Epic Mickey - Opening Cinematic

Wait, so Squeenix Mickey's ears fail you:

But, Warren Spector's Octagono ears are good to you?

I personally like Squeenix's version better because he seems so much more retro. The mad/serious look of Spector's is a better fit for the game though.

That KH2 Mickey pic is not ingame.

The "Ear thing" that the previous poster was referring to was a technique used in Epic Mickey that spins Mickey's ears around his head so that you always see them in their primary position at all times, KH doesn't do that.

"hurrdurr! that square mickey isn't IN GAME!!"

It's the overall design of him that's superior, not the actual render itself.

1. CGI render versus in game WORK IN PROGRESS model. Yeah right, thats very fair...
Another complete opossite thing is that you like more the design because its more retro or you dont like how the new one looks, but while Spector's Mickey is a new design Squarenix's one is a copy paste of an existing design, they dont deserve any merit for that.
Also the final model looks much better than that mickey you are posting.

2.The ears is one of the most important things in Mickey's design, and the KH one is WRONG. Walt Disney would be ashamed because one of the most important things he mandated to animators are that the ears always had to face the spectator. What squereenix did is a shitty thing that could have overcomed with an easy design decission.

3. Spector's Mickey is much better animated than the kingdom hearts one, he is the real mickey, kigndom hearts one is like those chinese copy pastes, it has no soul.

I'm kind of the same way. I'm still buying though. I mean, Psychonauts had mediocre gameplay, but totally made up for it for me with writing and visual design. I'll really enjoy Epic Mickey even with mediocre platforming if the visual design stays strong and Specter makes good on how freeform and choice-based he's trying to make it.

Yeah, from the gameplay videos, the game seems like it's aiming for a Rare-type of quality, but the lack of polish keeps it from getting there.

oh god lets stop comparing kingdom hearts to epic mickey

the games arent even comparable. one is an Action RPG the other one is a platformer

We are comparing the art, nobody is comparing the games.

Also is a platformer with RPG elements :D

I was making reference towards the Mickey in the Epic Mickey trailer vs. Square Enix one. Based completely on style alone (the shapes, the location of features, etc.)

Also, I have no idea what you're talking about, Mickey animated wonderfully in Kingdom Hearts 2

Then again I have a feeling this is going to turn into another GAF "Japan sucks! GLORIOUS WESTERN DEVELOPER!" thread. So I'm going to bail now.

im not a disney fan but i am looking forward to this. hopefully the final game comes through because the concept is excellent.

btw what is the white around classic mickeys eyes? is that supposed to be part of his eyes or white fur? its odd seeing his pupils blink.

EDIT: OMFG yensid looks so fucking cool in this!

Of course, he is Walt Disney :lol
(if only he had Disney's voice, of course its imposible, but I would have love to hear his voice here, like in the themepark presentations)
His design is really great.

nah i was thinking more of the KH one and this one... the whole oldness look of this one really adds to it.

... I don't think that conversation was going to head that way at all. Seems like a cheap way to degenerate the people who disagree with you.

Oh, no I was only joking. :lol
I knew you were talking about the old wrinkles and warts in his hand and all that. Its really good.

Eh, looks okay.

Square-Enix did a much better job.
So much better. The only issue I've had with the game so far was the design of Mickey himself. He seems like a bit of an odd job for a 3D perspective, but I guess square pulled it off some how. I remember him looking pretty damn nice in Kingdom Hearts...but I guess he was altered a bit too...

I actually expected it to go the other way, of Japan developers getting the praise, but whatever.

Since Disney is more involved, it has a 'higher pedigree', but the sound effects for Epic Mickey seem very generic.

The "ears mandate" looks fine in animation but on a CG model it looks pretty bad. Like his ears start rotating around his head and then in the next shot, which is head-on, they're right back in a conventional position.

Pretty distracting.

I thought it looked sick when they rotated.

No different in 2D animation. How is it distracting?

Personally, I think they could have pushed the mumble speak a bit more so it'd be like Rayman2/Hatsworth/the Banjo games instead of just a short sound byte to go with the text. The way it is right now is half charming/half assed.

look awesome

animation looks so nice, who is in charge for the character animation? animator from Disney? or people from the production team?

If the intro is CG, why isn't it anti aliased to hell and back again? There are jaggies visible as day and it doesn't look like something the Wii would have trouble to render in real time.

Except maybe for the awesoem shadows and the depth of field.. >_>

It's probably designed that way to make people believe it's in real time.

Real-time >>>>>>>> Pre-rendered, because it's honest.

it will be neat if they included a mode that included all the details of each disney characters appeared in the game, like Smash Brothers did with the characters trophies

On a scale of Metroid: Other M to Super Mario Galaxy, this is definitely New Super Mario Bros Wii.

The Disneyland model got me super geeked. Besides The Haunted Mansion, are they going to using any other attractions as levels?

From the concept art and levels we have seen:

-Its a Small World, is the first level of the game, and the first screens shown.
-Haunted Mansion concept art and some screens.
-Inside sleeping beauty castle, Oswald lives there
-Matternhorn concept art with "skyway to ..."
-Main Street USA concept art
-Space Mountain concept art
-Jungle Cruise and Robinson's Swiss Treehouse concept art
-Skull Rock and Restaurant ship video of the level
-Facade and Plaza of pirates of Caribbean video of level

Im sure theres more we dont know yet

And a bigger version:

i cant wait to go to the middle to check the status of Walt Disney and Mickey!
This post made me check out the larger image again so i could see the Oswald/Disney statue and I just noticed Oswald's head on the gate/arch/thing near them. Awesome!

The ears...it looks too weird.

But I must say, I'm jealous of how well Mickey always seems to sleep. Very peacefully, and his bed looks comfy.
