Sony: 5/5
If it wasn't for Sony, we'd say Bethesda was amazing, Microsoft was great, and Ubisoft were pretty good. But not this year. Sony blew the whole damn show up and years from now their conference will be remembered for the amazing wham-bam trifecta of The Last Guardian, Final Fantasy VII Remake and Shenmue III. The day they broke NeoGAF and Kickstarter. The day
people cried, cheered, danced and screamed.
Apart from the legendary trifecta, Sony's conference was improved in many ways. No sales numbers. No casual or mobile games. No droning about media services that have no place at E3. And it even started on time! What we were left with was a 90-minute show that was briskly paced and left us wanting more. When you see TLG, Horizon and FFVII within the first 30 minutes and are calling it the best conference ever, you know it's going to be something special. It was a huge range of varied games for all tastes. Horizon looked incredible and is absolutely the best new IP out of the whole week. Uncharted managed to one-up itself with another insane set piece.
Bethesda: 4/5
For their first time, they nailed it. The first showing of Doom looked dated but their second video was a lot more open and free flowing. The level editor is great but gives me doubt that it's their way into making getting their cut from paid mods. Fallout 4 is going to be massive, no matter how you choose to play it. Bethesda.net and the Elder Scrolls card game shows that they're ambitious enough to challenge Blizzard's offerings.
Ubisoft: 3/5
I wasn't that interested in the games, but this conference was pure entertainment value. Aisha is a great host, self-aware and never lets the show take itself too seriously. No AC gameplay is very concerning for how confident they are with Syndicate. For Honor looks promising and can hopefully deliver on the melee combat. The Division, Rainbow Six and Ghost Recon became tiresome and started to look like reskins of each other.
EA: 2/5
Saved only by Battlefront. Still no Mass Effect gameplay, and barely any Mirror's Edge. Why announce these games so early and still have nothing to show for them? And who the hell brings mobile games to E3? No one cares. No one who only plays phone games is tuning in to see Bethesda's Fallout Shelter or the Minions tie-in game. Pele was an absolutely dreadful choice for a celebrity guest.
AMD's PC Gaming Show Brought to You by AMD: 1/5
The only thing exciting here is finding out that Day9 deserves more work as a host. This guy is very likeable and covered up a lot of potentially embarrassing moments with humour and professionalism. The rest was a tedious 150-minute affair with an inexplicable talk show format, filled with AMD and Microsoft shilling, and showing us trailers that were already released earlier. Next time, if there is one:
- cut the number of guests
- bring us new stuff that debuts at the PC Gaming Show
- keep the show under 120 minutes, 90 preferably
Newest gaming trend:
- Gameplay slowing down while you select a weapon (Doom, Horizon)
Most cringeworthy moment/s:
- Pele droning on about football and taking EA's conference down with it.
- Jason Derulo's completely off-key performance to plug Just Dance at Ubisoft.
- Uncharted 3 freezing on stage
