streaming it on ustream so does not seem to be game specific.

I got this game about two weeks ago and have been playing it on the weekends.

I'm at the Light Dragon fight now. I have her with three devil amulets and at level 34 or so. When I made it to the second part with 10HP remaining and no healstones left, and was greeted with the dragon again on the restart, I chose to meekly quit the game rather than take the disc out and break it in half.

Is there any strategy to this battle other than to spank the dragon's ass all the time and pray that he doesn't swat you away as you approach? Thanks.

Pretty much thats the best you can do, if you want to be doing the most damage from what I remember anyways. As dont recall like doing anything different from other fights vs a dragon. Besides trying not to get hit as yeah that shit does hurt. D: Considering your lv and the lv of the person in the vid below you should be able to defeat it.

All I remember was running away from the lightning stuff and hitting it a lot. lol

Thanks. Well, I guess the small solace I can take from that response is that I wasn't doing anything specifically wrong.

By the way, was a consensus ever formed on the ideal team? Perhaps there would be separate sets on the basis of AI use only versus characters to have available for player use. e.g., I like playing as Manya but she's probably of little use through the AI. I'd think the only mainstay is Jessica for Hustle Dance, but who else beyond that?

Jessica Alena Bianca seemed pretty good, but I wonder if putting Terry in over Bianca would be better. And so on.

it depends on what you are fighting really since everyone seems to have plus and minus in some ways outside of personal prefs. terry is great vs metal slimes due to the hayabusagiri skill

if there are a lot of flying enemies bianca works well

yangus can deal out large damage and tank stuff if necessary.

Finally decided to start playing this again, after not being very impressed with it at launch. This time around, I really liked the game and before I knew it, four and a half hours had gone by! Glad I didn't sell this off now.

Question- where is the DLC for this on PSN? All I saw that was available were Dragon Quest III clothes for the two main characters. Was it downloaded automatically and added in as additional quests with unlocks?

Apparently these are done via update with the game is what the OHP says. Just checked it out.
