... I read Deadspin & Jalopnik pretty much everyday and if this shit continues they'll be gone and it won't be because they aren't profitable, ...
That is completely wrong. They are absolutely not profitable, none of these outlets are.
If they were in anyway profitable they would not be passed around from one investor/company/scam-victim to the next.
If they were profitable they would be let to continue doing what they do.
But they are not profitable and probably never will be as it is.

The main problem is that there are so very many of these divisive and highly woke clickbait outlets
and there are actually very few readers to share across all these sites. They all write basically the same
clicky-baity woke trash but there is actually virtually no audience for them.
(See Waypoints youtube audience for an example of audience. When they were in trouble half a year ago we checked/saw their youtube channel had a reach of low hundreds of views per video)

To further make it even worse, the tiny audience they do have is all super woke but don't have much money and as such, any
advertizing to these demographics, well advertizers will NOT pay as well for ads to these audiences as they would pay to normal people.

LOL.

Resigned? More like fired or pressured out.

However, with the talk about execs not liking Deadspin's focus on politics, I'd like to see examples of the kinds of articles the exec didn't like. If it's topics like Colin Kaepernick which is a mix of sports, players, owners and Trump, I think it's fair game to post it..... within reason of frequency. Can't make a quirky sports site all about sports politics.

Anyone have examples of the kinds of articles the exec didn't like?

For sure.

Media has really become clickbaity especially the last 5 or so years. Thread titles and articles weren't like this in the 2000-2010 range. Something stupid happened.

Thread link in 2008: Albert Pujols buys expensive car

Thread link the past 5+ years: You'll never guess which baseball player bought a $400,000 car!!!

And the reason why so called journalists resort to stupid tactics is because their content sucks, and the only way to hook in readers is trashy headlines and content.

Pretty sure The Wall Street Journal tells it like it is. I haven't read a WSJ article in a while, but I'm pretty sure if they do a blurb on McDonald's it'll be titled: McDonald's reports record Q2 earnings.

As opposed to something junky a 26 year drop out would write (who actually thinks they are a literary scholar): You'll never guess how much profit this famous burger maker made. CLICK HERE!!!!

Every time I read stuff from this union, I just hear Jan from The Office.
Jan: Excuse me. I've been told there's been some interest in forming a Union and that Michael supported it. Obviously he's not a friend of yours because he didn't tell you the facts. So let me. If there is even a whiff of unionizing in this branch, I can guarantee you the branch will be shut down like that [snaps her fingers]. They unionized in Pittsfield and we all know what happened in Pittsfield. It will cost each of you a fortune in legal fees and union dues and that will be nothing compared to the cost of losing your jobs. So I would think long and hard before sacrificing your savings and your futures just to send a message. If you have any further questions you can direct them to... to Michael.

I got bad news for you, Jason. I adblock Kotaku.
Wait...alt-right?

Because people on GAF oppose...what exactly? I always thought Alt-right meant like Nazis and Breightbart. Not tryna get political in the gaming channel. I just feel like what I perceive as the alt-right have better fish to fry than SJW journalists...am I wrong?

You're using like 2015 ~ 2016 era definitions, friend. The term has evolved to include just about everyone that isn't actively self-flagellating themselves for their inherent racism and calling for a complete dismantlement of western society and capitalism.

I'm sure big time left leaners call even moderate democrats (anyone who supports Biden-ish policies) alt-right.

So much for those lefties being supporters of freedom and tolerance. The most loud and destructive people actually come from alt-lefts. Doesn't even make sense, since you'd think a hard lefty would be someone who is a super chilled hippy smoking a bong in a van..... just a big care free happy person who loves life and people no matter what.

This is what gets me most about journalists such as Jason. Clearly he can write decent pieces but then he shows his true intelligence by classifying anyone he disagrees with as alt-right.

I can't stand politics. I'm not American and I want nothing to do with what is happening there. But simply by disagreeing with Mr Schreier when it comes to the quality of Kotaku's articles and writers, I'd be labelled alt-right (along with every negative connotation that comes with the label).

He probably blames every little inconvenience in life on this supposed alt-right. If he wasn't able to, he might be forced to recognise the true problems with sites like Kotaku and how injecting political drama into every article only makes things more divisive.

You're basically noticing the ever increasing difference between "left" and "liberal." A lot of the far left today are not liberal at all.

Not related to this topic (directly) but apparently today Barack Obama said this:

Dam Son.gif

This won’t go down well with the SJW’s. . Well done to Obama to condemn the lunacy, and so strongly even. Probably needs a new thread.

If we purge games news I’m sure the hyper-politicization in games will stop. Those threads on forums full of partisan political whines about games (and movies, and comics...) are clearly the fault of game journalists... Ethics in video game journalism. (Conservative) Gamers rise up etc and so on
This news really hurts you doesn’t it😂

God - I remember I got a one month ban on resetera for suggesting that westerners making movies like Black Panther might be a little annoying to people who actually live in poverty in Africa. The reason... racism!!!
I am pleased Obama came out and said this, as I think he recognises that when you go around telling normal people they are extremists just because they disagree with your views, it just skews the political spectrum.

Basically. The good old two-face persona.

Say one thing for personal gain and agenda building, then do a 180 when it's a non-issue.

Kind of like game devs...... "Hey gamers, we got a great game, everything is better. Yup, AI is better. Yup, graphics are better. Yup. It's longer and harder to beat." Game gets a 55% meta score.

3 years later...... "Ya, I admit it. Our last game wasn't that great. We didn't have the budget or experience. But we had to launch it half done....... But trust me, our next game will be awesome!"

While I think that politicization in games journalism mostly serves to separate and divide one of the best communities in the world (gaming), I despise cancel culture. I think that it's OK to have people and websites disagree on values and ideals. Cancel culture is what fractured GAF last year into ERA vs GAF. I have browsed GAF for almost a decade and nothing makes me more sad then remembering how this community was when it was "together". Remember when game developers embraced GAF?? (Who remembers Shu mimicking the Antonio banderas shocked meme that had been converted to nathan drake by naughty dog??)

A month ago I saw Biden on camera saying that a criminal should decide whether they go to a man's prison or a woman's prison, it's not for law enforcement to say. It should be up to them how they want to identify and where they want to be placed. Imagine all the chaos and rape of female prisoners that would ensue. The guy is not that moderate, he's just percieved as moderate because people remember him being VP at a time when the world was less insane.

Ehhh, it was a shitty effort at playing devil's advocate to rib you a bit even though we agree. I figured the same thing would have happened in the football world that we expect to happen in this instance. But ultimately going against the employer's interest made the likely a non-event. I'm just suggesting he might not be as marketable as we expect if future employers take issue with his participation in shaming his employer. I really do believe that might pose him more problems than we would expect at first glance because of his name. If an outlet wants to get off the social commentary bandwagon, or just wants to make sure employees will not attack the entity, he could end up in CK's shoes.
Yup, reputation is important.

There's one thing about Jason Schreier that has always driven me crazy. He is Kotaku's News Editor, which means that his job isn't just to report news (and I mean actual news, not just sporadic rumors), but also to oversee news reporting enabling and encouraging the rest of the staff to perform news coverage in a timely and extensive manner.

Not only his personal news coverage is extremely, extremely sporadic (as you can see yourself https://kinja.com/jschreier ), but Kotaku is likely the outlet I know with the worst track record in covering gaming news. I'm always baffled by how much relevant gaming news they absolutely fail to cover. Just as an example, today NiOh 2 got a release date and they didn't even take notice, but I could bring a million such examples.

Let's not even go into the fact that they have news posts that are literally 45 words, which is terribly lazy and abysmal in terms of providing details in an even remotely informative way. Driving quality in news reporting both for himself and the rest of the staff should be Schreier's actual job, but over the years I saw absolutely no effort in that direction. Sloppy and sporadic news reporting is Kotaku's standard, and that's done directly under his responsibility.

As a News Editor myself, it baffles me that someone having "News Editor" in his byline would be even remotely satisfied with such a disaster of a news department. I know many, many, sites with a fraction of Kotaku's resources and staff doing an exponentially better job.
That is precisely my issue with the website.

I'm actually quite OK with articles criticizing large-breasted anime girls or whatever and think the vitriol Kotaku attracts to be out of all proportion with whatever "agenda" they are supposedly peddling. Some of the most storied gaming rags in our hobby, from the early EGM to Edge, certainly had an editorial voice. What is the issue is that they consistently fail to cover huge chunks of the industry, time and again.

Then again, both Univision and now GO Media most likely have pretty detailed data maps of their visitors and it's quite likely that the vast majority of the audience is looking for a quick "geek" fix and nothing more.

I agree. There is a place and an editorial spot for these type of articles. Whether one sees it as a viable discussion is based on personal taste.

The issue isn't "woke". The issue is that "woke" was the go to sensational, clickbait farm to sell adspace for corporate interest for the past 9 years. And then they upped the ratio of it compared to less sensational, fact based news for the clicks. Hell, we are at the point where reviews are given a hot take meant to signal those that agree and bait those that oppose. Sensationalism, tabloid-style garbage has infected nearly everything. To. Get. Views. To. Increase. Ad. Sales. Even people who hate this "woke" shit will still share and click to tell their social circles that they hate it and/or to dunk on it. And it's just profit for these outlets.

This is a grift and they are frauds without realizing what damage it is doing to the long term discourse. All for ad revenue.

But this shit ain't working so well anymore. Fuck them.

Edit: I do not believe Kotaku is going out of business tomorrow. I do believe the tide is turning on this bullshit though. When you see a scam for what it is, you can call it out and avoid it.

I will not gather a mob on social media and demand that any of these clowns get fired or else. The way I see it, their collective behavior and publishing decisions will achieve the same goal.

As Kotaku and the rest of the remaining “old guard” of “gaming journalism” desperately cling to life through generating controversy and division, people are moving on from said bullshit to other destinations. YouTube and Twitch personalities— “influencers”— are where the bulk of web traffic is headed now, away from the sociopolitical crap and whiny writers and constant harangues that have fatally infected once-prominent websites over the last 5-6 years.

As traffic declines and money stops flowing in, these “gaming journalists” will be out of steady work and will be forced to either try the e-begging route (via Patreon or other crowdfunding source) or change careers due to their own self-inflicted damage. Some will weep for them, but most won’t.

The writing has been on the wall since the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy, where “games journalists” started a war with their readership by launching insults and angry tirades at them instead of even trying to take a neutral stance. They protected their friends, demonstrating shameful conflicts of interest, and lost the trust and respect of many. Then came the GamerGate debacle, which created an even larger gulf between the two sides.

Only the most drama-addicted people will miss Kotaku, IGN, et al when their doors close. The rest moved on long ago to sources that prioritized video games over sociopolitical issues.

"Don't speak truth to power".. it's a fucking sports tabloid. Internet journalists have the most inflated egos I've ever seen, holy shit.

Not related to this topic (directly) but apparently today Barack Obama said this:

Welp, time to cancel Obama. But seriously, I'm glad more and more people are standing against the bullshit.

No sympathy for these people. They made a choice not to follow employer directives and decided to play the martyr/victim card. People leave jobs they don’t like because of employer rules and/or expectations all the time. It’s not a new concept.

I don’t see the problem with sports sites sticking to sports or video game sites sticking to video games. Want to write about politics? Quit, and find a job at an appropriate venue. You don’t get any medals for deciding to leave your cushy jobs because #RESIST or whatever political bullshit you buy into.

Here’s a truth that slacktivists selectively refuse to acknowledge: There’s a significant number of people who rely on entertainment as an escape from the shitshow that reality has become. Selfishly dragging sociopolitical bullshit into said entertainment and thus eliminating it as a form of escape is going to royally piss them off. When you piss them off, they leave and don’t come back... and, without them, revenue falls, and damage is done. Slacktivists may consider this a worthwhile sacrifice for the “greater good” or “being on the right side of history”, but the people who sign the paychecks don’t want to (and don’t have to) make such sacrifices.

Rest

All these years later I still chuckle at what a fucking moron that guy is.

I mean, generally, I feel bad for people in the games biz losing their jobs, because it's a tough industry in that regard.

In this case, though? Can't say I have much sympathy. What a cesspool that place became over the years.
These people aren't in the gaming business, they're third tier news media. Just because they shill as video game adjacent doesn't mean they're in gaming.

Good for him speaking the truth.
wtf i love Obama now
Too bad Obama doesn't have the balls to call out cutting out the woke policies every one of the 20 democrat candidates promoted on TV the past 4 months.

But Obama and Trump aren't so far apart. Look at this. When was the last time any of the democrat candidates did this?

Sorry form them? Nope. They are just trying to mobilize the woke army they have pandered to for clicks. It's not actually working though and it's hilarious to watch. At the time of this post this story is not even on the first page of gaming on Resetera and it's struggled to stay there after everyone made thier drive-by support post.
