Dying Light PC Performance Thread

A post-process one, nothing else. TXAA was supposed to be supported but it's nowhere to be seen.

I think heavy film grain + CA + PPAA make the game looks worse than it should.

I do wish there was a film grain option. Performance or not I would love it.

Weird, I was getting shit performance on my 4GB 670 even after a few restarts, but after another random restart my performance went through the roof and now I'm getting a decent 40-60 frames with the same settings.

Sounds similar to me. The game is performing great for me now and I have no clue as to why. I've even gone UP in view distance.

I wonder when that patch the developers mentioned is coming.
I want to beat zombies in the face at a decent framerate. :(

Had a similar experience, but I didn't restart the game just alt-tabbed out and then back in...really weird.

For those with 970 SLi, i also had issues with flickering / bad FPS

I seemed to of fixed most of these by doing the below

1. Setting dyinglightgame.exe in task manager priority to realtime (need to do this every time you launch the game)

2. Apply the reddit fix / SteamApps\common\Dying Light\DW\Data0.pak (Also found on page 12)

3. Using the below settings - at 1440p maintaining a good 90-120fps without issue

Nice

It seems that the drivers for Nvidia Cards are part of the problem.

I had the newest drivers installed (347.25) and got around 40-50 fps outside the tower with all settings turned to the lowest and View Distance at 0% with dips to 30 in cutscenes.

Then I rolled back to 344.75 and now I'm getting around 55-60 with rare dips to 50 in the same area with everything maxed out! and View Distance at 50%. At the same settings I had with the 347.25 driver I'm getting steady 60 FPS.

My rig:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (8 CPUs), ~4.2GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 3GB
16GB RAM

EDIT: And I removed the film grain.

I had that same problem with Alien Isolation & Unity but after a clean reboot and loading the games they ran fine.
Maybe programs still reside after being closed and that affects performance???

Kinda' weird. I'll be getting a nearly perfect 60fps with these settings, reload the game, and then everything feels slightly slow/jittery even though the counter is reading 60fps. Then I'll reload and it's smooth again. Not sure.

So ended up turning everything to medium, view distance at roughly 40%, Ambiant Occlusion and AA turned on but everything else turned off.

It was playable but all over the place. Would go from 25 to 60fps and fluctuate all the time.

Really annoying

GeForce GTX 770 (2gb)
Win 8.1

Okay, just tested this for a few minutes, but I seemed to have fix this with the weirdest fucking solution.

Like I said, I was getting an annoying sporadic slowdown when panning the camera around, which seemed unrelated to framerate. It definitely felt sync-related. It was reading 60fps (with v-sync), but felt more like 50-ish. No idea why this worked, but here's what I did:

- Set my framerate cap to 60 in Rivatuner
- Forced v-sync on in Nvidia Control Panel

That's it. Will test more, but it feels as smooth as Mirror's Edge at the moment with the above settings (in quote). So strange.

edit: still working after quitting/restarting three times.

I guess you dont want to fiddle too much with it now, if you actually got the game running good without exactly knowing how.

But i was just wondering if you've found that both steps were crucial, framecap as well as vsync.

Sorry, should've clarified. Simply forcing v-sync via Nvidia works about 99% of the time for me, but not in this case.

Only reason why this case is so peculiar is because both v-sync and rivatuner cap must be applied. Again, no idea why this works.

This is for people getting a solid 60fps (w/ v-sync), but still have that jittery feel.

I have to toggle fullscreen mode off / on one time in-game to get vsync working properly, otherwise it stays locked at 30fps.

I'm pleasantly surprised by how well it's running on my machine. I was worried by some of the posts here. I haven't had a chance to do a framerate analysis but I will tonight.

i5 2500k @ 3.3Ghz
12GB DDR3 1600Mhz
GTX680 4GB

Currently running everything on High except Shadows (medium), default FOV and draw distance at 50%

I am playing with a controller and have motion blur enabled so that's probably smoothing out the framerate a bit.

Simple reason: frametime.

When you cap the game at 60 with RivaTuner, as long as your frames stay at or above 60, you'll get a consistent frametime of 16.6 ms.

Even with vsync enabled, depending on the fps, the game still renders frames under or above 16.6 ms without a framerate cap. That's what some describe as "stutter," even when they're having zero performance issues.

I cap almost all of my games with RivaTuner, and as a general rule, I never use a game's built-in vsync, and instead force it in the control panel. For whatever reason, some in-game solutions can be bugged out.

Frametime is also partly responsible for the complaint that locking games to 30 fps on PC doesn't feel as smooth as on console. However, the reason most consoles feel smoother at 30, is that not only do they have a frame cap of 30 (giving a consistent 33.3 ms), but the vsync is also usually set to half refresh (30Hz). In most instances, you need both for it to feel "right."

Awesome explanation, appreciate it. Guess I'll keep capping my games w/ Rivatuner from now on. Never thought that was necessary.

Yup, and that CPU core balancing definitely improves performance. I'm pretty much done tinkering now. Buttery smooth 60fps in calm areas, but dropping to around 45fps in huge zombie packs. Single 970.

Looks like I'm just gonna' go with a 30fps lock with my 970 and try 1440p. Can't deal with drops to mid 40's.

Is anyone having bizarre directional audio issues? I can NEVER tell where zombies and gunshots are coming from. It's completely fucked.

Did sb find a way to toggle HUD yet? I know there is a no-HUD mod available but I'd rather toggle for screenshots.

I'm enjoying the game so much but it's unplayable here.

I'm running it <30FPS most of the time when I'm outside, I tried putting all my settings as low as I could and the performance is still crap. Think I'll try to OC my i5 2500K tomorrow, maybe @4.5 the game can run better, dunno =/

My specs, btw:
- HD 7970
- i5 2500K @stock
- 8GB RAM DDR3

Having trouble with double screen. Screen isn't locked on my first one so what happens my mouse even i do not see it it goes to the other screen and when clicking it can jump out of the game. Is there a solution for this?

Quick two cents, I actually don't mind the film grain, it's the CA that I can't stand at all. It's nice being able to disable it manually but I hope to see an in-game setting to disable it officially. CA is like looking at a 3D image without the glasses, just terrible.

I have a I5 2500K o'c dto 4.5 will this work for that CPU?

I have an i5 2500k oc'd to 4.5, and it gained me about 3-5 fps from what I can tell. I just hopped up to rooftop where my fps dropped below 60, and then alt+tabbed and did the tweak. Went back into the game and it was about 5 fps higher.

Hard to tell how consistent it is, or if I was just witnessing an anomaly though. The game's fps can sometimes fluctuate slightly even if you're standing still.

After the tweak, instead of 100%, and 20-30% for the other cores, it's around 50-70% across all four. So it's not like I'm gaining huge amounts of extra usage. It just seems to be balancing it across all four cores better.

Wait for a patch? All of these "fixes" do nothing much. The game has to be patched by the developers.

Yep. Just tried all the fixes and none of them worked.
Hope the patch is out over the weekend.
I don't have the stutter but someone mentioned textures on medium fixed it for them (presuming you mean the camera turn one).

Its like a constant stutter. Like each step i take im skipping a frame kind of stutter.
