Dragon Quest VIII announced for 3DS

Graphics wise PS2 Abyss is still better, as well as better control with Dual shock. Faster loading is the only advantage.
3DS version also has a better framerate in the overworld. As in not in the teens.

I think stereoscopic 3D is also a nice visual addition and something that undoubtedly would've brought PS2 to it's kees. Shame about the 30fps battles but it wasn't bad overall for a rushed budget port.

Square won't even commit to localizing games that actually sell well over here. If it's not Kingdom Hearts or Final Fantasy they won't touch it.

Fuck them for real. At this point I wouldn't even buy it just out of spite.

Meh, I don't like this trend of downports instead of HD remasters.

I feel the same as I did when they announced Xenoblade 3D, I'll buy it if it gets localized (it probably will) because it's one of my all-time favorite games, but it's a missed opportunity.

Great news, except we're still waiting to see if we even get DQVII.

I want to be happy, but I'll need a western confirmation first. :/

Nintendo really needs to arrange a publishing agreement with Square-Enix for their 3DS games in the West. Bravely Default was a pretty big success that only came over because of Nintendo. If Nintendo can cover translation costs and distribution in the West it would be a win win for both companies. It would fill in the quieter months and without the huge piracy rates of the NDS, they would sell enough to at least be profitable.

Dragon Quest VIII is one of my favorite RPGs ever, but 3DS? Come the fuck on. If you're going to re-release a game, it should at least be an upgrade in terms of A/V presentation.

Atlus actually likes money unlike some other companies.

if they like money developing an otaku bait rpg for wii u seems like a horrible way to do that
more like nintendo is paying the bills on smtxfe
also, for a company that supposedly likes money, they sure left vita owners hanging after they flocked to a ps2 port

the issue with dq in the west is that nintendo isn't interested in paying the bills and neither is se
but this will most likely be a largely identical (content wise) port of a game that already has an english translation
yeah, they'll need to do some work on the additional things, but eh

Call me a naive optimist, but didn't DQ8 do well overseas before? It's not like DQ7, where it didn't, and DQ8 also has a much smaller script. And this seems to be a port more than a remake, meaning most of the translation (and voicework, I guess, even though the Japanese version had none) is already done. I think there's actually a good chance we might get this.

Don't worry guys, they'll probably do a VII + VIII one cart bundle to save up on production costs for the western release.

You're telling me I can finally make a party with these two.

And the only thing that could stop me is SE/NOA not bringing this over?

Japanese 3DS here I come.

I misread the title and thought this was an old thread with a localization announcement for DQ7, eh it's nice to see this happen at least

Cool, I'll pick this up probably via eshop in August.

My least favorite Dragon Quest but still much better than many other RPGs. Maybe they'll add a class system!

I remember something about Square giving Nintendo the choice between localizing DQ7 and BD and not both. Nintendo went with BD. Need to find the source for it so hold on.

Edit: Here we go

Even though we know Nintendo was publishing the game stateside and in Europe it’s now been confirmed that they are also handling the translation. Apparently they had to choose between Dragon Quest VII and Bravely Default. Although it’s possible Dragon Quest VII may come afterwards. It’s being done in a NOE studio, the same one responsible for Xenoblade, The Last Story and Pandoras Tower.

With that said the NA delay is likely due to the fact that NOA wants to modify the game back into American English so that it will be marketable, hence the 2014 delay.

From the DQ7 thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=587921

They do have a conference this year, at the same time as Nintendo no less, hype!

D:

I have been waiting for an announcement of Dragon Quest VII since 2012 when it was first announced for Japan.

I don't think there is any chance of it coming. I stopped hoping last E3 when Reggie told us the news that they had nothing to announce.

Edit: Wait, Square-Enix's and Nintendo's events are at the same time? This is news to me!

There you are! Was hoping you'd be around for the thread tonight.

In all honesty, was this release inevitable given the state of Japan's 3DS industry? Or could it be a sign that SE's still considering bringing VII (and now VIII) to the states?

8 could come to NA. the localization work is already done for everything but the new content, after all. They don't even have to record voices for this version, because NA got those when Japan didn't.

This is the logical follow-up to Dragon Quest VII Remake and the only surprising thing is that it took this long for Square Enix to announce their next portable Dragon Quest (main series) remake / port. Well, there is Dragon Quest X (3DS) but it's not the same.

Because half a dozen unlocalized 3DS DQ games just wasn't enough punishment for western DQ fans, lets go for a full dozen :\

Western fans had their chance but refused to buy Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 2 and especially Dragon Quest VI. And it's not that Dragon Quest IV and V sold like gangbusters either, both had a very mediocre sales performance.

That 70k link is often cited but it's wrong. DQVII has been transcribed by fans, the entire script is only ~250k words long.

Each of the Kiseki games are also longer afaik. As is every Animal Crossing.

I provide a source and you provide one too. You know how these things go. I tend to believe the people who translate the games over anyone else. :P

Oh, cool. I just started replaying this on PS2, so I'll just stop. Hopefully it gets localized. Optimistic due to most of the localization already existing. Hopefully it leads to more western releases beyond the musou stuff.

You could also say DQ Heroes 2 proves SE aren't done with the DQ series on those consoles, with XI possibly included.

I don't think a port negates what Horii said about wanting to play DQ XI on a big screen.

Maybe I'm crazy, but I think the like eight Dragon Quest games on 3DS might indicate that DQXI is also a 3DS game. Now, DQXII? An HD version of DQXI? Those seem more likely for PS4. If it ever takes off in Japan. Or even gets a step above embarrassing.

Yeah I'm having alot of faith in this one actually coming over, unless the new content is really substantial and Square decides it's just not worth it.

What's crazy was that I was actually planning on playing this game soon since I just finished beating DQ 3-6 now, but I ended up starting 9 since I wanted to keep playing on handheld for right now. Gonna wait it out atleast til E3 now to decide whether I'm just gonna wait for the 3DS version if it does get localized.

well they might for new characters/scenarios, but the work would probably be comparatively low.

in addition to the localization efforts essentially being done (i imagine it's not a simple 1:1 dealy), dqviii is probably the most recognized in the series in the west. compared to dqvii, the roi is probably pretty high.
