well dunno if this been posted already

I just hope the world is interesting to explore, with possible secrets etc. Shadow of The Colossus was personally a bit of a disappointment (after all the hype), mainly because the world was devoid of any real fun factor outside of the colossi fights.

Based on this video at least, it seems the creature and/or you (the character/player) will be hunted by soldiers. Hopefully this'll add an extra interesting factor to the overall gameplay.

Are you writing in some strange way because the bolded parts made absolutely no sense to me?

;)

I ain't gonna hate on your opinion, but I had tons of fun in SotC besides the Colossus fighting. The world was probably the most engrossing one I've seen. The same with ICO (which is my favorite). Running around finding lizards, fruits, trying to climb the central building or trying to shoot down eagles and eventually catch flight etc. The kind of fun I had as a kid running in forests with a stick.

I'm so completely sold and it's my most anticipated game for PS3 now. I get a feeling of ICO + SOTC + Miyazaki movie. This is unique, charming and epic. I can't believe it. This game will be something else.

Spot on. This looks simply stunning.

I wish Yukio Futatsugi was in the same position as Fumito Ueda.

Hell, if Microsoft wanted - he could make something as good and original as Ueda's efforts. Futatsugi is, in my opinon, one of the most creative and visionary minds this industry has had. It's just too bad that no one is really giving him the opportunity.

No, I basically felt the same way. Well, the environments were enjoyable & felt great to traverse, and then to reveal the collossi, but the "game" was all about the fights, conquering something so huge, and that was kinda it, but it captured a mood which is what REAAALLY made it. This has way more scope for way more detailed interaction with the Griffin thingy and the adventures therein.

Yeah. There are several people that could reach the level of Team ICO if they had the funding. Kinda sad to think about though :(

Well, almost 40 pages of excitement/backlash for a year-old testbed of some Ueda game footage. About par for the course.

Kinda' goes to show how starving we are for something provocative to play.

I was a bit startled when I first saw the creature but the more I see it, the more I like it. I think the fact that the creature is a combination of various known animals make it a bit harder to sell than if it were an entirely new creature. IIRC I had the same problem when I first saw the same creature in the 3rd Harry Potter film.

Yeah. Creativity is pretty much dead in this generation. It kills me. The worst thing about it is that most people aren't into creative things (Clover Studio). They'd rather have garbage like Resident Evil 5 or something. :(

do you think trico will bring prestige to the sony ps3 brand? since gaf thinks this game will not make a profit.

Have Ueda's prior games really not made a profit? I thought SotC, at least, was fairly successful.

Here come the sales-age idiots.

I don't think it matters either way. Sony appears adamant in their support of the man's work, but it would be nice to see his games appreciated by more people. That said: Anyone who can't like that creature is heartless.

i'm just saying, who else out there gets given the kind of budgets Ueda gets without being expected to produce something mainstream and marketable?

Miyamoto doesn't. when he does a risky project he gets hardly any money... and i'm not really talking about Miyamoto in the overseeing role, but when he's driving a project.

i'm not saying there aren't other people out there given the time, fund, and freedom... i'm just saying, lets hear them named before we start giving Ueda all the credit. Sony are the ones bankrolling him. let's credit them. and lets not pretend like we know that only Ueda could do so well in a position that afaik he's the only one in.

frankly i think there's a lot of brilliant talents out there slaving away trying to meet budgets and make hits because they don't have any other choice. i hope more of them can get the Ueda opportunity and i take nothing away from his games, or the fact that Sony hand picked him for that opportunity.

Valve and Blizzard are rich enough and independent enough that they could bankroll something like an Ueda game if they wanted to, but it seems like they don't want to. that's the thing that amazes me about Sony supporting him as they have... because I genuinely don't think they expect to see a financial return on his stuff.

i think they do it for prestige... and we can be really thankful of that. i just get a little defensive when i see people who seem to think that no other developer could do as well.

we don't know... we should all want to find out... but i doubt anyone else has the money or the desire such that we'll find out.

ho hum.

You speak as if Ueda runs a 100-200 man team, which he probably doesn't, his team has never been a big studio even during the PS2 era, especially given the kind of ambitious game design that comes out of his studio, it's like Sucker Punch having their team size basically at 40-something and have a development period at 3+ years for inFamous instead of having 100 people, they can do that because they keep the team relatively small, God of War games are done by a team with two to three times the number of staff Ueda ever had. Now we don't know how many people Ueda has on staff but traditionally his team has always been quite small. I think sometimes we kind of just assume that first-party publisher would just dump a whole lot of money into a game without actually have producers and bean-counters assess and manage risks. They probably won't have 100 people prototyping an idea and in terms of budget and anticipated sales, they probably don't assume every title will be a million seller and as such won't allocate the kind of budget that requires a title to be a million seller.

hopefully the "indie movement" that's currently getting a lot of press can grow into something exciting.

SotC sold about 950k in the states, 300k+ in Japan, 2 million worldwide is probably about right. Considering the size of the team(just 30 people), the budget must've been pretty conservative...so I'm gonna go ahead and declare SotC to have been a big success. :P

Yeah, I figured it sold somewhere around there. Couldn't fathom it being considered unprofitable. That's why I asked for clarification.

Thanks, jett.

I keep watching this... the animation!

I like great graphics as much as the next person, but I am always 100% behind a dev that will sacrifice a bit on the "graphics" side, in favor of better animation. Movement is what gives things their character... Team Ico is amazing for a number of reasons, but their commitment to great animation is one of the team's strong(est) points.

Weren't both Ico and SotC made with small teams in a fairly normal time frame? Both games probably did not cost that much.

I woke up early today and read every response :) Anyone else wake up in a good mood?
I would've easily missed this post cause I usually jump to the last page after reading OP, but not for this thread. I've read every single fucking post and will continue to do so. For some reason, I feel happy doing it and reading impression, speculations and stuff about this game.

Last night at work, all I could think about was the premise of the game and what Ueda would do with it. I'm fairly confident that this game will blow my fucking mind over and over again. I've also seen the trailer about 30x now and showed it to all my friends and family. Some laughed, but most awwww'd and said they can't wait to see me play it. :D

what's interesting to me is the discussion about how players will be "emotionally affected" through narrative suggestion, not necessarily how the game will play or why it will be fun. from an outsider looking in, this is quite strange as it's a reversal of priorities for me.

SOTC was one of the games that made me feel that the creators took me serious as a player. The game made us figure out what to do without taking us by the hand. I really hope this game will do the same.

Funny by the way, how few games manage to do this. Is it really that hard?

About four years between their releases, so they took a while. The time investment is pretty abnormal by most standards, though yes, the teams were small.

Amazing. We've seen great games come around lately and I've wondered if team ICO would be able to wow us again. Mission accomplished. There's just something different about the way they tell a story.
It's because they know how to tell story through visuals and experiences. Whereas most developers tell stories through cut scenes, dialogue or god forbid, text.

Furthermore their characters really come to life through the outstanding animations. The baby griffin in this test footage animates better than anything out there in gaming. It acts completely real, it feels completely real despite it being a mythological creature. The same could be said about SotC. Agro felt and acted like a real horse and because of this I really connected with him during the game, unlike say an Epona in Zelda which animates completely unrealistically and controls like a car. Which is another brilliant decision from Team ICO regarding SotC. They didn't let you control the horse directly, instead they gave you the reins which adds to believability of the horse being an actual creature.

That's because Team ICO is doing something right and not something wrong. They are slowly but surely ferreting out the secret to game-specific narrative. I would classify Ueda's works less as games and more as experiences.

It certainly looks gorgeous and interesting. The animation is simply incredible. I'll definitely pick this up.

I just hope the gameplay will appeal to me as much as the animation and story. That's the where the previous two games disappointed me personally. Not that they were bad at all, but Ico was mediocre to me gameplay-wise and SotC was simply not my bag personally as I hate long drawn-out boss battles. My opinion only, but flame away if you must. I don't care.
