E3 2011 Nintendo Press Conference Thread: What's in your coffee? [Over]

Some quick thoughts.. Maybe Nintendo should've waited to announce this thing until they had some more games. Shitty name. They focused too much on the controller. How many gaffers are on suicide watch right now?

we're disappointed because this looks like a 2006 machine with a 2011 controller, whats to stop the vita being used like this for the ps3

I'm usually the type of person who is optimistic about new technology, but this conference was an exercise on how not to sell most people on something. I was on the borderline of wanting a 3DS but all these rehashes of older games just sealed my opinion on waiting at least another year or two. The "Wii U" was cute but bringing a console like that out next year is a bit silly. Sure, they're mostly banking on the new controller to sell the system but they have to price it very low to make major sales. I hope they can afford that with whatever technology they're using in the controller. Good luck to them but it's not a system I'll be excited for.

horrible e3 all around. whoever wins, we lost
... and that was E3.

I think this opens up MS to blow away everyone next year with Halo 4 & Samaritan demos on the next-gen console... I really hope they don't wait until late 2013 or 2014.

So, the Wii U is the new system's controller.... ? Or is it a new controller for the Wii?

Or...?

WTF JUST HAPPENED

I like how Nintendo once again confuses the entire industry.

Of course they're confused. Who isn't??

Pretty good on the whole. Controller looks tight and should be great for multiplayer, a little underwhelming that Nintendo didn't announce any games for it themselves but they seem to have a fair few developers on board already.

im clueless.. they didnt mention the console at all, just the controller, as if the new console is just the controller..

so many mad people

before nintendo showed HD = HAHA NINTENDO IS DOOMED
after nintendo showed HD = W-W-WELL WELCOME TO FIVE YEARS AGO

if nintendo can retail this for $150-$200 they win
It has a screen for a controller, you think it's going to sell for $200?

What a blow for console gamers has this E3 been. The only conference that was good was Sony's and all the big profile games were sequels. MS conference was pathetic and Nintendo is the most confusing one ever delivered.

The hardcore calls the PC home from now on.

Nintendo really had nothing to show off other than potential. Everyone was expecting to see the new console, but what we saw instead was the Wii U. They only had prototypes and not actual games. This thing probably won't come out until Fall 2012. We probably won't get the price and release date details until next year's E3. So why even talk about it now? I guess they have to talk about something since there isn't much to talk about with the Wii. If I only had money to purchase one new console I would definitely wait until Sony and Microsoft unveiled their new consoles.

My highlights?
1.The zelda bit at the start.
2.Finally seeing Wii U
3.Erm...3DS games blown up to resolutions higher than they should be viewed at for health reasons
4.Reggies lecture on Pokedex 3D

But overall left feeling hungry. Especilly for what I can look forward to on my existing systems Wii and DS. Which was a few logos at the end?

I'm sure I saw the logo at the end.

And e3.nintendo.com is over...

Nintendo is clearly caught in that transitionary period between no more development for the old console (= no Wii games) and development not being far enough for the new one to show anything (= WiiU tech demos and mockups).

It resulted in a bad show if you only look at the games. (No I don't care for the 3DS).

Again, the biggest news probably is that WiiU is getting in on the third party multiplatform action - for this generation's games.

No telling whether third parties will leave Nintendo in the dust once again when Sony's/MS' new consoles leapfrog it in terms of power.

They didn't show enough, that's my main problem. They should have shown a lot more, or shown nothing until a later date. We got to see a bunch of PS3/360 games, a Zelda that's never coming out probably, and a tech demo. Not enough to make an impression.

I was kinda hoping they'd start thinking seriously about online.

Regarding Wii U

  • I think the name sucks, Nintendo, Cafe, Beem, whatever-- all better names.
  • They should have had more ready than 8 Wii style demos. For Gamecube they didn't have games either, but they had an aspirational, rendered, demo clip. I suppose they have that in Zelda, but that's it? There should have been more.
  • The third party stuff should have came earlier.
  • Lego City Stories actually looked good visually, but it almost came over as a joke given GTA rumours etc.
  • The biggest boon for this was Battlefield 3 / Frostbite, and they didn't make anywhere near enough of it.

I know that I'm definitely on board, I think it looks amazing, but they need another event later in the year or early next year to really hit home why people should want this.

Likewise, I don't think they've done enough on 3DS. Mario and Luigi's Mansion look great, the freebies are most welcome (Four Swords!) but I wanted more from both Nintendo and third parties on games that are coming this year and next. That was very disconcerting to watch as an early 3DS owner.

Who will leave their gamer tag and friends on 360 and trophies and psn friends on ps3 to go to a new console, that is maybe more expensive and has the same games.
With 100$ controllers

The system can support batman arkman city and BF3, both really nice looking games, yet people are not impressed? If they try to make the system insanely powerful, it'll cost too much and it'll be PS3 all over again.

So, next gen every system is going to end up with tablet interfaces considering the industry's uncanny ability to follow Nintendo. Should be interesting.

why for the love of god are people saying nintendo won, and why are people hyped for this.

dirt 3 came out for ps3 and 360
arkham city will come out almost half a year earlier on the ps3 and 360
and most games they showed are just console ports.

while sony and microsoft will show their new console in 2012 with far better graphics.

why would you bring out a console with the same level of graphics as console that came out 6 years earlier who are on the verge of going to next gen.
You summed it up pretty well. Mind boggles...

So no one remember's E3 2010's 3DS reveal? This is exactly like that. They didn't show much then. We're several months away from WiiU.

And there's an argument to be made that the 3DS suffered for it; it's not exactly flying off store shelves.

Anybody with a 360 or PS3 even remotely excited for Wii U?

No. It was worse than I expected it to be. That controller looks uncomfortable as fuck. What is up with the sticks above the d-pad/buttons? That doesn't look good at all. The visuals didn't seem to set any fires at all, and seemingly, it's just barely on par with ports? The streaming thing is cool, but what's to stop Sony from doing the same thing with Vita now?

I'm shocked though, ninty had the chance to go out there and put Sony and MS away, but they failed to do that with a new console hardware announcement even. You know that Sony and/or MS are going to start talking/leaking next-gen machines next year, and they're going to put nintendo away. I mean the Vita is just a little behind the 3DS launch, and it's visuals smoke it.

I thought this was supposed to be for the hardcores, to get us back? I can't believe they bumbled this. It looks like the Sony out-did nintendo with the Vita in both hardcore and casual regards (visuals, input types, features, and price), and nintendo still doesn't have anything to win over hardcores in the living room.

I'm still going to think that the hardcore (non-ninty hardcore) are going to let this pass. Sony and MS are bound to start showing off new hardware next year, and it's going to leave the Wii U in the dust.
