WTF is up with you people who can't recognize a griffin? Bird-dog-rat, rat-cat, bird-dog...! Geezus fuck.

If you saw a unicorn would you think it was an ugly goat-dog-worm?

Not a griffin it's a ratcatbird

You know what would be fricken sweet, and totally tie into the SOTC and ICO storylines?

Depending on what timeline this new game takes place in, have the kid be a bloodline descendant of the kid from ICO. Then have the 'creature' be a Colossus that was able to flee back when the other Colossus were being slaughtered by the guy (forgot his name sorry) in SOTC.

You play part of the game as each of them, then at some point in the middle they meet up and you play the rest of the game together. During that process, they get to know each other on an emotional level and learn of each other's pasts as they work together to defeat the new Evil Being that is in the new game, and have this new evil being somehow responsible/involved with the Evil plans that took place in SOTC and ICO.

looked amazing. The boy feels like a placeholder, there to try out animation and interaction with the griffin thing. Love the animation on the creature, the feathers, the backlighting halfway through the demo.

can't wait

A griffin is a bird-lion. This guy, imo, is clearly a bird-rat.

serious business

It's obviously a baby creature inspired by the griffin myth. Why people have been reduced to descriptions like "rat bird cat" or "dog cat airplane", "rat cow thing", etc, I have no idea. Okay, some of those I made up, but still I'm shocked at many of the comments in this thread.

I really don't understand all the hate from some posters on here. How can anyone watch that and be totally negative afterwards? I just don't get it.

I think the aliasing upset some people. Or the cute eyes on the birdratgriffinChrysler thing. ;)

I got all blurry-eyed, I admit. But then again I'm a huge SotC/Team Ico fan, so I guess that makes me emotional. ;)

just watched it again, and I will agree that the boy character seems like a work in progress. the real star of the show is the creature, who looks almost fully realilized. The difference in quality between the two is very apparant.

Neat trailer.

It could very well be the artists interpretation of what a very young over sized gryphon might look like. But i like the whole rat-cat-bird thing you guys have going on.

It's still obviously inspired by a griffin. There's a multitude of chimera/griffin myths and this looks like a cool TeamIco amalgam. Take a look at the beak-like face on one of the long sideshots.

I swear, some of these people must refer to cars as metalwheelcarts.

Someone please tell me this exists in high res.

Some of the SotC fan art is just incredible.

Sadly no. It was posted in some Japanese SOTC fanpic tournament i guess. There is no larger pic than this :-/

It is a type of griffin. They just decided to go a different route with the look of the creature.

edit: I see you were joking I think lol

Well who said it wasn't inspired by a griffin. Just because you look a bit like something doesn't mean you are something.

It's going to be fucking tragic when that baby griffin dies at the end of the game. I'm calling it.

Fucking hell man. Spoiler that shit.

Didn't know what to expect at first, but by the end of the video I really wanted to play it.

I think we're at the very least going to see it grow into an adult throughout the game. Act 1, baby, and by Act 3, pissed off adult gryph. :)

GRIFFINS AREN'T REAL! THEY ARE JUST TWO CREATURES BONGED TOGETHER, WHY CAN'T ANOTHER HUMAN BEING CREATE A CREATURE THAT'S TWO DIFFERENT CREATURES BONGED ONTO EACH OTHER!?

People create the griffin, so why can't we create something else!?

I hated Ico with an unhealthy passion, but that trailer was awesome! Shadow of the Colossus was better than Ico, so hopefully this continues in that direction. :)

Yeah, but saying "rat-griffin" at least displays that you're aware of some mythological basis. The pure stunned perplexity displayed by people who couldn't do anything but stammer animal names shocked me. GAF is usually sharper than that.

...Like those stupid flying lizard things in Lair. WTF's with those? Man, they were weeeeeird! ;)

Gryphon is geek chic, griffon is acceptable, but griffin is clearly for the unwashed masses!

Gryphon, griffon, griffin, they're all the same. I changed my posts to be consistent before I saved.

When I spell it "gryphon" I'm reminded of extreme dorks who pronounced them "gr-eye-fon", because that's how they learned it from their AD&D manuals. :)

I wonder if we'll meet his momma.
And how big she must be...

My guess:

Both the kid and the ratcatbird/catratfish/dogcatrat/baccarat/griffin/gryphon thing have been abandoned/orphaned/exiled. No idea why they're wandering around though.

We're having fun. A griffon is a lion/eagle and we think this is something different. Just because we don't have a greek name for the little guy doesn't mean we can't call him a rat/bird.

It is called the realistic imagination process. One through which someone who adores Superman and follows his adventures would never accept the segment where the hero stops a bullet with his eye because that would be...euhh..Unrealistic...

That creature is fucking adorable. I can't wait to adventure around with it. SO CUTE.

There could be more devs out there that just aren't given a chance. Ueda's said that he has complete control over his projects and that Sony doesn't put pressure on him to do this or that. That's a luxury that even some well known devs aren't given.

I don't think so, honestly. Ueda and his team seem uniquely talented in how they perceive gaming and what they can do in it. Think about it like this: Prior to ICO and Shadow of the Colossus, I doubt many - if any - people ever conceived of games like that. There's truly no missing link between what gaming was like at the time of their inception and those products; at least none that I can think of. They both seemed to come virtually out of nowhere, and that's not something you see very often in any medium, least of all in gaming where sequels and spiritual successors rule the day.

When I said Ueda is like Miyamoto, I meant in a sense that they are both able to take gaming and expand upon its current parameters and apparent confines - and go somewhere else with it. Miyamoto has done this numerous times in the past, while Ueda has shown signs of being able to take the cinema style of game design and truly integrate it with gameplay; something that hasn't been done before him, IMO.

I'm not saying that other designers couldn't achieve great things given more freedom; Blizzard proves they could. But like Blizzard, many would probably take what had already existed and simply evolve or perfect it. Ueda seems completely uninterested in simply improving or evolving something that already exists; he wants to express his ideas in the form of an interactive epiphany, a leap.

And that's why I think he's one of the most important people in gaming today, if not the most important.

Not a hard call to make. Setting up a relationship throughout the course of the game and then having it end in tragedy is a common theme. It doesn't have to end in death though.

Maybe they can preview the creature as a boss in God of War 3. I don't know if I could butcher it Kratos style but at least it would prepare us for its death.

I'm so happy I went out and bought SotC about 3 hours prior to this video leaking. It probably wouldn't be on the shelf today.

Good for you. Welcome to the land of genius called Team ICO.
