Enemies In Gaming That Make You Go "Nope!"

Oh he's not that scary

Is this an official animation or is it fanmade?

It's not scary or grotesque by design, but I was caught offguard by Ogre in level 6 Legend of Grimrock.

Worse thing was, the previous entrance was closed, and the immediate room is filled with spiders and the Ogre itself nearby.

Intimidating stuff.

"Hello there, I'm Reaper"
"I'm Super Salvador"
"And we're here to ruin you when you try to play Mercenaries in the Resident Evil games."

Plus the severed head ghost from Fatal Frame. It moves so much quicker, and more directly than pretty much any other ghost and it scared the poos out of me the first time I saw it. Mainly because her mouth still moves when she's been damaged by a shot when no other ghost does. It's like she's trying to say something to you, and she never breaks eye-contact.

It would still scare the poos out of me if it had more health, or the ability to vanish, and I've played Fatal Frame a lot.

This is a good one. I had absolutely no idea what was happening to my vision when I saw the first one. Despite him pulling my vision towards him, I lost track of my orientation and couldn't find him for awhile. However, the big scary beast in STALKER will always be the iconic Bloodsucker for me. Hearing one yell always made me frantically look around for any trace of those bright eyes.

Bloodsuckers in STALKER fucked my shit up jesus christ

Yeah, bloodsuckers are goddamn scary. I bought SoC without knowing anything about it (I just saw the name on a list of good FPSs) so I didn't know it was going to have crazy mutants like that. The first time I encountered one it was daylight and I was fighting some guys near a building. Suddenly I saw two white dots move in the distance and kill one guy. I was just sitting there thinking wtf was that when suddenly the dots started sprinting towards me. I shat my pants and died.

Then that part in the underground tunnels with two of them was even worse.

And then on top of that you encounter that controller before reaching the surface. I had no idea what the heck was going on when it started using its mind control powers and it scared the shit out of me.

Damn that game was great.

Yep, Lisa from P.T. still gives me chills even after IÂ’ve played it at least a dozen times. The working JoeÂ’s from Alien Isolation to, never knew when they would go into ass-kicking mode, always kept an eye on them whether saw them or not.

Absolutely. STALKER is memorable as fuck. What a game that was, dear god.

Those zombies in the first level that run after you in this game

I was like six, I remember sneaking the game out to play it for whatever reason and after I turned around to see some fucker chasing me I turned it off. Didn't play it again.

Dreughs from Morrowind. The horribly muddy water was scary enough, like a Silent Hill with vertical movement, but then it's populated by these scourges. They were terribly fast and would be upon you as soon as the combat music started. Deterred me from ever entering the water again.

Hydrus from Shadow of the Colossus. Usually there's a bit of apprehension when approaching a new Colossus but I sat on that shore for a loooooooooooooong time. I could just picture it dragging me down.

Both are from games that aren't scary so that made my fear of them feel like thematic whiplash.

Oh really? Maybe I'm alone in this then? I don't like magic builds, and while I agree that it's definitely a dangerous enemy, I didn't have much trouble with them with a strength based melee build. I just found them to look a lot more threatening than they really were.

You're right though, everyone just runs through the Tomb of the Giants.

How do you tackle them in close combat?

I preferably played as a shild parry/counter kinda guy, I did want to get hit to see what the attack was about, how powerful is it and see how careful I need to be. These guys though, their spinning head attack traps you in a lock-state and can drain all your stamina and health in seconds. So not getting hit at all was the only option I thought, there are a few enemies in Dark Souls that can hit you very hard or even one-shot you but only the wheel-skelletons can do the same as theses huge 4 legged skelletons and therefore are the scariest enemies in the game, at least for me.

Spidermon and beholder in Doom were probably my first nope moment, oh yeah and Freddy in that crappy Nes game when i was younger.

Recently? Havent finished Bloodborne yet, but for the souls series, the medusa lhead monsters in tower of lateia rimging bells.... Man...everytime i see one...

Spider Splicers were pretty awful in Bioshock. You might hear them clanging around a little from a distance and then all of a sudden they drop down from the ceiling RIGHT BEHIND YOU!

From Mickey Mania

Sure she looks goofy, but the spider eventually rushes you and 1 hit kills you. Never liked this part.

I'm surprised this wasn't mentioned yet.

The Waterwraith from Pikmin 2.

This thing drops out of nowhere and literally tries to steamroll your Pikmin. You cannot attack it without Purple Pikmin. All you can do is run.

Both Lisas.

The one from P.T. and the one from REmake.

Lisa from P.T.
Literally shut my PS4 off during that scene. I stood there totally creeped the fuck out when I saw her standing there twitching like that...and then she FUCKING RUSHES AT ME OUT OF NOWHERE.

Turned the PS4 off immediately after that. Lol I had enough at that point.

The first time i saw these things, i run back to the Lamp. Closed Bloodborne and played another game for like a week.

Ugh...the worst...Fuck all the enemies in the woods in that game. It took me forever to make my way through it. I felt so uneasy with all those snake enemies

The Xenomorph in Alien Isolation,
specifically once I reach the med-lab section, I just chicken-out every time:

The crazy hair dudes are trivial to parry.

That's the best part, though. The proper way to deal with them is to stand your ground, take a deep breath, and put a bullet right between their eyes as they zoom in and wind up for an attack that could (on Defiled dungeons) potentially one-shot you. The thing that's the absolute antithesis of everything your instincts are telling you to do when one of those things comes screeching at you like a bat out of hell.
