Dragon Quest XII as we know it has been scrapped; development now restarting from scratch

I bet this was going to be fully action RPG and that's why they decided to scrap it, because they realized the flack they were going to catch. That plus seeing the success of turn based games again, including the remasters. I'll gladly take an ugly ass haircut over what this was probably going to be 😂
That honestly disappoints me, because I just can't enjoy turn based battles at all. But it's great for the fans if that's the case.

Hey, I get you, I don't like It either. But It has been officially confirmed it's Toriyama's artwork.
About as confirmed as Sugiyama composing for DQXII when Sugiyama died in 2021. They can say whatever they want but longtime fans of the series know what Dragon Quest is supposed to look like.

If they rebooted development all the old art and music assets were likely thrown out the window or reconfigured.

I just see Snake Oil Salesman giving you PR statements.

Ewwww

I want to try and not prematurely judge the game as DQ is one of my all time favorite IPs. I think here's what gets me is the "coincidence" of the main char having a cut that seems shared with your typical pronoun type retard girls that shave their sides like that, like could that hair be on some weird supposed female character? Again just pointing it out as it's the one thing that jumps out, he couldn't just have a regular warrior type haircut to look a bit more masculine, again just observation.

And it's like coincidence number two is of cooourse they said their, and not his journey.

Again I'm not gonna lose my mind over it but it's like just can't say his? Just can't do it...

The environments look good and pretty awesome, but yea the characters look pretty downright retarded.

Not going to argue that. You're most likely correct also. Japanese developers are under the impression that it's what "westerners" want. Square is big on DEI though.
Yeah sadly a lot of japanese companies have been hiring western consultants with Capcom being another one that got hit with that heavily.

Here's hoping they realize their mistake sooner rather than later. I love DQ, and I don't want to think XI will be the last good entry.

I wonder what in the world could be "offensive" in a Dragon Quest game so they would censor it?:messenger_unamused:
They censored a female design and some monsters in DQ3 HD-2D, and then again another female design for the DQ7 Remakester.

They could also go and remove the puff-puff jokes... :lollipop_crying:

When they said Flames of Fate was going to be darker, I thought it wouldnt work. But taking Beyond Dreams in an even darker direction is a bold choice. What if this glue-huffing protag is having a psychotic break in methadone clinic and his dying brain is coming to terms with his end via an Akira Toriyama-inspired generic fantasy world that represents his childhood. The monsters he fights along the way are suppressed trauma and addictions. Then it ends like Requiem For a Dream with the greatest Puff Puff of all time

People comment on the eyes of the MC. You do realize the game is about a dream world and the concept of sleepy looking eyes could be relevant to part of the story?

Now saying you don't like the look is fine. But it's definitely very intentionally designed that way and i will be shocked if it stays that way the entire game.

Why does the protag have titty armor?
Not to defend that shit design, but that kind of armor is common at least in fantasy settings

Makes sense to put the most protection on the left side since that's the side that points to the enemy, while keeping the rest free for max mobility.

DQVI was also about dreams and the character looked way cooler in that one:

DQXI designs are top. People have the right to complain.

You guys defend this awful protagonist are out of your fucking minds.

If you don't have standarts, thats totally fine. Just don't complain about people expectations.
thank you.

fucking morons in this thread with dumb ass low expectations from a new mainline dq

DQ 11 was absolutely incredible IMO. I loved 8 and 9 as well. I trust them when they say the original dark XII wasn't working out. I trust them with the new direction they went with. I think they've earned that trust for their mainline DQ games.

what were they smoking when they made that protagonist.
i hope this isnt a design by the deceased Akira Toriyama.
looks terrible, who wants to play like a dude thats been smoking meth.

Yeah I don't think the eyes are a big deal. The hair on him and the lizard guy are kinda offputting though, tbh.

Still, I have faith, and we've barely seen anything yet.

Also re. censorship that video was too annoying for me to watch the whole thing, full blown youtube AIDS. So I'm just going off what I've seen elsewhere. Most of those complaints are legit like the ones about the character and monster designs and I don't like Body Type A/B either, but I saw someone complaining about them replacing the cross which Square Enix removed from Dragon Quest releases starting like 20 years ago, so that at least isn't a legit complaint.

Thankfully we've got mods https://gamebanana.com/mods/555706

From my understanding of the trailer, that's actually the main character. One of the forms is of himself as he sleeps and the other as he's awake
Indeed, my Detective Friend, I had that same thought, I was going to say it, because of the armor and his build, it's the same protagonist but with a different form.

You guys are reading too much into the English subtitle using the word "their". This is extremely common in Japanese -> English translations since a lot of the words in Japanese referring to people aren't gendered like they are in English. I believe they actually just said essentially "this character" but translating that literally probably sounded too wooden.

I was looking forward to the presumable darker tone, so that's a bit of a disappointment. That said, the environmental navigation looked great - really impressed with the visuals there. The character design is more than a bit silly, but whatever.

This one is actually pretty funny. They removed the Cross and added a Trident to be the Patron symbol for Rubiss who is a Goddess in many DQ games. However it just looks like they changed the Cross into a Devil's Pitchfork. So there is some confusion there.

I mean I understand the armor, but there is a visible bump on the armor. Like it's not flat, but has a bump to it.

SE doesn't even know how to efficiently produce their 2 flagship IPs anymore, DQ and mainline FF. For shame.
They haven't known how to do shit for over a decade, it's only now that people are finally realizing what a broken, shit company they've been.

I wonder how much longer they can coast by on the strength, dwindling as it is, of their IP....
