Pretty sure he's going off the Japan/FF meme.

I think the issue here is that this trailer looks incredible. It seems to mash the companionship of Ico with the large size creatures of SOTC. If you are a fan of these games, I don't understand what's not to like.

If you don't like the Ico games, then Im not sure why you are posting in this thread to begin with...

To be fair, the entirety of Shadow's gameplay is doing battle with giants, figuring out their weaknesses in an almost puzzle-like way, and then taking them down- the presence of a giant creature in this game doesn't exactly make it a spiritual successor. In fact, given the very small amount we know right now, it's a pretty superficial comparision. Now, for fans of ICO's gameplay? I agree wholeheartedly that this looks like a perfect extension of that.

The amusing thing is that there was one guy who said almost similar thing here except I don't think he was joking. It's always funny when someone claims their professionalism in a field of expertise in a thread like this.

Sony really are fools for letting their biggest gun of E3 get leaked.

There is nothing else Sony has that can top Ueda's next masterpiece.

Lol. Sounds like they lost the game or something.

Look.

I loved SotC as much as anyone.

But doesn't anyone else find it weird that on GAF, for certain games, it's somehow a mortal sin and an indicator of lack of intelligence to be skeptical of a game that hasn't even been released?!

Since when was having an opinion stupid?

First off, a quick tangent. This isn't a GAF-centric thing. That idea has always annoyed me. Honestly, how people act here is how people act in most gaming communities.

Second, what's the problem? Ueda and his team have a great history. Ico and SOTC were great games. Why not be excited about their next project? If anything, a negative reaction would be the unreasonable one. As you said, the game hasn't even been released, what are you judging it on? It seems that most common "reason" that all the negative comments have been based on is that the game defies those posters' expectations. They got their hopes up over something they knew nothing about, and now they're disappointed by something they know less-than-a-little about.

Team ICO just shot themselves in the foot.

I don't know how much the rest of you know about animation and cinematography (I'm an expert), but realism and framerate are huge parts of it. It's not like it is on the Wii where you can become successful by being shovelware. If you screw someone over on the PS3, you bring shame to yourself, and the only way to get rid of that shame is repentance.

What this means is the PS3 public, after hearing about this, is not going to want to purchase TRICO, nor will they purchase any of Team ICOs games. This is HUGE. You can laugh all you want, but Team ICO has alienated an entire market with this move.

Team ICO, publicly apologize for the test footage or you can kiss your business goodbye.

<sigh> I'm sorry GAF...

Was about to say the same thing.

I also don't think this was planned for release at E3, so I'm glad we've got to see it one way or another.

Who cares if it comes at a conference, or now, anyway? As I said yesterday, it's pretty much E3 season now regardless.

Isn't this EXTREMELY early test footage? I would think the game looks much better now.

I agree with you, but riding a creature (like the shots underwater) reminds me of SOTC a lot. You may not try and kill it, but it still has a similar foundation in the gameplay.

Who gives a shit? This is old footage anyway and it still looks great. Seriously, the only people who give a shit about E3 presentations or whatever are armchair gaming CEOs freaks and wanna be game developer "journalists" so they will have talking points to bicker over instead of enjoying games.

Fuck em. This shit is hot.

I suppose. It's just kind of immature.
How is it immature?

This is like if three minutes of a non-broadcast pilot leaked on TV and people slagged of the camera work. It's just utterly pointless because this is not made for public consumption. We shouldn't even be watching it.

If the game comes out and is shit, it'll be open to exactly the same criticism as everything else. Most people have the intelligence to realize this is not a gauge of the game and shouldn't be ripping into it.

This isn't a trailer so don't expect hours to go into cinematography. This is test footage, of course the animation isn't going to be top notch or even finished, in early development, don't go expecting 60fps either.

Guys, it's a joke.

Seriously. I can't believe this is getting hate on here.

I'm not even a Ueda fan (enjoyed Ico but never played SotC) and I don't see what's so terrible.

It's Ico-ish in every possible way. It looks poetic, it has style, it has emotions, it's based on the interactions between two characters...

Really, I don't get it. What the hell are all those people crying for Trico on GAF expecting ?

most of the "hate" is just people not blown away by what they have seen. and that's perfectly fine, it's not only old but old test footage at that. people aren't supposed to be blown away by test footage, that's why we rarely see it. now that's not to say that you can't be wowed by test footage. personally i think this looks outstanding. but i'm not going to condemn and call out people who weren't impressed by early footage. TRICO gets placed so high up on a pedestal that even a mention of not being impressed by old test footage brings out the wolves, ready to scream out "hater" and how "they just don't get it" as if there is something to get. some people aren't impressed by old test footage. big fucking deal. when the game comes out and it's better than Ico then we can smite the dummies. but as it stands it seems utterly ridiculous to pull the hater card just because everybody doesn't cream one for old test footage.

I think people were expecting SoTC 2, where this appears closer to ICO.

This comment isn't based so much on the footage but Ueda in general ... I'm hoping that whatever this production ends up being, that it isn't so ambitious as to be impossible to achieve at a healthy framerate and good controls. I've always personally felt Shadow was helped in some aspects, rather than simply hurt, by those two things - but I'd love to see what a clean experience with a Ueda game would be like with a subject of this scale.

KernelPanic said:

Looks like a healthy dash of both to me. And screw anyone that feels an ICO 2 would be a disappointment.

I'm hoping the game will have great gameplay and it probably will, but I should be free to dislike the design of the weird creature, for example, without 10 people somehow "calling me out." If I think it's ugly, I think it's ugly. That could severely impact my enjoyment of the game, unless they've changed the design.

Some people are making initial criticisms like that one, and it's somehow bad to do that. Why?

I couldn't agree more with the person who said that they'd happily play the game if nothing changed from this video. The idea of working with the griffin, being dependent on one another, as a game mechanic but at the same time crafting a relationship through these actions is potentially very exciting. People spoke of the attachment they gained to the companion cube in Portal, this could be much greater than that due to the interactions you have with the griffin.

And is potentially what was so well done in Ico. Which is why I really don't understand what else you would expect from Trico if you loved Ico.

And if you didn't like Ico, I don't know why you would expect anything at all D:

Now let someone try and say games aren't art. Ueda smack down.

Not this shit again...

Anyway, enough fucking around, I think I was just surprised to see the cat-weasel-badger-rat-bat.

I'm over it now and - after a re-viewing - am suitably impressed. As long as the final game lives up to the test footage the PS3 is now officially on my radar.

Good job lads, I will be watching.

This is what he said at GDC

Ueda said that his Japan Studio bosses are probably in the audience so he can't say much, but it might be something that's already been done to an extent. Maybe something of a cross between his first two games. The essence of the game is close to ICO perhaps, but can't say any more.

That I can understand though. I should precise that my "un-understanding" is strictly tied to the quotes selected by Doubledex in this post : http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=15927354&postcount=1657

Guys, I have been thinking about this game every day for my whole life, you just don't understand.

I love the potential that this game holds and can see why it could possibly take so long to develop. If the griffin is an AI companion, and I think that's a fair assumption, the work it takes to make it not only competent and engaging but also to make you feel something for it , which I assume is a goal, is great. I have all the faith in the world that Ueda and his team will pull this off. It's a very ambitious idea.

Yes we do - this is one universe I'd love to experience as close as possible. Team Ico is simply amazing at conveying emotions and sympathy in a video game. Pure, concentrated poetry in motion and sound.
