Bethesda - 6/10
My personal problem with Bethesda is that I just don't dig their games all that much, so while something like Fallout 4 will set the world ablaze, I'm just left shrugging my shoulders. Having said that, it was a well put together conference, and the way the games were presented was on point, featuring loads of gameplay footage. I can look aside personal preference to say that they brought the games, even if the likes of Doom and Fallout 4 do nothing for me. Dishonored 2 is an exception to what I just said however, I'm looking forward to that. Shame about the CGI trailer used to present it though.
Microsoft - 6/10
Started off really well, firing on all cylinders, caused a genuine fuss with the backwards compatibility announcement and followed it up with an intriguing new IP in Recore, but after that it just started to get a bit stagnant. Nothing was standing out to me for whatever reason, whether it be a complete lack of interest in the overall franchise (Gears of War 4, Forza), overly-scripted footage (RotTR), smoke-and-mirrors VR demonstrations (Hololens) or just a general burning hatred for MMOs (Sea of Thieves). Started with a bang and ended with a fizzle.
EA - 4/10
EA can't justify having their own conference. It's plain as day. The whole affair was poorly-paced, suffered from serious deja vu (woo, annual sports franchises!) and was stuffed to the gills with mind-numbing filler. I was in disbelief when they pulled up a couple of seats to talk to Pele about... fuck knows what, I put that shit on mute. It was excruciating. 90% of the whole show was excruciating. What saved this debacle from the lowest grade possible was Mirror's Edge Catalyst. The sequel to my favorite game of last gen is looking killer. The open-world angle pisses me off, but I won't deny that otherwise, it looked exactly like the first-person parkour platforming I fell in love with back in 2008. Can't wait to play it. Unravel was really nice too.
Ubisoft - 3/10
Aisha Tyler is a diabolical host. Sorry, I know she has her fans here, but she just is. Everything about Ubisoft conferences has the air of try-hard hipness to it, and it's largely thanks to her. She's just such a cringe-worthy presence that it now renders Ubisoft E3 showings impossible to watch. As for the games... nah. They rolled out the usual suspects (yay, more Division shootouts, this time with added downgrade), they paraded a follow up to The Crew like it was a good thing, and everything that didn't involve cars or dancing was excessively violent. What is it with Ubisoft's obsession with violence?! I'm no wallflower, Hard Boiled is one of my favourite films, but god almighty, it's always a murder-fest with these guys. South Park was the closest they got to a standout moment, and I didn't even like The Stick of Truth, so that's not saying much.
Anyway, worst show of E3. Well done fellas.
Sony - 9/10
I'm a Team ICO fan, I'm a die-hard Shenmue fan, and FFVII is my all time favourite game. Needless to say, I was in seventh heaven. How often do you get the chance to witness not one, not two, but three megatons dropped in the space of a single show? It's unparalleled. Seeing TLG return and open the show brought tears to my eyes, no hyperbole. It was pure catharsis to watch that demo happen live, just like it was pure catharsis to watch Yu Suzuki walk on stage to a standing ovation. Unforgettable moments. Outside of the big three, Dreams confused but intrigued me, Horizon was a welcome escape from Guerilla's dour Killzone series, No Man's Sky justified yet another conference demonstration with some wondrous exploration, and they even had the sense to keep Morpheus talk to a minimum. Then they capped it all off with an amazing Uncharted 4 set-piece that served as pure fanservice.
It wasn't just a great conference, it was fucking biblical. History in the making. The only reason it doesn't get a perfect score is because there were still some flat moments. Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed and that mad eejit from Disney yapping on all hurt the vibe a little.
Nintendo - N/A
Didn't watch it. Direct videos always feel like they cater too much to the hardcore Nintendo fan, so I never bother watching them. Sounds like they didn't fare too well.
Square Enix - 8/10
I liked the formality of their conference. In stark contrast to Ubisoft, they had a straightforward, matter-of-fact style and structure to their show, and it really worked in their favour. It ended limply on a game announcement that consisted of little more than some concept drawings, and we got recycled trailers from Sony's conference the day before, but otherwise I was surprised by how well they did. They're bringing back one of my favourite genres (JRPGs) in style this gen, Deus Ex is looking killer, Kingdom Hearts 3 was delightful and they seem like they're getting it right with the new Hitman. Kudos to them, seriously. I thought it was going to suck.
PC - N/A
Didn't watch it, it was on too late.
